Mrs. Pretzel, Seattle Age and Occupation: 32 Learning, Training, and Development Specialist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28 Manufacturing Engineer Engagement Date: September 2, 2009 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: Catholic Church & The Engine Room at Georgetown Studios About Me: I’m just a thirty-something girl who never dreamed of weddings, poofy dresses, or ritzy receptions. I am a rabid knitter, except recently, wedding projects have replaced my yarn and needles. I’ve been fiercely independent since the age of 2 and 30 years later I think my family and friends had given up on me settling down and getting married. Ironically, I had to go all the way to Seattle to find a boy from Purdue. We fell in love over Seattle Beers and cooking together. I love NASCAR, he loves Legos. I can talk like a Muppet and he can fit a whole McDonald’s cheeseburger in his mouth. We are a two reception couple, currently planning a brewery inspired bash.
About Mrs. Pretzel

Post-Squat, Industrial-Bohemian-Chic

December 22nd, 2009 @ 2:45 pm by Mrs. Pretzel

Since picking our beer themed venue—Mr Pretzel and I have developed a crush on the neighborhood it’s in. Serious crush. We go out of our way to visit, shop and hang down there a couple times a month. If we are even remotely in the neighborhood we find a reason to swing by… and maybe peek in the windows of our venue—not that I’m a “venue peeking Tom” or anything… no that’s not it at all.

We’ve enjoyed learning more about the history, charm, and novelties that the neighborhood offers. We fall more and more in love with the location each visit. I’m hoping that our guests can see the charm too—there’s just a little bit of worry that they will be thrown off by the “non-weddingy” surroundings and will think they made a wrong turn or are in the wrong neighborhood. Ummm, yeah, that would kinda suck.

What makes it “non-weddingy”? The Georgetown neighborhood in Seattle is semi industrial. It’s flanked on one side by the interstate, by Boeing Field (where Boeing does flight test on new airplanes) on another, by a railroad on another… The venue itself has some cool history as the Pre-Prohibition era home of Seattle Malt and Brewing Company.

The Brewery was built in 1903 and operated until 1915 when Washington adopted Prohibition. At one time it was the 6th largest brewery in the world. What, you ask, did they brew there?

Haven’t heard of it? No? Rainier Beer is a Northwest regional beer akin to Miller Lite, not really something one would associate with the yummy, hoppy, goodness that the Pretzels are so fond of. But it’s a local icon—and thus kinda cool. (Note- in 1999 Rainier Beer ceased being produced in the Northwest—it is now made in California. BOOOO!) I digress—back to the neighborhood.

Since the 1990s the neighborhood has developed a certain aesthetic.

Creatively employing the open, airy brick-walled spaces left behind by industry and manufacturing, and augmenting them with local art and 20th-century detritus, Georgetown’s merchants consistently fashion warm, imaginative interiors: places you want to visit and never want to leave. Just walking through the streets you witness post-squat, industrial bohemian chic. – Laura Cassidy of the Seattle Weekly [Source]

While post-squat, industrial Bohemian chic sounds right up my alley—Jiminy Cricket in the back of my head reminds me that some of our guests will find this strange. I alternate between being worried that our guests won’t see the same charm that we do and not caring if they do or not. “But Pretzel,” you ask, “what does post-squat industrial Bohemian chic look and feel like?”

Check out these images from the neighborhood.

First there are the crazy custom bikes. They pepper the ‘hood and always make me smile. The photo above was taken just down the street from our venue—notice the Malt House sign in the brick work. **swoon!**

There is Oxbow Park which houses two historic buildings (hat and boots) which once were part of a gas station—very Route 66-ish.

Georgetown is peppered with unique shops, bars, and restaurants. I read somewhere that a large percentage of the businesses are women owned—sweet. It is very community oriented, with an active community group and frequent neighborhood cultural events like the monthly Georgetown Art Attack and the annual Georgetown Festival.

In the middle of it all is our venue. Our pre-prohibition, brick clad, former beer producing kick a$$ venue. *sigh* Mr Pretzel and I are in love with our venue, the neighborhood, the vibe—all of it. I hope our guests “get it” too. How excited does all of this make me? See for yourself.

