Fitness for the Couch Potato

December 29th, 2009 @ 10:15 am by Mrs. Pug

I wrote last time about my descent into complete non-exercise and unfit-ness. I wanted to get back in shape, but without paying for a gym or leaving my apartment. I had just changed jobs to a much lower salary, and didn’t want to budget for a gym membership.

Enter the world of home exercise DVDs. I had to pick something quiet, though, as not to disturb my neighbors (dammit, when will I get a free-standing house?). Yoga seemed like a great choice, especially since I had liked doing it before the big downward spiral.

So, these are the DVDs that I purchased to get myself back in the game:

Kundalini Yoga for Beginners & Beyond

I don’t really know what Kundalini yoga is, but this DVD is great for the beginner, someone getting back into yoga and wanting something gentle, or even for an intermediate/experienced person who wants to have a more easygoing workout once in a while. The first part of the DVD is mostly in a seated position and works on loosening up the core and back, which also helps work your muscles as well. The second part of the DVD is a bit more advanced, with the tabletop position (basically a crab pose), double leg lifts (basically stomach workouts), downward dogs and upward dogs, and some serious back/flexibility/strength exercises. The DVD is about 45-60 minutes but I skip some exercises and interminable meditations so that it’s about 30 minutes.

(be ready to see very skinny girl doing yoga in what amounts to big panties)

Crunch Yoga with Sarah Ivanhoe

This is also a good beginner DVD, with two 30-minute programs. The first is mostly standing poses, like downward facing dog, lunges, warrior two, and other exercises. It doesn’t make you go through the sun salutations, but rather picks out poses from the sun salutation sequence and focuses on each one. It has some great twisting poses, but nothing too hardcore. The second is a similar difficulty level, with a simple flowing sequence that’s good for beginners.

Power Yoga with Rodney Yee

This is one of my favorites, and is advanced beginner/intermediate. You go through the sun salutations at a reasonable pace (and it includes poses such as triangle, warrior 1, 2 and 3, half moon pose, and others) and then move on to back exercises, core exercises, twisting and stretching. Good stuff. It is about 1 hour long (sometimes I just do the sun salutations and call it a day).

(yup, practically nekkid)

Yoga Shakti with Shiva Rea

This is definitely more intense. Some of the exercises are intermediate/advanced intermediate, others just rocket to advanced (like, “Sit cross-legged. Now put the tips of your index fingers on the floor in front of you and elevate your entire body.”). There are a ton of short sequences on this DVD, and you can either do them all in a row or pick and choose. I have only explored half of them, as many are way too advanced for me. Nevertheless, there are enough doable exercises that it’s worth it. Since the sequences are short, I can do anywhere from 15 minutes to 1 hour.

My main mantra in getting back into the swing of things was to take it easy and not put too much pressure on myself. I told myself that if I could do just 30 minutes, 3 times a week, I would be satisfied because that’s a lot more than what I was doing. Have I followed this? Not exactly. But I’m not going to beat myself up about it, either.

Do you have any recommendations for good home workout DVDs?

Good for you! I, too, am using yoga (exclusively… I loaaaaathe cardio) to get in “wedding dress shape”. I actually go to a studio, though, mostly because if I dont have someone telling me to do it, I wont do it. This girl is LAZY! :)

I don’t have any recs bc I SUCK at yoga! I’ve tried so many times to get into it and every time, I just fail. Props to you for getting into it!

I love yoga, I go to an Anusara yoga studio and its awesome because it calms me down and works my ody.
I know a lot of other bees will probably say this but 30 day shred is a pretty good workout DVD and I’ve had some fun with Turbo Jam.

I haven’t used a work out video since MTV’s Grind (I know), but I kind of like the Wii Fit’s yoga stuff.

For real yoga, bikram kicks my butt so hard. And it’s so gross..

I like the quieter stuff, too. I’ve been doing 10 min solution pilates. It comes with a rubber band for tension and you can pick which area you want to zone in on. I really like it! I’m going to try some of the Yoga video’s you suggested with it.

I have The Crunch Fat-Burning Pilates DVD that I really like. It incorporates standing Pilates work to give you a cardio aspect (and lots of step-touch), but there’s no jumping/flailing around so you won’t wake up the neighbors that live below. And if you want more of an arm workout, I add 1.5 lb wrist weights for some added definition benefits.

My neighbors probably hate me because I do Go Go Robics. The DVD’s teach you a cute dance routine and I try to stay on my mat and wear quiet shoes.
Netflix doesn’t have a ton of workout DVDs but if you have a way to stream instant to your TV, it’s a nice way to try out new workouts.

I love all the jillian michaels ones, I also tried another kundalini yoga one - but I hated it! I’m glad you’ve found ones that work for you though. If you’ve taken ballet, you might also like the NYC ballet workouts.

I’ve never done yoga at home, but I might check out some of these videos! I usually just do the Shred or something like that, but I mute Jillian b/c her voice is uber annoying to me.

@ChiDIY: woohoo! another yoga bride!

@DollyLava: that’s a great idea, i may have to try that

@Goldilocks1107: oh i was wondering about that one–thanks for the rec!

@cmlmay10: i hope you try some of them! keep in mind that the kundalini is uber basic, so don’t expect a sweaty workout!

@Miss Trail Mix: i could say the same thing about me and running!

Hmm, I think I’ll get the crunch yoga and the power yoga. I too need to get my lazy rear in gear!
@Miss French Fries: LMAO!!! Totally something I would do. There’s this commercial that comes on and the spokesperson has the most OBNOXIOUS voice, so I pause it for a few minutes, just so I can fastforward through it! LOL

I have the one with Rodney Yee!! It’s the only fitness DVD that I’ve actually wanted to do more than once.

I do Rodney Yee’s Yoga for the Core now, and it’s easier for me to finish than Power Yoga. I’m not so flexible. ;)

Rodney Yee is the best! Not too bad to look at, either.

I used Netflix watch instantly to stream random workout videos before I joined a gym (which I haven’t been to in 2 weeks, ugh). I’m impressed you can motivate yourself to actually use them! I usually just feel good that I added them to the queue but can never actually workout to them!

i’ve done the jillian michaels 30-day crunch - i’m definitely at the beginner level (or nearly there at least), but it’s awesome that it’s literally only a 20 minute work-out. you definitely work up a sweat though!

I LOVE all of Sara Ivanhoe’s workouts! She’s my favorite of the yoga DVD instructors. I think she strikes a great balance between zen and challenging in her workouts.
