About Mrs. Guinea Pig

I’ve never been too keen on the idea of favors. I don’t know why, but I just have a hard time wrapping my head around the idea, and definitely couldn’t justify a large price tag for them. Of course, what I thought before planning a wedding and what I think while planning a wedding are often two different things, it turns out.

No lace/beading/detailing on my wedding dress? –> Sure, I’ll buy that lace dress!

No need for flowers to decorate the ceremony space? –> Yes, why don’t we add some arrangements at the ’altar’!

Why waste money on fancy shmancy printing techniques? –> Swoon over, then “must have” letterpress invites!

{Sigh… don’t worry, I’ve reined it in elsewhere}

So, it’s really no surprise to me that after swearing off expensive (or any?) favors, I fell in love with an idea that’s sure to prove pricey. I’ve had this idea in the back of my mind since I first saw them, so I decided it was finally time to figure out how much they would actually cost, and whether it is reasonable. Curious what it is, yet? The title of this post really gives it away…

Thank You for Coming! Now Bake Yourself Some Cookies... : wedding favors food Bakeral bakeral

(Cowgirl cookies, from Bakerella)

I have long been obsessed with Bakerella’s blog, where she bakes amazingly creative, delicious treats! She’s the main creative force behind a super cute treat known as cake pops (and cupcake pops)! These are fun, adorable, tasty balls of cake mixed with frosting, shaped into balls, then coated in chocolate and decorated with sprinkles, more chocolate, etc - what’s not to like?! I made a bunch of egg shaped ones at Easter and brought them to Mr. Guinea Pig’s family party for the kids to decorate, which was a complete success! (Give kids chocolate, sprinkles, and cake, and they will love you forever).

(The two on the left could be Miss Chick and Mr. Chick!)

Here’s another application of cake pops she made recently that would be totally awesome for weddings that Miss Frozen Yogurt already mentioned!

Thank You for Coming! Now Bake Yourself Some Cookies... : wedding favors food Bakerel bakerel

(these were used by a guy to propose through her blog!)

I briefly considered making these as favors, but these kind of take forever to decorate if you’re being careful, and they’re small so you wouldn’t really be able to have one per couple. That would mean making ~175 of them in the week leading up to the wedding (so that they’re still fresh). Just baking/making 24 (and only decorating 8 - kids decorated the rest) of them for Easter was a serious time commitment!

The jars with a mix for cookies, however, could be made one per couple - I’m picturing them with blue and yellow M&Ms, our names and wedding date on the jar, and some cute floral fabric for the top! Everyone knows how much I love to bake (and Mr. Guinea Pig loves cookies!) so this would be great! Each jar makes about two dozen cookies and the guests would just have to add 1 egg, 1/2 cup butter and 1 tsp of vanilla when they are ready to bake them. The downsides are the cost, and the fact that there would only be one favor per couple. We’d have to get those glass jars, fabric for the top, string to tie them, specific M&M colors, and all the ingredients! It’s time to estimate the cost for 80 of these jars (this is assuming each couple/family takes one, which might not make people happy?)…

Breakdown of ingredients:

  • The glass jars used are 1 quart smooth Ball jars (no logo) - I’ve found these at $13 for 12, so they’re a little over $1 per jar. So, that would be $91 for enough jars.
  • The M&Ms are $6.99 for 7 oz of a particular color, or $57.99 for 5 lbs. The recipe calls for both M&Ms and chocolate chips and originally I thought I would sub the brown chocolate chips for colored M&Ms, but these suckers are expensive! So instead, I would mix both colors into the 3/4 cup of M&Ms called for. Except I can’t quite figure out how many ounces of M&Ms would be in 3/4 cup so… for now let’s assume I get a 5 lb bag of each color M&M (wow, that’s a lot of M&Ms). Total = $116.

Thank You for Coming! Now Bake Yourself Some Cookies... : wedding favors food M26ms m26ms

(screenshot from www.mymms.com)

  • I’d need about 30 lbs of flour (all my estimating below is done like this: for flour, 1 cup = (approx) 4.4 oz, I need 1.33 cups/recipe = 5.9 oz, 80 of those = 470 oz, and at 16 oz/pound that’s about 30 lbs!). I found a 40 lb bag on Amazon for $40, but the shipping is not free so I’d need to look at local places. I imagine Costco would have something for around this price that we could pick up with no shipping fee!
  • Next up is white sugar, of which I’d need about 18 lbs. I think this would cost about $25, judging from a couple different 10 lb bag sources.
  • We’d also need brown sugar, so that’s 20 lbs of brown sugar, which appears to be about $35
  • Now for the oats - 9 lbs of Quaker oats would be $23 on Amazon, and I’d probably need 2 of those, so that total is $46.
  • For the chocolate chips, I’d need about 20 lbs, which should be around $70
  • I’ll just estimate another $50 for the baking soda/powder/salt contributions!

Grand total: ~ $473, or $5.91 per jar. If each jar is for two people, that’s almost $3 per person!

Personally, I’m having sticker shock. Oh! And I forgot the fabric + twine + stickers. Yikes! There is no way I’m willing to spend that much on favors! … Right?! And yet, I can’t seem to let go of this idea…

What do you think is the typical amount spent on favors? Would you like to get this favor, as a guest? What is the best favor you’ve received at a wedding?

