About Mrs. Guinea Pig

A Crafty Career Woman

December 26th, 2009 @ 11:45 am by Mrs. Guinea Pig

On my birthday in November, I got a birthday gift from Mr. Guinea Pig, and boy oh boy was I excited: I got a sewing machine!

(Brother CS-6000i)

When I gushed to my friends about how excited I was that Mr. Guinea Pig got me a sewing machine, most of them looked at me suspiciously. As one (male) colleague put it, “He got away with giving you a sewing machine as a birthday gift?! That’s like saying, ‘honey, hem my pants, iron my shirts, and I’d like a souffle for dinner’.” What?! He went on to say that his girlfriend would kill him if he got her a sewing machine. I pointed out that I had pretty much straight-up asked for one, but that left most people unconvinced.

I was truly surprised at how many people thought this was some kind of secret plot by Mr. Guinea Pig to turn me into ’the perfect housewife’ who stays at home keeping the house sparkly clean, cooks a piping hot dinner every night and sews all our clothes after we get married. Come on folks, I’m a scientist! Generally people don’t slog through 6 years of grad school to get a PhD for the fun of it, you know! And Mr. Guinea Pig doesn’t think that suddenly when we get married I’ll give up the ’facade’ of grad school to stay home! Seriously?!

(Side note: there is nothing wrong with being a stay-at-home mom/wife. My mom didn’t work for many years while my sister and I were growing up and I think we probably turned out better because of it. But I am not cut out for that.)

(From this article, and she’s wearing our wedding colors! Ha.)

At first, the reaction to my excitement about sewing made me a little insecure. I started thinking, ‘Oh no! I do love to bake. I knit all kinds of stuff. I’m making hundreds of origami flowers. I love to vacuum. And now I can’t wait to sew! Am I just one giant old-fashioned stereotype? Should I give up on science and be a housewife?’ But of course I realized—NO WAY, I was being insane! I’m just someone who likes to make useful stuff. No more or less than that. As a physics major in college, I liked to assemble electrical circuits (which at the time was useful), and this is no different. I like making pretty (useful) stuff now, in large part thanks to our upcoming wedding. In fact, the wedding has certainly inspired me to be even more crafty than before!

And thanks to the numerous blogs out there (to mention only a very few), I know that a whole lot of people are crafty. Waaaay craftier than me (i.e. many of the Bees!), and a lot of them have a job while they create on the side! This realization made me feel a little silly for my earlier insecurity, and made me want to smack some sense into my friends and colleagues! So, I want a sewing machine. I bet they can’t re-cover their sofa on a whim. But I can! And I should be proud of that!

I can’t wait to put all of my crafty skills to use even more for our wedding. I’m considering making my bridal shower dress now that I know I am actually capable of sewing things! And I know that the most important thing to Mr. Guinea Pig is that I am happy, whether that involves making a new throw pillow cover every day, or doing a very complicated experiment in lab, or just sitting back and relaxing while he makes dinner (my favorite). I’m just a scientist who likes to make stuff!

Do you have a serious crafting habit? Have you ever gotten flack about it? Has your wedding inspired you to pick up new skills? What are you making for your wedding?

Gah, I hate how people say things like that…I mean, in this day and age, that’s the thing - you can CHOOSE what your interests are and you shouldn’t get flack for anything. So what if you like cooking and baking, cleaning or sewing? That’s your CHOICE!!

Yay!! I have te same machine too. I bought it about 3 months ago. My only issue when I bought the machine was I couldn’t sew but I took some classes and I am doing better. Good luck and please share your projects!

Aww…this reminds me of my MOH! She got and asked for a sewing machine for Christmas. We both love to scrapbook and she wanted to try and sew on some of her pages. I got a gypsy cricut machine for Christmas and I love them both! I dont see why people are going crazy over it…sewing machines are pretty expensive…even if they werent, its what you wanted and it made you happy! GO YOU! :) Although Im not doing any projects for the wedding…maybe a wedding scrapbook after, a few yrs ago I would have never saw myself with a cricut and a gypsy…but now I cant live without them! :) Happy Holidays!

I think people’s reactions says a lot more about their stereotypical beliefs than about you! Enjoy your new sewing machine and I hope you share some of your DIY crafty projects with us!

