Hair and Makeup Trial I: A Kind of Fail

December 29th, 2009 @ 2:34 pm by Mrs. Pug

In looking for a hair and makeup artist (”MUA”), I had to find someone close enough to Half Moon Bay so that the travel fee didn’t equal the cost of a kidney (which I assume is pricey).

The first place where I had a trial was very close to our venue. After my trial, I had that kind of experience where at first you’re okay with it (b/c you really want it to be okay), and then the more you think about it the more problems you realize there were, and then after a while you’ve worked yourself into a frenzy where you’re on the phone with your mom shouting, “No good! No good!”

Look at the bun she made. It’s an okay bun, but… just a bun.

The colors she used for my makeup were nice, but she also caked on enough concealer and foundation that if I touched my face it looked like I was breaking ground to dig the Suez canal.

Now, this wasn’t a terrible trial by any means, but it just didn’t feel right, you know? Plus, when hearing about the experiences of other brides , I started to fantasize that not only would my hair/MUA do a great job, but s/he would also be a lovely person to have around the morning of the wedding. I think the getting ready time should be happy and relaxed, and since the hair/MUA will be there for most of it, s/he will have a big part in that dynamic.

Before the trial, I had debated whether or not to even get a trial because of the money. However, after hearing from several people that a trial was one thing they wished they had done, I went for it. And it was worth it. Anything to avoid a minor meltdown the morning of is worth a lotta money. To me. I realize not everybody considers this a priority.

Lesson learned: Get a trial if you can and trust your gut instincts.

Let’s hear any nightmare stories from hair/makeup trials!

Oh man, this makes me nervous - I’m signing with a makeup/hair artist team to do our beautifying and I’m not going to be able to do a trial until about a month before the wedding, at which point it will be too late to find anyone else! Aghhh!! I’m very glad you decided to do a trial that left you enough time to make a better suited choice for you! :)

Hair and makeup makes me SO nervous - I had my hair done for a cello recital a few months ago and absolutely hated it, but there was no time to fix it and I’m not good at being confrontational/standing up for myself in those situations. I will definitely schedule a few trials!

I have not signed with the artist yet, but I hear great reviews. The only thing that scares me is a couple of reviews that I have read stating she was late on the day of the wedding, but she did a hell of a job on hair and makeup. My WP recommended her, and also used her for her own wedding (I saw pics, and she did an hell of a job). I’m going to put it in my WP’s hands, and semi-lecture my artist during my trial in terms of being punctual on the wedding day. You look beautiful by the way. Good luck!

I’ve booked myself and my girls at a salon near the venue. I’m planning on doing a trial, but since I’ve never been to this salon before (ever. I’ll need to google it to find it) I’m thinking I might also make an appointment to get my next haircut there. Just to scope it out.

Agreed. Your hair and make-up look pretty, but not extra-special. Looks like something you could do yourself, even! I hope your next trial blows you away!

I’m planning on using my normal hair stylist. Hopefully everything works out.

I REALLY need to schedule one of these!! I’m like you, I need to not stress about it day of, so a trial is worth it for me.

I think your makeup looks amazing! And I understand your concern about the hair. It does look absolutely beautiful and very classy, but it also looks like you are going to pose for a Ralph Lauren add. Like your wedding is at your parents yacht club and everyone is wearing bowties and pants with little animals stiched onto them (no offense to anyone getting married at a yc).

That is the delimenna I face, my dress calls for a more sophisticated updo, but I don’t like that style on me. So I am probably going to go for several trials, to both pick a hairstylist and a hairstyle!

@Miss Guinea Pig: i’m sure you selected the hair/makeup team based on good information and research, so you will be totally fine (and gorgeous!). and a month is totally enough time to tweak and feel comfortable with everything.

@Cole B: if you have that comfort level already with your hairstylist, you’re ahead of the game!

@peachesandtulips: @dsuhornets: @Goldilocks1107: @Miss Frozen Yogurt: good luck with the trials!

for anyone else: don’t worry, the world won’t fall apart if you don’t get a trial.

I need to schedule my hair/makeup trial. I’ve also debated as to whether they’re worth the money or not, so it’s good to hear someone reassure me that it is worth it. :)

Altho clearly not everyone needs/wants a trial, I’m glad that you did as she-who-shall-not-be-mentioned made you look a little like a kabuki actor.

And why are there no pics from your other (admittedly, ‘failed’ trial) — the one done by your incredible but apparently not beautician-gifted sister?

I really, really need to start researching hair peeps in my area so that I don’t end up with a lame-o. :( I’m probably on the bun-track as well, but like you, I don’t want a “meh” bun. This wedding stuff is hard! :)

I’m doing a trial with my friend in a few weeks and I’m excited! I don’t think I’d trust someone with my makeup though, I’ll be doing my own for that.

You’re gorgeous, and don’t need all that crazy spackling. Trust me, you’ll find someone better who can use makeup to enhance your natural good looks. Perhaps someone who uses airbrushing? Your skin’s lovely and doesn’t need a caked on foundation.

I totally agree that you and your MUA should click personality/dynamic wise - good luck on your search and keep us posted!