I just hope our guests embrace the “post-squat, industrial Bohemian chic”. *sigh*

Are you worried what your guests will think of your venue? Did you look at non-weddingy reception sites?

@CHK: Nice! The brewery moved up the street to what is now known as the Tulley’s building. If we have to serve a “miller lite like” beer for some of our non-adventuresome guests- maybe we should serve Rainier :-)

The venue looks awesome! I’m a little worried about what people will think of our venue as you have to go through some very not-nice neighborhoods to get there. But it has such a cool backstory! Its in a botanical gardens now, but used to be a huge library/museum in a complex built for retired sailors.
Sadly the parents and FI shot down the option of having our cocktail hour in the maritime museum still on-site. Sigh.

If your guests are from Seattle, they’ll look past the gritty exterior and know that Georgetown is an up and coming neighborhood, the anti-Ballard. We had our engagement pictures taken in Georgetwon and we love the area too. Perfect choice!

@wagamama: :) Your right, we’re not so worried about the Seattle guests- mostly our Midwest families. You’re so spot on- it is the Anti-Ballard. I can’t wait to take portraits down there!

Miss Pretzel, I heart your venue!! How cool is that? Ours was at an art gallery in a “not so good, but going through it’s transition stage” neighborhood where I grew up. I was worried what the guests would think as well about our choice, but everyone loved it! I am so happy that we went with a non-traditional location. The gallery owner was so nice and super helpful!! An extra bonus was the art itself-”Alteras Del Mundo”, based on the “Day of the Dead” celebration was on display, with some artists there working on their individual artwork.
We served champagne and cupcakes (made my wonderful hubby) and had a great time hanging out on the patio.

Don’t worry about the out of town guests, they love you and are just happy to be there to witness your marriage.

Good luck!! Can’t wait to see the pics when you become a Mrs.!!

awww, when the mister lived in Tacoma, we drank many a Rainier beer. It’s also not to my taste now, but I have a soft spot for the stuff.

your venue looks like such a great place for a wedding! i have some ultra-traditional family members who definitely “reacted” to some of my cousins’ non-traditional venue choices, but then turned out to love the weddings. I bet you’ll be fine.

I’m worried, but because a lot of my guests are from the Maine woods. Like the WOODS. I don’t want to alienate our (awesome!) hick guests with too fancy food and decorations.

This venue is at the top of my list for my wedding also! I stumbled across The Engine Room randomly and it was love at first site. Then I came across your 1st post on it when I was trying to find more pictures. This same thought has crossed my mind as well about out of town guests, both our families are from the south and you do have to drive through a bit of not so pretty industrial before you hit Gtown but I just think the building is so cool and I love that area. I’m not so sure what anti Ballard means, that’s where I live and I love it there as well :) Can’t wait to see what you end up doing with the place!

@DB: Oh Yay! One of the perks of the space is the discounted photo booth option- be sure to ask about that! Georgetown is where Ballard was years ago- Ballard has mostly gone through it’s transition period while GTown is just starting. For some (like me) I prefer the beginning of the transition when it’s all still rough around the edges (and secretly pray that it never becomes too smooth edged). PM me if you have any questions about our experience thus far with the Engine Room- would love to see the ideas you guys have planned too.

@Miss Pretzel:

Ah, I know what you mean…I’ve been in Ballard 6 years (but living in the general Seattle area all my life) and it has definitely been hard to watch landmarks torn down and condos put up, or more recently, things torn down or shut down and then sitting empty with the market the way it is.
Great tip on the photo booth, we visited the Archie McPhee photo booth on our 3rd date and have gone every year for our dating anniversary, it’s a tradition!
I might take you up on the PM’ing, we’re still in the early stages and haven’t even set an official date yet.

I think it’s awesome that you picked a venue in a neighborhood you love so much - and since all your guests love you guys, they’ll understand/figure out the neighborhood! If you’re doing OOT bags, maybe put some info on the awesome history of the neighborhood in there so folks can see why you love it so much!

I love the look of the neighborhood! I’m sure your guests will get that the neighborhood is totally “you” and appreciate it too! You could even share some of the history info on your programs or something, for your guests to read while they wait for the ceremony to start.
