Mrs. Spaniel's Picture
Mrs. Spaniel, Los Angeles Age and Occupation: 28, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Psychologist Wedding Date: March 2010 Venue: Calamigos Ranch About Me: I'm a third-year law student trying to balance graduating with starting my career, keeping up a relationship, and, oh yeah, planning an Old World, multi-cultural, "mountain lodge" wedding for 180 guests! A South Asian Jewish girl getting ready to marry my handsome Catholic Dane, I'm hoping to blend our cultures in our wedding just a bit more gently than by providing samosas as appetizers and offering æbleskiver for dessert. (Although that would also be awesome.)

Floral Oversight

December 29th, 2009 @ 3:17 pm by Mrs. Spaniel

When Mr. Spaniel and I found our venue online, the pictures looked like this:

When we visited for the first time, and later with our parents, the ceremony site looked like this:

It’s one of the reasons we chose Calamigos Ranch: it is practically already done, and we didn’t want to spend much on flowers and decor. With the greenery across the wooden structure and the little white lights that will be lit at our sunset wedding, it felt done already.

But when we went for our details meeting, the ceremony site looked like this.

(personal photo)

Apparently the greenery is the work of a florist, and not part of the venue. I don’t think that the lack of it looks bad, per se, but it looks dormant—not the look we’re going for in our early spring wedding.

We’re not working with a traditional florist (I happily handed that job to a freelance florist I found on Craigslist who is making all of the personal flowers for less than it would have cost me to buy the flowers in bulk and all the supplies I would have needed), and she doesn’t do installations like this. I don’t think it would be appropriate to ask anyone we know to get up on a ladder right before the wedding to do this either, even assuming we can find the right kind of plants. Not to mention, we really don’t want to spend any more on throwaways or strictly aesthetic items.

So, do we find another florist to take care of the ceremony decor, going over budget (there’s nowhere left to take it from!), or do we make do with the unadorned wood and twigs?

Or, is there a third option that I’m not seeing?

What if you draped fabric around it? It would probably be a lot cheaper and easier to do!!

I like Mouse’s idea of some draped fabric! I honestly think it looks better without the green-ness….it kind of looks overgrown from the picture. You can’t go wrong, its a gorgeous site!

Maybe some tulle bunting? Perhaps in combination with silk flowers and/or ivy?

I like it better without the greenery too! Fabric would be an excellent option, and as teaadntoast said, maybe add some silk flowers and ivy to the fabric to drape it across the top?

Mrs Mouse stole my idea. I was definitely going to say fabric. Or what about stringing fake flowers beforehand, didn’t Mrs. Quiche do something like that?

What time of day is your wedding? If it was close to evening and the sun was starting to set, white (Christmas) lights wrapped around it may be a nice touch…

Yep, @Cole B: , you’re right! Miss S, I made “floating” flower petal garland & hung it from our otherwise plain altar. It was also draped in white, flowy fabric. Here is the post with the picture: http://www.weddingbee.com/2009/08/06/ya-mon-the-ceremony-begins/ & also a link to the ridiculously easy DIY post is in the first paragraph. Good luck!!

Fabric is a great idea. To save money consider using drapery valence scarves. I used fabric at my wedding to define spaces within the large ballroom where we had our reception. I suffered major sticker shock at the fabric store. When you actually measure out the amount of fabric needed to drape large spaces it comes out to quite a bit. We ended up using drapery valence scarves from JC Penny (on sale and using one of their many coupons) and paid less per yard than the cheapest fabric at Joannes. And the added bonus was the edges were already finished so we saved time on the sewing.

fabric would be nice, but honestly i think it looks quite lovely as it is. it’s hard, though, when you’ve been imagining it with that greenery, and something extra never hurt! let us know what you decide.

Beautiful site. I love the fabric idea, but what about hanging candles or paper cranes…? Then again, you don’t really have to mess with perfection- it’s really beautiful as is.

I agree with the others that have suggested fabric — it would look gorgeous (and be easy!).

What if you got some ribbon? or fabric that you cut down in strips? i’m picturing some kind of a weaved look that works with the twigs, and also putting lights around. I feel llike this could wofk if you practiced at home first..

Ikea has some inexpensive mesh curtains ( I think 3 bucks for a 2 pack) that are super wide and long that are a non-fray fabric and would look awesome draped around. They can be cut in length or in width to give you more fabric to swag. that and a few large blossom silk flowers and I think it would look great.

I’m curious who your freelance florist is. I’m in LA too and I was going to just DIY any and all flowers, but if she’s really that inexpensive I might be willing to hand over the work.

Gorgeous location. For some reason I love the sort-of wild bushy look, but I know that’s not what you’re going for. :) I think the fabric option could work really well.

if you made garlands of silk flowers and lights it could be awesome. dollar store flowers and hot glue look great when illuminated!

I have to think more about the fabric idea… I am sure it will look nice, but we did want to keep the sort of woodsy, natural feel there and I’m not sure that won’t take away from it.

@FallFlowers: The ceremony will start right before sunset, and luckily there are already white Christmas lights up, so we won’t need to add that. :)

@BrianneG: I’ll PM you her info later today. :)

@Miss Scissors: I love the wild busy look! I’m just trying to decide if it’s worth the extra money for the mossy coverings.
