Mrs. Pretzel, Seattle Age and Occupation: 32 Learning, Training, and Development Specialist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28 Manufacturing Engineer Engagement Date: September 2, 2009 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: Catholic Church & The Engine Room at Georgetown Studios About Me: I’m just a thirty-something girl who never dreamed of weddings, poofy dresses, or ritzy receptions. I am a rabid knitter, except recently, wedding projects have replaced my yarn and needles. I’ve been fiercely independent since the age of 2 and 30 years later I think my family and friends had given up on me settling down and getting married. Ironically, I had to go all the way to Seattle to find a boy from Purdue. We fell in love over Seattle Beers and cooking together. I love NASCAR, he loves Legos. I can talk like a Muppet and he can fit a whole McDonald’s cheeseburger in his mouth. We are a two reception couple, currently planning a brewery inspired bash.

Pretzel Made to Order: Olivia Luca

December 24th, 2009 @ 6:35 pm by Mrs. Pretzel

It seems I am not alone in my aversion to bridal dress shopping. So many of you shared the same apprehension with me. But it wasn’t just the in person shopping that had me glum. After looking at countless magazines and online wedding dress galleries I wasn’t feeling any inspiration—in fact, I was feeling the opposite. I could rattle of long lists of things I didn’t want. No lace, no beads, no ruffles, no poof, no train, no bustle… ughhh. It’s hard to start designing a wedding dress from a list of negatives.

Thank goodness for Olivia Luca. This Portland OR based designer at least got my Pretzel brain thinking about wedding dresses. In brief, you select the bodice, skirt style, accents, fabrics and colors. The dress is made to a standard (i.e. not bridal) size. The fabrics are all natural fibers; most are sustainable and eco-friendly. I personally love Dupioni silk. Plus, the website is a blast.

Your model starts in a slip. I like this so much better than standing half naked in a dressing room. *grin*

Select your bodice style. There are a ton of variations to pick from.

Select a skirt length and shape. Much to my delight there are options with and without a train.

You can add detailing like a sash or bow. Personally I am a fan of the wide shirred sash.

Select your fabric, color and size and the computer crunches the numbers and displays your creation. Much to my delight my love of Dupioni Silk and my dislike of a train puts this creation at less than $600. I spent hours playing on this site, creating dress after dress and actually found myself enjoying the process.

I could see myself in one of these modern, clean-lined dresses. No-fuss and simple—I liked the idea. Did I get excited about any of the designs that I made? Not really. Did I think I had found a solution to my lack of enthusiasm about a wedding dress? For the time being…

Did you have a list of things you “didn’t want” going into dress shopping? What did you end up with? If you had your dress made, did you go in with a vision or build it piece by piece?

I actually had a very similar list of what I didn’t want in a dress - I saw myself in something simple, though I did want at least minimal detail to avoid having it be too plain. I ended up loving lots of Nicole Miller’s designs, and her prices are very affordable compared to many other designers.

Oh, I’ve always wanted to see Olivia Luca’s stuff IRL. I like to play with the doo-dad when I’m bored.

The dress I ended up falling in love with was pretty much the last dress I thought I’d end up with going into it. :p

I completely thought about getting an Olivia Luca dress, but I chickened out because I couldn’t try it on before I bought it. I was wishing I lived near Portland.

I did have a list of things I wanted and didn’t want before looking at dresses. Yet the dress I ended up with was quite unexpected (strapless w/a pickup skirt) and I loved it. I think you need to try on a few, you never know…

I knew I absolutely didn’t want a corset back and I didn’t want a mermaid because of my weird hip-to-torso length proportions. I love the dresses you made! I cannot wait to see what you ended up with!

These are gorgeous! I was certain I didn’t want lace or beading when I started looking for a dress–but I ended up with a dress with both! :)

Terri Spaeth-Merrick who owns Olivia Luca custom made my dress. I didn’t go through her website, but actually met with her and she designed my dress. It was gorgeous and she was great! I can’t reccommend her enough. PM me if you have any questions!

@Miss Guinea Pig: You actually don’t get to try them on. I think that is just one way she keeps her prices so affordable. You have to trust your measurements and order the right size. She cuts to standard sizes and I expect there may be minor alterations needed.

@oct10bride: Great to hear from someone who has worked with Terri! I ordered fabric swatches from her and the website didn’t like me or something- so I had to work with her to get the swatches and she was soooo helpful!
