Mrs. Nachos's Picture
Mrs. Nachos, Chicago/St. Thomas Age and Occupation: 33, Commercial Real Estate & Hairstylist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 36, Radio Producer Engagement Date: May 22, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2010 Venue: Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort, St. Thomas About Me: I'm a happy, laid back city girl that can find the silver lining in any situation. An optimist at heart, my motto is to turn your "what ifs?" into "so whats!". My fiance is a radio producer and the biggest Cubs fan you'll meet - our apartment decor definitely shows it. He and I grew up next door to each other and because of it, we have the best home videos and easiest holiday dinners. We are planning an intimate wedding in the Virgin Islands and a cocktail party in June for 150 of our closest friends.
About Mrs. Nachos

I mentioned before that at our home party venue, we pretty much have free reign over how much or how little we want to decorate. At first, I figured a few strand of white Christmas lights out on the patio would be my contribution. Then I started thinking about making it more ‘us’. And just then as I was trying to think of ways to spruce the venue up a bit, I got a sign. As a featured classified, this popped up…

See that last one? Teardrop acrylic crystals. Hmm, I could definitely use those on some sort of centerpiece. I quickly emailed the person selling them and she gave me a picture…

… and I was sold. I made my first Weddingbee Classifieds purchase! Now I have a bag of teardrop crystals sitting on my kitchen table and I have to figure out what to make with them. I sent an email to our venue and asked how many tables there will be in the dining room. And I almost had a heart attack. She said that with half the dining room and a portion of the patio, there would be 13 tables. (INSERT SCREECHING HALT SOUND…)

Hold the phone. Half of the dining room??? We were under the impression that we were getting the whole dining room. I immediately emailed her back and told her I thought we were getting the whole thing and she quickly corrected herself and apologized profusely for making my heart stop. Ahh, I could breathe again! So with that cleared up, she told me we’d be looking at approximately:

  • 15 tables indoors
  • 5 tables on the patio
  • 4 booths
  • 1 buffet table

Total= 25 tables

That’s a lot of centerpieces to be made. Now I have to find an inexpensive way to put together cute centerpieces and incorporate the crystals. Our only restrictions are no loose glitter/confetti, and candles need to be in some sort of votive. I’m getting my inspiration from photos like these…

I still think it’s funny but very much me that I was inspired to start a project based on beads. And I really have no idea what the centerpieces are going to end up looking like since I haven’t actually gone out and looked for other materials to use. Hopefully my next trip to Hobby Lobby or Michaels will be productive and help me figure it out!

Do you have any ideas as to how to incorporate these crystals into DIY centerpieces?

i can’t wait to see what you do with them–your inspiration photos are a great start! if it were me, i would probably just tape them to my face because that’s about as creative as i get.

I like the idea of using the crystals with more natiral elements, like branches.

I really like the first picture with the flowers & branches. Maybe a combo? I know that you can get small-ish branches of flowers from Michael’s for pretty cheap. Just a suggestion!

I love the ones with the crystals strung where it almost looks like rain. (So, particularly the third one from the bottom). All beautiful inspiration pictures, though! :)

Ohmahgah! I can’t believe that you found those, what a lovely deal too!!!! I have been looking all over the place for those kind of crystals for our wish tree…I’m super jealous! I second Scissors…I like when they are hung simply, kind of like raindrops! Especially if you hang them from branches of some sort…so pretty!

LOVE the first inspiration photo! And I’m on board with the others in thinking I like the raindrop look a lot better than the strands look. Are you going to have candles in the centerpieces so the crystals have little lights to reflect?! It’s gonna be prettttyyyyy :)

can you use fishing line perhaps to hang them? I LOVE the hanging votive and crystal look you have in one of your pics.

@Miss Pug: You make me giggle!

@Miss Guinea Pig: Hmmm, I smell a follow-up post coming :)

@mander411: I think I’ll definitely use fishing line, I like the thought of them dangling from something clear.

I love the hanging crystals look - my sister adorned her dogwood branch centerpieces with crystals and it looked great!
