Mrs. Poodle's Picture
Mrs. Poodle, Santiago, Chile/San Bernardino, CA Age and Occupation: 27, Industrial & Web Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Firefighter & Mountain Patrol Engagement Date: February 25, 2009 Wedding Date: January 2010 Venue: Mr. P's Grandparents’ Ranch About Me: I’m a Chilean girl who's crazy about nature and swimming. I enjoy carving, drawing, reading and sewing; I drool over computers, fabric, pretty paper, purple and patterns. To me, chocolate should be one of the seven wonders, right next to lemon pie. I never thought an exchange work experience program was going to change my life forever, but while working in California, I met Mr. Poodle, and ever since my days are better and brighter. We are two goofy souls that, after finding each other, couldn’t help but want to be together forever. It has being a long and sometimes hard road, since we have to deal with such a long distance between us, but we are now facing the last stage of our Fiancé Visa, and soon we will be together. You know the best part? We will be married! So I’ll be blogging from Chile until just a few months before our “green and purple” wedding.

The Poodles’ Guestbook – Help!

December 28th, 2009 @ 6:28 pm by Mrs. Poodle

The first time I saw this guestbook over at the Classic Bride blog, I fell in love with the Tree Guest Book with thumbprints idea! How cool would it be to have such a personal stamp from every one of our guests?

Later while buzzing around on the boards, I saw that one of the hive members, Roddy Bride (one of my first “blog friends”), was actually planning on doing this, too! I could not wait to see her finished product! I was so excited when she finally shared her guestbook. :) It’s so AWESOME!

They painted their tree on a canvas and the look is so pretty!

So, inspired by the pictures above, I decided to draw our own version of a wedding tree. :)

I opened my beloved Illustrator program and got to work. I drew as many branches as I could on our tree so each guest can have space to place their print, since we still don’t know how many guests we will end up having. I just drew 190 leaves and then added some more so I lost count… I hope we don’t have more than that number of guests! LOL

I wanted it to be very personalized, so I drew our names on the branches. I love the result!

I showed my progress of the drawing to my MOH (She’s staying with us for a few weeks, YAY!) and she laughed at me because she said it was kind of funny looking. :P But that’s OK, she always says I’m funny looking, too… so I know she liked it!

So, this is the finished version, but I need to replace the leaves with our guests’ thumbprints.

I also personalized it with our wedding date.:) I’m such a sucker for carved stuff!! But don’t worry, I don’t carve anything on actual live trees, just on pieces of wood or in computer drawings… hehe!

But in order to get our tree to appear to be full of leaves, we need our guests to know where to place their thumbs and to guide them a little bit. I thought about leaving a slight shade of green for the leaves so our guests can see exactly where to place their prints, But I’m not sure if this is a good idea.

I’m searching for a cool BIG vintage frame to use with it, and I’ll be printing a big canvas. I think the final one I make will be about 20” x 25”, or maybe even bigger.

I am planning on getting a sign with directions so our guests can practice before they print their thumbprints. But I’m still not sure what option for the actual poster will be the best. So, I come to the hive for advice!

Option A: No leaves at all, just the branches. This is so our guests can place their prints any way they’d like.

Option B: Leaves with a 20% opacity, so the guests can see them and use them as a little guide where they can place their thumbprints on top of.  I don’t want the printed leaves to be opaque enough to be too noticeable.

Which do you think is the best option?

Option A, definitely. I think it might get cluttered/confusing with the light op. ones.

Brilliant job though, madam. I love it!

I prefer no leaves at all to give them artistic freedom and I love the idea!!

I think either would be great, but I’ve got a couple of.. uhm.. slower… family members that I can see screwing it up, lol, so I would probably do the 20% opacity. I absolutely love this idea Poodle! I’m still up in the air with my guest book.

That’s awesome! I love that your names are in the branches! I like option A too. :)

Hmm.. I think a bit of guidance is needed, but perhaps you could do the naked tree branches, but have you and Mr Poodle start it off by doing a few prints to guide your guests and show them how to do it?

Love this idea, too!!

I like option A but to provide your guests with some guidance how about having the bridal party and maybe parents do it in advance (at the rehearsal?) under your guidance in hopes that the other guests will follow suit.

LOVE IT! I think option A is the best choice. with option B, if you end up having less than 190 guests, you’d have some 20% opacity leaves floating in there.

i think no matter what option you go with, you should have your bridesmaids do their prints first so that guests can see what the finished product should look like.

I think the little sticks pointing out of the branches in Option A should be good, the opaque leaves might get confusing! As others have said - maybe you guys and your bridal party should get it started (perhaps the day before the wedding so the ink washes off?!) so people can see what they’re supposed to do!

people will “get it” with option A. The opaque would make it more confusing and I wouldn’t want to cover up the opaque leaves with my thumbprint. Maybe put a little instruction sign next to the print and have the picture of Roddy Bride’s guest book so people can see exactly what you are hoping to get?

I agree with Guinea pig, the little sticks in option A are guidance for them. But I seriously LOVE this idea. And who knew you were such a pro at Illustrator too! Um..is there anything you can’t do??

I think everyone will get it without the pre-printed leaves. What if you put a card on the table with a cute little poem as directions? Something like….

Leave us a leaf print as our guest
So we can look back and know how much we are blessed.

I know, cheesy, but you get my point!

I think A is best so the guests can do their own thing and not be worried if it looks perfect. Awesome tree btw! :)

i like option a. maybe you can have some of your bridal party or family members put their prints and names first to have an example. that way when the first of the guests arrive, they’ll have an idea of what to do

i LOVE this idea!! I think option A would work the best! It will also make it more unique if everyone just goes with the flow! Look how beautiful your inspiration tree was and it doesnt seem like there was any guidance there! I might have to steal this from you for my wedding!! If you dont mind :-)

I think Option A will give you a more organic looking tree rather than Option B. This is a great idea and I’m super impressed with your illustrator skills!

I really prefer the “no leaf” option and like the suggestion of having your rehearsal dinner guests get things started, so other reception guests will be able to discern what to do. And I’m assuming you’ve thought of this, but you will have some sort of cleaning apparatus at the guest book table, correct? I’d hate to see your dress emerge covered in green thumbprints!

I’m in the minority with voting for Option B, because I think those leaves look so pretty on the tree (although you’ll get that same effect with Option A once people fill in the tree). And can I just say - I get so excited every time I see one of your DIY posts - you are the DIY queen!

I, too, was wondering about what you will have the guests use to clean off their fingers.

Great idea!

I prefer option A as well… Are you leaving thumbprint size spaces for their fingers? It’s so hard to judge actual size in a picture on a website, so I’m sure you have that covered ;)

Also there are inks that are clear on fingers but leave color on paper… Maybe you’d want to check into something like that?

Poodle, this is freakin awesome….I can’t believe your skills on Illustrator! I love that you spelled your names in the branches…that is so ridiculously cool!
