About Mrs. Cheeseburger

Soooo setting up your wedding registries is supposed to be fun, right?! Right.

Bridal Breakdown: Registry Woes Part 1 - Macy's : wedding registry Wedding0117

(source)

We were six months out from our wedding date (the supposed golden time for registering), and I was about to leave Baltimore for my rural medicine rotation for an entire month. I started worrying that our registry “experience” was never going to happen, and that I would end up doing the whole thing online - ha, little did I know.

It started off like any other Sunday. When I realized that the Eagles had a bye week, I somehow managed to convince Burger that he had nothing better to do than go pick out our wedding wish list for a few hours. :)

We started out at Macy’s. Because really, who doesn’t register at Macy’s? (<- notice the preconceived notions about registering? right.) When we arrived, an older woman greeted us and sat us down in the fine china department to set up our registry. It was pretty exciting at this point! After entering all of our information, convincing us to open a Macy’s charge (I know, I know), and giving us a tote bag filled with goodies, we had our scanner and we were on our way. A few other couples showed up right as we were leaving, so we were pretty much on our own, scanning away.

Side Bar: in my family, not only do we own china, but we use it multiple times a year. I know that this isn’t really the norm, but Cheeseburger Mom didn’t complete her china place settings until 5 or 10 years ago, and she always regretted the time she spent without it. So anyway, china - though “unnecessary” - was something that was on our list to register for.

I had done some research regarding china. My family owns Lenox, and while it is beautiful, at over $100 per place setting, I wasn’t comfortable adding it to the list. Most other brands (Kate Spade, Noritake, Vera Wang, etc.) are also this expensive. I found Mikasa place settings to be much more “reasonable” (about $50 per place setting), and noticed that they even sold completer sets (8 place setting mega sets) for about $200 dollars. We loved the Mikasa patterns, decided on one together, and added everything to our list. Victory!

I initially decided against crystal, even though Burger was pushing for it, and I knew we weren’t registering for silver. We added some pretty vases and picture frames and were on our way to bedding. Enter stumbling block number one. Let me preface this by saying that we. love. our. bed. The few hours that we might get to spend in it each night are heavenly. We have always splurged on sheets, and have a soft spot in our heart for really awesome comforters. But, um, bedding is EXPENSIVE. Like, really expensive.

We had decided to get a down comforter and duvet awhile ago (for ease of washing without damaging the integrity of the comforter), but again - EXPENSIVE! We were at Macy’s during some kind of sale, so prices then were less frightening than full price, but when we finally decided on a comforter (there are 6-8 “levels” of down comforters… who knew?) it was very hard to pull the trigger. Sheets were no better. Extra pillow cases (we have 6 pillows and use them all) were the worst. Ugh. I felt this knot in my stomach. What are people going to think of us when they see that our bedding costs multiple hundreds of dollars?! Sigh.

Mr. Burger convinced me that it wasn’t a big deal. We moved on to cookware and added some of the basics - plus Burger got some cool things for himself, like a rice cooker . :) When it came time to pick some pots and pans, I found myself stumbling yet again over brands I’ve never heard of. All-Clad (complete with subsequent near-syncopal episode from looking at price tag). Calphalon. Cuisinart. Our heads were swimming. Stainless steel? Non stick? We had no guidance. All I knew was that I needed a big pot to cook my sauce in (because anyone that knows me knows I can’t cook spaghetti sauce in small portions). :) We eventually picked a Simply Calphalon Stainless Steel 10 piece set (for a ridiculous amount of money, without a big pot), and moved on (physically, not emotionally).

At that point I felt truly ill, Burger Man was starving, and I needed a break from this experience. We turned in our scanner, got a print out of our registry stats (that actually had some pretty interesting information on it), and headed to the food court.

To be continued…

Did you experience sticker shock on your initial registry trip?

I agree, we altered a lot of our registry to ensure prices weren’t insane for our families. We LOVED Lenox but settled on Mikasa with a mega-set. We figured we really liked the pattern and our families would be more likely to purchase it because of price.

macy’s has huge sales all the time. We registered for a $500 down comforter and my brother bought it for us for $125. We also registered for Lenox that was normally $160/setting but it freqently goes on sale for around $100/setting and sometimes even as low as $88/setting.
So macy’s stuff should never be bought unless it is on sale. We had a lot of problems with macy’s though, and if I had to do it all over again I would have never registered with them.

We opted to go with Bed Bath and Beyond, Kohl’s and Target for our registry go-tos. And my mom has already started buying up significant chunks (she had coupons, things were on sale - it all created a perfect storm of registry destruction). Our wedding website also indicates that Home Depot gift cards would also be appreciated (I want to do some small renovation projects).

registering is hard, hard work. i did a ton of research online before we went in person, and even then the whole hunger-grumpiness thing came up. and it took months for us to hone our registry (mostly because i would get sick of it and need to take a step away).

