About Mrs. Lamb

Bee-A-Ewe-tiful, Take Three

December 23rd, 2009 @ 2:31 pm by Mrs. Lamb

Yes, I was one of those mean girls who would mock other multiple trial brides in my head. They must be too picky or they must be bridezillas. Now that I have a walked a mile in the shoes of a multiple trial bride, I apologize! This has been an absurd experience at best and a frustrating one at worse. If you missed my first two trials, catch up here and here, and then join me back here for the continuation.

I went into a salon to try a new stylist. I decided to only show pictures of old Hollywood actresses for hair inspiration. The siren who keeps calling me is Lauren Bacall, so I repeatedly told the stylist that I loved her.

We talked about old movies. We talked about being old souls. We talked so much, that I really thought she got me. She worked my hair in pin curls and I thought this was such a positive sign. Then I showed her my makeup inspiration:

Ruby lips! Flawless skin! Nice brows! Brown eye makeup! As I watched the makeup come together, I thought things were going fairly well. We tried a few shades of red lipstick on my hand and I chose a more brown than pink shade. However, when the pin curls came out and the stylist swept bangs over my forehead, I knew that we just missed the mark. I explained that I didn’t like that and all of the pictures I brought showed hair swept up and away from the face. I pinched my hair showed her how I did it for my engagement pictures and how I want volume on top. I really tried. I went outside of my comfort zone. Then I went home and I held back tears as I took these pictures:

It’s all very pretty. I’ve tried to see how they relate to my inspiration pictures. To me, I look a little on the goth side because of the lining on the bottom of the eye. I also look completely washed out with the flash (which is how most of my photographs will need to be taken). I have a head full of hair that holds curl and will go as high as you want it to go, but for whatever reason, I have the distinct inability to properly communicate that I want exactly what the picture shows. I sent the pictures around to Ewe Mother, Ms. P, and the Lambaids. I received similar feedback from them. So, the search continues and the timeline gets shorter!

If you were me, would you settle for one of my previous looks or keep searching?

I like the hair from this one and the makeup from the last one best. As you said, the under-eye liner just doesn’t work! Nothing wrong with more trials, it will be worth it to find the right look.

Keep looking! I went through multiple trials for the same reason. And just when I was ready to give up, I tried someone I found through wedding blogs and sites that primarily does wedding hair & make-up. She was much more familiar with the look I was going for than the salons I visited.

Don’t settle. What you’re asking for isn’t that hard and you will eventually find someone who gets it.

The make-up you’re sporting here is not right at all! You have such a beautiful face and she made you look tired with all that makeup under your eyes. You will find someone who gets it and does it right!

See if you can find a bride on a local planner/photographers website who’s hair you like…then find out who did it! It worked for me. I had 4 hair trials (and 10 pounds of booby pins later) I found the PERFECT hair and makeup stylist for me. I knew the instance she started on my hair it would work. It was seriously love at first sight. I look back at my wedding pictures and I sigh, I LOVED how I looked and felt on my wedding day. You need to find that.

i really like your hair here and your makeup from the first trial. keep trying until you find someone who can do both beautifully. it’s your wedding day for gosh sakes — you’re entitled to look exactly how you want to look.

wow… so off the mark it’s crazy. You should just head up to the mall and spend some time at the makeup counters, trying out shades. Get the right lip and eye colors and bring them with you next time. Have you ever thought about doing your makeup yourself? Or even your hair? Since you know what you want you could do it exactly that way, and have time to practice it to make sure its perfect for the day. Plus then youd have the skills for retouches when/if necessary:-)

Don’t give up! You’ve figured out so many details don’t let one slip by. You’ll be able to find someone that actually gets it.

keep looking for someone you are so close! plus you remind me a lot of zoey deschanel in these photos of you!

i would like to see you have a hairstylist set your hair in rollers first before they go to curling your hair either with finger waves, pin curls, or using a curling iron. your hair needs that base of setting it in hot rollers! so not even an option to go without doing this!

you may need to ask for some back combing in your bangs along wiht the rest of your hair uptop to build a nice volume base. then get the hair dresser to work with their hands to loosen the girls and arrange them around your face. they may need to go back and fine tune your bangs to be the way you want.

you are so close, and so stunning!

