Running in the Winter is Hard!

December 28th, 2009 @ 11:25 am by Mrs. Trail Mix

Yup, the title of this post says it all. Trying to train for any type of running event during the winter months can be a pretty demoralizing experience. Add in a few weeks of holiday craziness and we’ve got a recipe for becoming a total slacker on marathon-training right here.

First of all, may I just say to all you readers who live in warm climates, where snow, ice, wind and -15 degree temperatures are non-existent, I am tres, tres jealous! I am genuinely envious of being able to go outside without donning 20 million layers of clothing beforehand. Also, this post probably won’t be that interesting, so go soak up some sun or wear flip flops outside or something. :)

What are the perils to training outside in the winter weather? Let’s talk about a few…

1. Cold. This one is a no-brainer but it’s still important to consider! I only wear wicking fabrics (i.e. not cotton) that keep my body from getting too cold while running and sweating. Personally, I love these socks-

these gloves-

and a jacket like this-

When I run in cold weather, here’s a breakdown of what I typically wear: Performance socks, Spandex, long-sleeved Under Armour, another long sleeve shirt, a fleece vest, a lightweight jacket (depending on the temperature) gloves, and earmuffs. Whoof, that’s a lot to put on! No wonder training in the winter takes so much more time…

Which leads me to my next point:

2. Time. As in, less time to run because of the lack of sunlight. I know it varies by location, but right now in New York City, it gets dark around 4:30. This means that I either have to drag my butt out of bed pretty early in the morning to get a run in or try and rush home after work, but either way, it’s always stressful trying to figure out when I’ll have enough time to do my workouts.

3. Motivation. I am constantly waging an internal battle in my head. The good little angel side says to get out there and run and reminds me that I won’t be able to perform in the Boston Marathon as well as I hope to if I don’t train. But then the bad little devil side pipes up with thoughts like, ‘But it takes so long to get ready and it’s 10 degrees outside,’ or ‘But I’d so much rather lay on the couch, watch Say Yes to the Dress and eat the thousands of holiday cookies I’ve been the recipient of.’ It’s always a close call which side wins the war.

4. Ice, snow, rain, sleet and wind. All of these things can make running outside pretty dangerous. Although I’ve never taken a spill, I know several people who have. If you live in a climate where there is snow on the ground for a good portion of the winter, it might make sense to invest in a pair of these:

They’re treads for your shoes, much like treads for snow tires! Brilliant, no??

When all else fails and going outside just feels like too much work, you can always hop on the treadmill instead. Although I’ve been avoiding the treadmill like the plague, marathon training during the long winter months might force me indoors for some runs. We’ll see what happens as winter progresses…

Any other winter runners out there? Do you feel hardcore like I do whenever you make it outside for a run?

I trained for a half marathon starting in early Dec. last year. I did long runs outside on Saturdays, but otherwise, I used the treadmill. Training outside in the winter was just too much. However, I do think that optimal training weather is between 40 and 60 degrees, so the warm weather people have their turn to deal with unforgiving weather in summer.

I’m kind of a baby about running outside in the cold. The cold air really bothers my sinuses! So I mostly train indoors at this time of year! If it’s above freezing I will run outside though. I have really toasty tights and an underarmour hat to keep my ears warm!

Ohh… I am a winter runner too. Upstate NY is pretty chilly, although yesterday was a perfect winter run with high 30’s, dry bike path, and sunshine!

But I too have to layer up and find someway to get the motivation to get my butt moving. The short days are tough, but I got lots of running loot for Christmas (long thermal tights, fleece headband, warm socks, etc…) so hopefully I’ll keep at it!

Unless it dips below 10 degrees, I’ll take running in the cold over a treadmill just about every time. I actually find it somewhat easier to run in the winter that in the middle of the summer, since the days are so long and hot that it’s hard to get out there then as well.

I love when people look at me with amazement when they hear that I run outside in the winter!

TrailMix, you are totally hardcore! I’m always totally wowed when I see people out running in Boston in the middle of the winter. I usually stick to the gym in the winter… but I do love cross country skiing, and I am always totally happy to layer on the clothes when it comes to that activity :-)

I hate running outside, and I certainly won’t do it in the winter. But I love all your running tips, TM! I will stick to looking out the windows as I pass them at the gym :)

I just wish that there were a way to kill the “sucking in cold air” part. I HATE that. It just kills me.

Miss Scissors, have you tried running w/ a scarf around your mouth? That might help w/ the “sucking in the cold air,” i hate that too, it burns me.
I just moved to more tropical climates and made the mistake of trying to run outside in june. Around mid-December it FINALLY got cool enough that I can run outside and not sweat buckets or have to get up at 5am to run before it gets hot. I’d rather run in the cold than run when it’s crazy hot and humid and gross. I envy you!

For me, the biggest problem with running in the cold is sweating! Granted, it doesn’t get as cold down here in Houston as it does in New York, but we have our share of days in the 30s. After a hard run, I’m always sweating and then I get chilled because my sports bra is damp. I try my best not to get too wet (read: run in bra, singlet, shorts, cap, and maybe gloves, unless the temp is below 32).

One word–treadmill. I switch to running on the treadmill in the winter. I just can’t stomach the ice/snow/slush/cold air.

I’m a fellow winter runner as well and I hear you with all the factors that make running this time of year so difficult. I’ve taken to running after work on well lit route and I do my long runs on the weekends. I’m also training for a spring marathon. The nice thing is that the local running routes aren’t as crowded as they are in the summer.
It takes a real hardcore runner to keep it up in the winter, just think how good you feel when you’re done!

Wow, those treads look pretty cool. I have those gloves (even though I’m not a major runner) - I like the little pocket for the key.

I HATE winter running. I’m training for my first 1/2 marathon that is on Memorial Day weekend and living in Michigan does not help. I think what gets me the most is the snot. Whenever I go outside my nose inevitably starts running. That combined with my asthma and the cold weather effects keep me inside on the treadmill. I find a couple good shows and just run my heart away watching the TV.

This past week though, well that’s another story entirely. Christmas go the best of me.

Wow you are dedicated! During the wet, cold winter season you’ll only find me running indoors around the track.

Thanks for this post! It gave me a little kick in the butt to get out there and run in the cold! I actually don’t mind it somehow. I used to HATE it but now I have learned to appreciate the cold (anything is better than 90 degrees and humid!) Plus, you’re right- it IS hardcore!

I’ve been out of the running habit for a few months because of an injury, but for years I ran in any weather and any temperature between 10 and 90 degrees. In the beginning, I would just wear sweatpants, but eventually I invested in a bunch of pricey, high-tech, super-warm running clothes and love them to pieces.

I’m a morning exerciser, so I’d be up and out the door (in the dark, snowy winter) at 5:30 a.m. I live in Boston, and it gets pretty freakin’ cold here, so I definitely felt hardcore. I can’t wait to get back into it.

I wish I had the motivation to run in the winter! But, this 20 degree weather and I do not get along.

Yeah, Miss Scissors. The cold air is the worst part. It makes my lungs burn.

Haha, I wore flip flops yesterday! I can’t believe how dedicated you are, I wouldn’t want to even get bundled up to go to work, much less to exercise if I lived in a cold environment! I’m a cold (and heat!) wimp.