Fortunately, I’ve been on my own for so long that I already have a great set of Calphalon, many Wusthoff, a Cuisinart and a KitchenAid. So, I didn’t feel so bad registering for Lenox. Of course, I ended up buying the dishes for myself b/c I stumbled across a sale for $67/placesetting including shipping (the “sale” price at Macy’s is $99).

I’m so glad we chose not to register. We’ve been on our own for a very long time and living together for over a year. We actually got rid of a lot of housewares when we moved in together. We don’t need china, silver, crystal, bedding, or the other eclectic crap that gets pud on registries. I’ve bought my fair share of fish knives and sugar bowls.

Either people can give us money or contribute to our honeymoon registry. But no Macy’s or Target.

I feel like a jerk registering for the big ticket items we need. I think we registered for the same Calphalon set and it is insanely expensive, and I sheepishly told my mom I hope the relatives realize they can pitch in for it.

So for the most part, I’m trying to keep items under 100. 50 is really the sweet spot I’m aiming for, but things like dishes and flatware totally screw it up. And I’ve done all of this online - being in the store is way too overwhelming for me.

My mom works at Macy’s and she was very against us registering there…or anywhere else traditional. Buying household stuff full price is often a ripoff, and your guests might not have the time and energy to shop for your gift when it’s on sale. Another challenge for us was choosing gifts that were neither too cheap nor crazy-expensive.

To make a long story short, we are avoiding registry hassles by doing a honeymoon registry - but I think it’s impressive that you guys got so much done in one trip!

I felt bad about registering for anything big. The good thing is that Macys has huge sales all the time. BBB has the 20% coupon. I just bought bedding that was originally 530 dollars for 165 due to Macy’s holiday sales. I told everyone that buy my stuff on sale because if you wait a few weeks, almost everything on my registry is on sale

the lovely people at BB&B were so helpful, but everyone kept telling me to register for 2-3 items per person. we’re inviting 250 people! we can’t even fit 750 items in our apt. we are upgrading our stuff so i don’t feel bad about the prices. if it’s too much, they can pitch in or buy something else! or give me a gift card. i would like that…

but i feel you on the excitement to disenchantment. registering is hard!

My “registering” has gotten out of hand. Registering = bad for shopaholics. So, the initial plan was JUST a honeymoon registry. We really want a nice honeymoon, and we really can’t afford one, and we will eat just fine on the pots and pans we already have. But then my sister told me I should register for some things, since some people don’t like just donating towards a honeymoon - they want to give you a physical item. So then I opened an account at myregistry.com, which lets you put this little button on your web browser and anything you see on any site anywhere on the web you can “add to myregistry.” Enter: Madness. Juice glasses from anthropologie? Add to my registry. Organic sheets from silkcomfort? Add to my registry. 8 matching wine glasses? Add to my registry. Saturday night I was seriously on the verge of adding china to our registry when my fiance stopped me, reminded me that we wanted to go on a honeymoon… remember??? It’s just too easy!

We’re planning on going to that Macy’s Sip and Scan event next month to start registering. And then my mom is insisting that we pick a place at a “lower price point” to balance it out. We’re going with either Bed Bath and Beyond or Target. I’m leaning towards Target because I feel BB&B and Macy’s will kinda overlap.

I went with my best friend when she registered. The advice given to her was not to worry about the prices, she could edit later. I’m not the kind of girl who can not look at prices, so as she happily scanned away I was adding up her costs in my head. She registered for a $3500 table after all the place settings, china, etc. It’s crazy what they convince you you need!

No, we just went to BBB and Target, Macy’s is too rich for our blood :)

My guy wanted the rice cooker too. I put up a fight for a while since we have an incredibly small kitchen, eventually I figured he didn’t ask for much so he got the rice cooker.

We registered for some big-ticket items and plan on registering for an equal number of inexpensive items. We did feel kinda..greedy, I suppose..but we figure no one has to buy us anything if they don’t want to!

I liked registering at Macy’s, but their delivery of all of the crystal items I registered for was SLOW! In fact, some of the Kate Spade pieces were cancelled because they ran out of inventory. Great! Now, essentially, people who thought they bought us a gift now just have a credit on their credit card. Seriously, all of their crystal brands and accessories are having serious delay times–so keep that into consideration!

I felt the same way. Even though we did ours online, I felt awful putting bedding sets on there cause they’re frickin expensive for king size sets especially! I tried to add enough small things to it so people didn’t feel like they had to break the bank.

I thought regitering would be fun, but it was relatively stressful. We definitely had some sticker shock–we decided not to register for a few things because we just figured people wouldn’t spend that much.

I’ve been doing a online registry which allows me to add items from any store - online or retail. But I wanted to do one in store registry at a bigger national chain. Like macys. After all your comments about your registry experiences at macys I’m not so sure any more!
GOOD cookware is extremely expensive. But if you are avid cooks like we are it’s worth it. We plan on registering for a hard anodized set.
We’re puttng a assortment of price items on there so that people can spend however little they want.