I think it’s a super sweet idea. I know i’d love to make use of it. But I wonder if maybe making up that recipe of cookies a few weeks ahead and freeze them and then bag up 2-3 cookies in cute bags as a favors might be something to consider. I found a bakery near my wedding site that would bake and bag with a ribbon really cute sugar cookies decorated in a shape of my choice for less than $3 each. Or if you bake them. There’d be far less ingredients required and cost. I’d worry a bit if it might be difficult to travel with the jar if folks are flying and although I know I’d make use of it, I’d worry that many guests would enjoy and eat up cookies, might never get around to making up a batch themselves.

This is a cute favor and I would love it, but I wouldn’t spend the $ on it. I think typical cost of a favor is about $2 per person. Best favors I’ve gotten are coasters, wine topper, incense, and anything edible.

I love Bakerella too, and have been obsessing over her cake/cupcake pops for some time now! I even went so far as to consider making them. And then I reigned myself in and realized that in no way could I make those. However, on to favors! What if you reduced the recipe so that you wouldn’t need quite as many ingredients? Or maybe just do the M&Ms, oats and brown sugar and let people add their own flour and sugar? Just a thought! But I do love those!

I think it’s a cute idea, but as a guest I think I’d rather have a bag of cookies to eat! These seem pretty pricy for something that may never get baked. The glass containers could be a problem for guests who are flying in. On a personal basis, I have gotten gifts like this and never used them. If I’m going to the trouble of making cookies, I’m going to make a batch of one of my favorites. I love to bake too, but as a guest I’d rather have a treat to enjoy on my drive home, or the next day.

Michael’s has the color M&Ms. It would take several trips with coupons but it would help with the cost.

they could work great perhaps as a wedding shower favor! it’d be a smaller group and perhaps up the chances that folks in attendance will make use of it for sure.

That jar is insanely adorable, first of all.

What about cutting down the recipe size for a smaller jar? Instead of 2 dozen, 1 dozen, heck, even 4 cookies. It’s not the statement of the big jar, but it would still be cute!

At European weddings, it is customary to give one favour per couple/family, so you shouldn’t be worried about that.
As well, you could consider using smaller jars that would make about 1 dozen cookies; that could also be an option for you.

Ummm…I absolutely love this idea. What if you got smaller jars and cut the recipe in half? That might curb some of the costs. Although, if the original recipe calls for 1 egg, it’s sort of hard to mix in 1/2 an egg. Hmm.

The other thing you could do is make a bunch of them (but not enough for 1 per couple) and set them on a table for guests to take as they leave. Perhaps a sign saying “Love to bake like Mrs. GP? Grab a jar and bake yourself some yummy cookies!” might deter people who don’t like baking from taking a jar of the mix.

Just an idea!

@Miss French Fries: You can still make the recipe say 1 egg, even if you cut it in half. The cookies will just rise more.

I think it’s a cute idea, but the price would make me hesitate too. Have you looked into buying the flour, etc. at Costco or Sam’s Club? If someone you know has a membership, that might save some money, too.

It’s a really cute idea, but why don’t you give half batches in pint jars per couple. That would halve the cost, still make the cute point and also make about a dozen of cookies for a couple to share.

I would suggest for halving the egg, go for the yolk only or just tell them to use half of one beaten egg. Maybe make a test batch at home to see how it works and go from there? :)

Instead of doing them for every guest, maybe you could do them for just the out of town guests. That way, you could still use the idea (super cute!) and get it out of your system, and come up with something less costly for the favors.

This is such a fun and yummy idea! Sticker shock, a little…but I bet with some 40% off coupons, etc, you might be able to bring the cost down!

That price is way too high for a favor - seriously! my family has done things like this for holidays (Easter, Christmas, etc) and it’s pricey just making them for 5 couples! What about just abking some cookies and giving three to each person? Could you split the recipe in 1/2 and get smaller jars thereby lowering your costs? People fail to realize how expensive baking can get! I like making the cake pops - but man are they time consuming! I made cake balls once and now people are constantly requesting them! It’s pricey - and I think you could either just forego these and any other favors or find something less hefty on the wallet.

I love these! :) I agree, though - a bit on the pricey side. I am going to bake my own favors - I figure people would like a treat to take home and more people will eat it. To me, your baking supply prices seem a little high, but living in Idaho I know that our prices are cheaper (I’m using the bulk bins from our local Winco for supplies).

@Carrie: Hm, I completely forgot that some people will have to put this in luggage. Duh.
@Miss bliss: I also never considered that people wouldn’t make them! Maybe it’s because I love to bake so much and it seems like an easy way to have cookies from scratch, I just assumed that eventually people would use it. Good point!
@diorable, Miss French Fries, Mrs. Ballet Flat: Ooh, I hadn’t considered halving the recipe and putting them in pint jars - thanks! I’ll have to test out the measurements for that…
@Miss French Fries: also, I like the idea of baking the cookies then leaving the mix just for people who actually want it!
@UCLAMeghan: I was just looking at prices I could find online, I haven’t actually ventured to our Costco to get prices from there, but it could end up less expensive. I doubt it would be enough to make this feasible though!

These are a super cute favor but I can’t get past the price. Why not just bake the cookies and stick them in a cute bag with fabric and twine?
I’m planning to make caramel apples for our favors but haven’t yet priced them out.

Seems too expensive and time-consuming. I’ve been at several weddings without favors and never missed it. Once in a while you get something cute to munch on, but it’s never like “oh, wow, that made the wedding!” It’s more like oh, that’s nice. And then you forget about it 10 minutes later. But maybe that’s just me… I’d rather splurge on nice wine or something that enhances the experience and celebration because I think people feel really emotional at weddings and most small details aren’t that important.