At one time, I knew how to crochet. I can sew, sort of, but I get stuck every time the bobbin runs out. :)

@krissycake: Seriously! It’s not like one of my hobbies is throwing rocks at people - I’m MAKING stuff for crying out loud!
@Mochacoca: Yay! I love my machine - I didn’t know how to sew when I got it either, but I was absolutely determined to learn and it went pretty quickly :) So far my projects aren’t wedding related, but I have a couple wedding ones up my sleeve for the near future!
@D.Marie: I’m jealous of your cricut :)
@jduck84: You’re so right - it does say a lot more about them. It just took me a little bit to realize that! Hm… I have yet to encounter a bobbin running out mid-project… now I’m worried!

I think that at some point during the whole women’s liberation movement when women turned in their aprons for briefcases we lost a little bit of crafting for fun. They didn’t want women to be associated with vacuums, baking, sewing, etc. so much so that now it’s looked upon as odd when a girl/lady wants a vacuum, baking supplies or sewing machine. While I am glad that women can now choose their career paths and staying at home isn’t the only option, I do realize that our society now has a new opinion of what a working women is and isn’t. Thank you for breaking the stereotype and showing that a women can do both have a career (be a scientist, no less) and have fun crafting at home.

I got a sewing machine for Christmas. Granted, it was from my mom and not Mr. KM, but I am SO excited about all the possibilities! I also bake. And craft other stuff (though I have yet to learn how to knit). And I constantly get the “oh, you’re going to be such a FUN mom!”… I don’t want kids and when I tell people that, I still get the look of disdain. Am I not allowed to make that choice anymore?

How fun! Sucks that people have had mixed reactions but oh well, if you’re happy then that’s all that matters…I wish I was more crafty but I just lack the gene, for the most part…Miss Cola’s crafts are crazy-good!

People are nuts now a days!! LOL!! I think they are voicing their own insecurities and I think that your male coworker was JEALOUS because his pants probably needed hemming :D… But I sooo want a sewing machine AND a cricut!!! I think the bees have gotten to me lol!!! I also baked cookies the other night and M loved them… I haven’t made any from scratch yet, but I am using KM’s recipe for almond cookies tee hee we’ll see how they turn out!! I was a career woman for years and am half excelling at being a partial SAHM (the spotless house hot dinner eludes me most days) but I have the best fun EVER getting my little ones to bed or off the bus or making sure they are okay. I am happy that you said your mom stayed home and you think you’re the better for it! That means a lot because sometimes I wonder if I’m making the right decision (even though I own my business) it’s still a thought in my head going, omg you have graduated from college and you make HOW MUCH?!

I think it’s awesome to ask for what you want and get it! I love when people tell me what they want for Christmas and birthdays. Even though it may take some of the excitement out of it, I’m happy giving people what they truly want and they’re happy cause they actually got it! Tell your co-worker to suck it and enjoy the ties and socks he got for Christmas.

@Charm bracelet: thanks for the support! I think there are lots of women out there who do both, especially in the hive!
@KMSull: Yay! I bet you find the sewing machine addictive! I get so obsessed with a project I tend to finish them in 2 days, but by the end I’m exhausted!
@crebre80: Seriously, I think just reading Weddingbee has exponentially increased my craftiness. So much inspiration everywhere! And you should do what makes you happy, especially if it means spending more time with your kids!
@Miss Nachos: I used to feel bad about getting people stuff on their wishlist, but when I think about how much I want the stuff on my wishlist, I realize that it’s totally fine! Also, I tell that particular coworker to suck it all the time :)

I learned to sew just a few days ago, true story. (When I say “learned to sew” I mean threading a needle and stumbling around). I’m craft-fail.

Also, pfft. Wishlists are totally ok. :)

P.S. I want a sewing machine now too. I just think I might need a little more practice first.

I totally wanted a sewing machine for a long time! But mine was more for the need of making garb for our re-enactment habit. I haven’t come up with a reason to use it for the wedding yet.

I grew up sewing on my Mom’s machine. She is the sewing master! But now I’m 400 miles away, so I needed my very own.

I really wish that I knew how to sew. I’m unable to even sew on a button! My mom has a sewing machine though, maybe I’ll give it a try and see if that’s any better than the hand sewing I know I can’t do.

@Miss Frozen Yogurt: Same here. I was told in the 4th grade I should never sew again. Mean teacher!

@Miss Frozen Yogurt, Miss Scissors: A sewing machine is sooooo much easier/better than hand sewing! I would never have the patience to hand-sew stuff. But the sewing machine is so quick it’s addictive!
