About Mrs. Nachos

Insecurities

December 28th, 2009 @ 2:26 pm by Mrs. Nachos

I’ve had something on my mind that I always think about when I go on vacation. To most people, it doesn’t sound like a scary prospect, but bear with me here. I am one of those girls that always wears makeup. I promise, it’s not a vanity thing for me, it’s more of a ‘I’ve been wearing makeup for so long that I don’t think people would recognize me if I didn’t’-thing. I think a lot of it also has to do with the warping of my mind after working in salons for so long, where you are expected to have a certain image. The salon mentality has always been: if you don’t look presentable, your client will not trust that you can make them look presentable. Hence, for 9 years now, I’ve been surrounded by makeup, hair products, perfume, pretty much anything related to making yourself look and feel and smell good.

I also have a little secret. I can’t believe I’m posting this for all of you to see, but this was my 8th grade picture…

Insecurities : wedding makeup Me me

I had an unusually loooong awkward stage, and 20 years later at 32 years old, I still have a large part of that geeky looking, shy, only red-head in my class, in me. Anyone that has known, or is, a true red-head knows that our eyebrows are blonde. Our eyelashes are blonde. Most are pale, and have lots of freckles. I, by some fortunate grace, actually can tan, and I love my freckles. The eyebrows and eyelashes, however, are a different story. Pretty much since high school when I was finally allowed to wear makeup, I’ve been darkening both with cosmetics. (I’ve actually been thinking about sharing a post on my makeup step-by-step since I’ll be doing my own makeup for my wedding and I’ve been doing makeup for years.)

Anywho, how does all of this pertain to my wedding, you ask?

Beach = Water = No makeup

I’m trying to chant to myself every morning as I’m putting on my face that I don’t need it. That I’m beautiful without. That it’s just our families and friends. But then my insecurities get the best of me, which they tend to do a lot. I honestly think the one thing that scarred me the most in this arena was a little trip I took to Jamaica with an ex. I was so gung-ho about being able to be free with no makeup and no worries for a week, until the first time we were getting ready to go somewhere. He said something along the lines of, “maybe you should wear a little makeup”. Grrrrrr. Needless to say, that relationship did not last long, but it’s the little negative comments that always seem to stick with you.

Now I KNOW Mr. ’Chos loves me no matter what and he’s seen me more than anyone without makeup. Heck, he knew me when I was in 8th grade (see awkward photo above) and before, and I don’t think twice about prancing around the house au natural. And of course, it’s the same with my family. So I guess my insecurity in this situation is more of me “crawling out of my comfort zone” since I’m so used to seeing a certain face in the mirror that won’t be there.

I’ve been tempted to dye my eyebrows for the trip, which I’ve done before, but honestly, they tend to not take too well and fade after a week, so there really is no point. There’s also the worry that they’ll turn out too dark and I’ll look like Groucho Marx. Trust me. It’s happened. Could you imagine the wedding pictures!?!

Then there’s always the waterproof mascara route, but when I’ve tried that in the past, any time I’m in water I worry that I’ll still end up with raccoon eyes.

So, I think I have finally convinced myself to be OK with a naked face for 2 weeks. I think once I get past the first day and realize that I’m the only one thinking I look strange, I should be OK.

Are you also the type of person to always have a made-up face? Do you think you could go for 2 weeks without putting your face on?

I’m a fan of makeup, but I don’t wear much if it all the time. at minimum eyeliner, concealer and mascara. I always take my makeup on vacation with me, so I guess I’m confused - what can’t you take it with you? You mean for the beach vacay part - not the wedding part? I usually waterproof products and don’t have much of an issue. When I lived in Miami I’d wear light make up to the beach all the time - just don’t’ rub too hard!

Besides - you’re beautiful, you can go two weeks without make up if you’d like :)

I feel like I look TERRIBLE and so strange without makeup, especially black eyeliner.

You are gorgeous and will look fabulous sans makeup, swear!

You are gorgeous Nachos, you will look fabulous without makeup on the beach! Maybe you should practice by not wearing makeup one day this week and leaving the house! I generally don’t go out of the house without at least powder (stupid shiny face) and mascara, but the days when I don’t wear any makeup, no one seems to notice :) Also I totally appreciate your 8th grade photo, it looks suspiciously like mine, except mine was brown straight hair, WITH glasses!! I had no idea you were a redhead! If it’s possible, I now love you even more.

I always like to wear at least mascara cause I feel like I have super teeny eyes. But for a vacation I usually let it slide.
You’re really pretty and I’m sure once you get past the first day of no makeup you’ll be more comfortable.

Oh. My. Gosh. You are brave. No way, no how, could I go 2 whole weeks without make-up. Since I’ve been solely freelancing, I wear a lot less make-up than I used to, because my clients are booking me based on my portfolio not based on my face, but I know how you feel! When I was in-store, I couldn’t go without a 100% flawless full face. It was craziness.

