I like reading wedding blogs, Photoshopping wedding design mock ups, making lists, and planning, planning, planning! I’m a bit of an anomaly, on one side I’m a very girlie girl, I collect shoes, I lay out my outfits 4-6 weeks in advance, and I’d never leave the house without my hair curled and makeup on. But on the other side, I’m a total tomboy, I love to go camping and hiking, play drinking games (hey, I’m Irish!) and most of my closest friends are guys. My fiancé and I are planning a DIY-focused wedding with a balance between easygoing (what he wants) and chic and stylish (what I want), and are tying it all together with elements in lavender, sage, butter cream and chocolate.

Why It’s Hard To Keep My Ring Clean

December 28th, 2009 @ 5:23 pm by Mrs. Cola

My engagement ring is nearly always not at its sparkliest. I try to clean it at least once a week with a soft brush and cleaning solution, but I have these little pests in my house that keep dirtying it up:

Why It's Hard To Keep My Ring Clean : wedding rings Img 46603 Why It's Hard To Keep My Ring Clean : wedding rings Img 46403 Nearly every time one of my kitties come to sit on me, they get obsessed with biting at or licking my ring! It’s just so pretty, and I know it’s hard to resist, but it’s starting to get really annoying!

I bought this ultrasonic jewelry cleaner a while ago… but as you can see, I haven’t even taken it out of its box yet. After purchasing it I read that sometimes they can make your pave stones fall out, so I’m a little reluctant to try it.

Why It's Hard To Keep My Ring Clean : wedding rings Img 486 Instead I just use this cleaner that I got free from the jeweler who we bought our rings from. It seems to work pretty well, but I’m not sure what I’ll do when I run out of it.

Why It's Hard To Keep My Ring Clean : wedding rings Img 487 I know I can’t be the only one with crazy pets who want to eat engagement rings. Does anyone have any tips on how to get them to stop obsessing? And how do you keep your rings shiny and new looking?

Amazing. Your kitty gets major props from Scissor Cat. (Plus Mr. S and I. I just showed-ed him. :p )

My cat also chews on my ring! I totally thought she was just a freakish mutant, but I guess it’s normal animal behavior. In regards to cleaning my ring - the jewelry store gave me this (free) plastic jar of cleaning solution that comes with a brush, and told me that if I ever run out, I can just come in for more. I bet your jeweler would give you more cleaning stuff for free - it’s in their interest to keep your ring looking awesome, so you can drum up business for them when people ask where you got your phenomenal ring.

Since I can’t edit, I’ll add - The cleaner looks like this - http://www.amazon.com/Connoisseurs-Jewelry-Cleaner/dp/B000OVPC8K - but with the store’s logo on it. And unlike the reviewers on Amazon, I’ve never had it leak.

Ha! That is a fantastic photo of your cat eating your ring! My mom just soaks her jewelry in straight-up ammonia and uses a little brushy thing and her stuff is always SUPER sparkly. Personally, I’m too lazy. But I recommend ammonia :)

I hear windex works really well. Just use a brush & windex and run through water to keep the ring sparkly. I think if you clean it often enough, you don’t even need any chemicals, just water & brush.

My jeweler also has unlimited free cleaner, but I hardly use it.

Windex. In a shot glass. I am sooo classy. My cat has no interest in mine. She likes my hair more.

P.S. I think you might need to take some kitty-chewing-ring videos.

I’m still using the bottle from our jeweler and I’ve often wondered the same thing. I second Miss GP, my mom has always soaked hers in ammonia, I may do the same down the road.

all the ladies in my family & fiances family swear by using toothpaste & a soft tooth brush! this little trick I have myself been doing since I got my first real bling at a very young age! Ive even been told be several jewelers that this is what they use &/or recommend!

to keep your ring sparkly… use 3 parts ammonia based cleaner (the stronger the ammonia content the better) and 1 part warm water. drop your ring into the solution and swish it around for no longer than 3 minutes. take it out, dip an old toothbrush into the solution and brush away any remaining particles. rinse ring with warm water for about 30 seconds to a minute to make sure all the ammonia is gone.

to keep your cats from licking your ring… my friend’s cat used to do that with hers. she just turned it around to where the rock was in her palm. another trick i’ve heard of is to paint some type of liquid bandage on your ring finger. johnson & johnson liquid band-aids work well. after a few times of licking that stuff, they’ll learn THAT finger is yucky and will consider it off limits.

HTH! :-)

Ok Im glad I saw this post - my jeweler didnt give me anything! I mean I can take it there anytime I want to get it cleaned and its only about 5 mins away but doing it at home would save me the hassle! I never realize how un-sparkly it gets until it is cleaned and Im always so amazed!!!

My pup loves to lick my ring too! I think secretly she wants some bling of her own :). I use Joy dish detergent and a baby soft toothbrush to get my ring back to sparkly. My friend’s jeweler actually told her that’s what they do to prep rings for their cleaning machines and I must tell you WOWZERS! Everytime I use this I fall back into that can’t stop staring at my finger phase :)

Hahaha! Your cat is so cute! I better not show my cat that ring-biting picture - I don’t want her to get inspired ;)