I’m not sure if you’ve done this or not, but maybe you could take in the pictures of what you have had done already and say you explicitly DON’T want something like that.

My wedding is in June and I have my first hair/makeup trial in January! I am anticipating a long search for ‘the one’. It’s a big deal! You are the bride and these pictures will follow you around the rest of your life.

Good luck, stick it out until you’re 100% happy!

I like this make up a lot actually! I like the undereye liner too but not what looks like under eye eyeshadow. The hair is not what you asked for at all. Very confusing. They haven’t curled the top of your hair at all! Don’t know why, wish you could call the stylist and ask.

Good luck!

Definitely don’t settle if you have to try 10 different stylist before finding the right one, do it. This happens once so why feel funny about making sure it’s right. Couple of thoughts/questions are you going to 2 different people for hair and make-up or the same one for both? I grew up in LA and back in the days when Swingers came out I did the swing dance thing like all the rest. I learned A TON about this look. It’s tricky because it’s sooo basic. People tend to want to over do it. The shot with your eyes close doesn’t look like there’s much of a cat eye eyeliner, was that your choice? Are you wearing lashes? That also helps this look A LOT! As for the red lips if you’re wanting to go the classic Red (similar to the the 2nd pic - is that Isla fisher?) get a good nude lip liner and line the entire lip and get MAC Russian Red, though not sure if this color would work on you (I’m very pale skin dark hair light eyes peachy undertones). It’s a VERY classic red not to blue. Now pin curls can be tricky because the weight of the curl can actually weigh the hair down making it really flat. In the previous trials it looks like the curls are either too tight or not brushed out enough (like Ms. Bacalls are). Maybe do a search in your town for a stylist who specializes in rockabilly style, those gals KNOW their retro style and they take it seriously. Also maybe don’t bring any modern pictures with you. Maybe the stylists are paying too much attention to those and not enough to the classic look of the others? Oh and last question did you take the eye make up off from under your eye first just to see how it looked without all the stuff underneath? The under eye makeup TOTALLY throws the ENTIRE look off. Good luck in your search!

you look good! but not like those pictures - keep looking. I can’t believe that no one has been able to recreate that look for you! I could do your hair like this look, and I am no professional. Keep a positive attitude though - even though your looks aren’t matching the pix exactly, at least you can go out to dinner or dancing that night and look fabulous! And then, you’ll find the right hair/make up stylist, and you’ll have your wedding look. No problem!

Do not settle. I would suggest a different makeup artist/stylist. This is worth splurging! Out of all the looks, I think you look the best in your e-pics but the style was a bit casual for the wedding day. IMHO (of an amateur), I think your hair needs to be in rollers with a splash of spray and/or adhesive or undergo something to have volume all around before the curling starts. Right now, I feel that the stylist merely curls the bottom portion of your hair…. The makeup also isn’t right. It should look glowy and smooth but it looks kinda pale with tired eyes.

your stylist must be incompetent if she can’t “get” what you’re showing her and pointing out exactly what you want! Keep looking, you’ll find it! I think you need to play around with some hot rollers at home–they are key for an old glam look. That’s the ONLY way i can get my hair to get that curl in the front. I’ts doable, don’t settle

I can’t say I’m digging the makeup though. They didn’t smoke your eyes out as much as I think you wanted and the white that they did in the corners is really standing out to me……and I agree with the eyeliner on your bottom eye. A little bronzer maybe, too? Your face looks really matte…all one color, no dimension. Maybe it’s the lights, maybe it’s the makeup. Maybe a little foundation/concealer underneath would tidy up your eyes and help it not look gothy. And i like that lipstick on you; it looks more berry in the photos than red, though. It’s a pretty shade, but doesn’t scream Hollywood to me b/c i’ts not a classic vampy red =].

I still think you look gorgeous, though! I just know the look you have is not THE look you want and you should have exactly what you want! Keep searching! Maybe somebody on the hive can recommend someone your way

I wish I could send you my SIL….she is so good =(

You’re beautiful! You look like a Hollywood starlet! But don’t settle if you’re not 100% happy, which obviously you’re not.

I think you look beautiful! Your hair is gorgeous. But I understand what you are saying. The stylists are not completely nailing the look you want. I would keep looking. I really loved your make-up from your first trial. Maybe you could go back and get another hair trial from them? Best of luck! It can be such a long and tedious process!