I understand how you feel about makeup. Even with concealor and powder people still sometimes say I look tired–um, thanks. I was graced with very dark undereye circles and I feel that I look like I’ve been punched in the eyes. It’s all how we see ourselves. I agree with Miss GP, try it once this week. Maybe make it a weekend day so you don’t have the stress of work to add to it. I have light brown curly hair and while my eyebrows are okay it’s my eyelashes that are blonder than blonde, I swear. Try some different waterproof mascaras, they aren’t supposed to make raccoon eyes—are you sure you weren’t confusing that with regular mascara?

I am a blonde and have very light eyebrows and eyelashes..
I get tired of wearing makeup in the summer (lake, pool,etc.).
So I get my eyelashes tinted black, lasts about a month but I highly recommend it!!! It even helps mine curl easier!

Oh, I love your hair color! Just gorgeous.

Personally I have a hard time sticking to my resolution to always wear mascara to work. I’m a blond and my eyelashes are invisible without it so mascara helps a lot to make me look more awake. But truth is I still end up make up less at work about 50% of the time. Doesn’t seem to be a problem. And off work, forget it! Except for special occasion, for which I love make up.

I always wear makeup, and when we went to the Virgin Islands this year I wore a small amount of waterproof mascara, wet n’ wild eyebrow pencil…. and that’s pretty much it, save for the lip stain from Cover Girl with the balm that comes with it. It took two seconds to do in the room in the morning, and unless you rub your eyes and face HARD - it didn’t go anywhere.

#1 - You’re gorgeous, even in your “awkward” 8th grade photo.
#2 - That ex of yours was an ass, and I can see why he’s an ex!
#3 - I used to be totally addicted to hairspray. Seriously - it was unhealthy. And I still remember, back in 9th grade, showing up late for school one day, when I hadn’t had time to do my hair. And you know what? The world failed to implode. No one pointed at me and laughed. And I finally realized that all of the crap I had been doing wasn’t really necessary - I looked fine without it. You’ll look fabulous, with or without makeup, on your wedding day.

I hate when I have no eye make up on but when I’m at the beach I wear sunglasses and look fantastic anyway bc no one can see!! lol

I did just start using Latisse though so I do have a presence of more eye lashes on our honeymoon and don’t have to put on mascara.

PS- your 8th grade pic looks a lot like some of my own around that age!!! Just I have brown eyes and the hair is a tad more brown then red (now I will never live w/o blonde highlights).

I hear youuu! I hate the thought of being makeup-less. We don’t have our honeymoon booked as of yet, but it is going to be something beachy for sure…and I’m freaking out at the thought of being sans-makeup for a week! I will probably bring it along and just make sure I wear some when I’m anywhere that people will see us!

dealing with eyebrows and eyelashes is such a pain! i’ve found some really wonderful waterproof brow pencils, but i simply don’t think you need them! you’re gorgeous; you’re on vacation; and you’re only with people you love. toss the makeup!

your ex’s comment made me so angry. what a JERK.

I never leave the house without “my face on.” And I especially do not go to the beach without a full face of make-up! Vacation = pictures and the sunglasses have to come off at some point! I buy water proof mascara and use Jafra foundation and eye shadow. It honestly stays on through hours of sweat, ocean water, pool water and whatever else you might do on your honeymoon ;) Plus the foundation and powder have a little SPF, I swear by Jafra!

I’m totally with you — I hate not wearing makeup (I have under eye circles that rival a raccoon), and although Mr. FF is used to it, I have a feeling other people would be frightened by it.

You’re beautiful, and I’m sure you’ll look great no matter if you’re wearing makeup or not. ;)

I think you look like Molly Ringwald in the 8th grade (one of my FAVES!!) and waterproof mascara is the way to go. I think you’ll be fine at the beach with no makeup!! I saw your profile pic btw and you are a haute chica!!!

I hate wearing makeup, but I love what it does for *ding ding ding* my blonde eyelashes! Not only do people not recognize me when I don’t wear mascara, but they also mistake me for being about 8 years younger than I am. Which is to say, they can’t decide whether I’m 12 or 13. (Seriously. They have to ask because they can’t decide whether to charge child or adult admission to movies, etc.) People tell me I will appreciate this later in life (and I’m sure I will), but for now it’s just plain weird. In any case, I think makeup is a pain.

I’m blonde, and as such I never go anywhere without putting on my eyelashes and eyebrows (mascara and eyebrow pencil). Otherwise, I just look tired. Not sure why pale eyelashes and eyebrows that are so pale they are almost non-existent lead to me looking tired, but they do. I recently tried out eyelashes only - I think it works for casual days. So, when I’m at the beach/on the honeymoon, I think I’ll only have waterproof mascara - until dinner time when I can get all gussied up (and put on my eyebrows) :-)

I’m not much of a make-up person. Only recently have I started wearing it daily, and I’ve started to feel not as pretty without it.
You definitely don’t need full make-up on the beach, though! Maybe some tinted lip gloss and a little cream blush would do the trick to make you feel a little more put together?

I don’t wear makeup on a daily basis, I would like to, but most of the time just can’t be bothered to make the effort. I definitely will for the wedding though. I would love a tutorial from someone who does it all the time- especially from a red-head perspecitive!!
