I like reading wedding blogs, Photoshopping wedding design mock ups, making lists, and planning, planning, planning! I’m a bit of an anomaly, on one side I’m a very girlie girl, I collect shoes, I lay out my outfits 4-6 weeks in advance, and I’d never leave the house without my hair curled and makeup on. But on the other side, I’m a total tomboy, I love to go camping and hiking, play drinking games (hey, I’m Irish!) and most of my closest friends are guys. My fiancé and I are planning a DIY-focused wedding with a balance between easygoing (what he wants) and chic and stylish (what I want), and are tying it all together with elements in lavender, sage, butter cream and chocolate.
About Mrs. Cola

Since we couldn’t go back to Mexico for our honeymoon right after the wedding because it’s the wrong time of year, we used a very scientific method for determining our destination. Ha! In reality, all we did was say to ourselves, “Where can we go that will be sunny, warm, not too expensive, and not too long of a flight?”

For the past 10 years or so, I’d always dreamed of going to Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas for a honeymoon, but it didn’t meet the criteria of not being too expensive or too long of a flight from California. Le sigh!

Next, we started thinking about Fiji or Tahiti… but the dreamy above-water accommodations were WAY pricey, and a 7-8 hour flight was a bit on the long side, considering we’ll be leaving the Monday after the wedding and will be exhausted.

So, the only other alternative we could think of that met the criteria was Hawaii, with a 5 hour flight from San Francisco. Now, I’ve always wanted to go to Hawaii, but at first I just wasn’t that excited about it for our honeymoon. I had just always pictured some place more exotic/special/unique/romantic for some reason. But then, Trip Advisor came to my rescue! After Weddingbee, it’s probably my favorite website, the forums there are great, and I was able to describe what we were looking for, and tons of people responded with great suggestions.

So now we have a honeymoon destination: the island of Kauai. It is the least developed and crowded of all the islands, so hopefully we’ll be able to capture a bit of the feeling from when we visited Majahuitas Resort on the private cove in Mexico. And to further that goal of seclusion, we decided to rent a private house on the beach!

Enter the Kauai Love Shack! After about a month of research, it was the only 1 bedroom house directly on beach of the north shore I could find, so we booked it (we didn’t want to pay thousands more for a bigger house; why waste money when we only need one bedroom?).

And without further ado, here is what we’ll get to enjoy for one whole week after our wedding!

Now for the price tag, which was at least $2k less than all the other houses we looked at:

  • $45.00 - Reservation Fee
  • $1000.00 - Security Deposit
  • $3141.95 - Total Rent including 11.4166% Tax
  • $200.00 - Cleaning Fee

$4386.95 - Total

We’ve already put down half of that, and the rest is due in March. We can’t wait! The only downside is since we won’t be at a hotel, we will have to do some cooking ourselves. But I’m thinking we’ll stock up on sandwich and salad fixings to make our own lunches, and just drive the 4 miles into the town of Hanalei for dinners. Or, we can also take a romantic walk down the beach about 300 yards to a small resort that has an on-site restaurant.

How did you pick your honeymoon location? And will you be going right after your wedding?

You are going to LOVE the north shore of Kauai. It is perfect for a honeymoon. I wish we had the time to go. I recomend going to the princeville resort for at least one meal splurge. The view from the outdoor terrace is unbelievably beautiful!

Looks beautiful! I’ve been to Atlantis, and I have to tell you, it’s fun, but waaaaay overpriced (you can’t eat a single meal for less than $50 a person!). It’s pretty unsafe to go outside the resort, and the waterpark is cool, but gets old after a couple of days. I think you’ll like Kauai better. Have a lovely time! :)

One more thing, the friday night seafood buffet and sunday brunch buffet are excellent at the princeville resort.

Ahhhh…I love it! We were in Kauai in Oct 2008 when we got engaged. We stayed outside of Kapa’a. Oh…you are going to LOVE Kauai!! It’s amazing.
There is this cheesy line they use for tourists “The Aloha Sprirt” but I swear it’s true! People there are so nice and layed back. When you are there…you really do get filled with the “aloha spirit” haha It’s like a little slice of heaven there. Everything is so pretty and nice….everyone you meet is amazing. Oh…have a great time!!
Also…for a super romantic dinner….book a sunset dinner at The Beach House. We went there for my bday. It’s so pretty. The windows open up onto this lawn…that is right on the water. You can sit at your table and watch the sunset. Amazing!!

Make sure to go to the Hanelai Bay Pier at sunset one evening. It was the prettiest place we saw in Hawaii. There were some locals there with guitars which was also cute.

Hanelai is also home to Puff the Magic Dragon!

That looks fabulous!

And no worries about Atlantis. All I’ve heard about it is it’s SUPER expensive and gets boring after just a few days.

Yay for Hawaii (my whole family lives there) and Kauai is my hands-down favorite island! It’s seriously gorgeous. AND I don’t think you’re missing out on much with Atlantis…after 2 different jobs and many months in the Bahamas I’ve spent plenty of time there and um, not so impressed. So back to hooray for Kauai! And that cottage is amazing! :)

Oh. My. Gosh! That is GORGEOUS! I love Hawaii, so beautiful, but you’re going to have an even better time living in that little house for a whole week! How fun!

Ooooh, love love love shack!

We’re having a 2-part honeymoon. For the week (or two) after, we’re going to my parents’ beach house, and then the next winter we’re going to Germany to visit his fam. :)

I liked the Atlantis, but decided against it as a honeymoon destination because it is actually a really good trip to take with kids since they love the water slides. So we decided against going there for my minimoon. I think Hawaii is a much better choice, particularly from the west coast.

I went to Kauai last summer on a girls get-away. It is a fabulous choice for your honeymoon! My FI and I are considering going for our’s. I actually saw the house you’re renting when I was doing my research for the honeymoon. It was my top choice. The views look amazing!
