About Mrs. French Fries

New Year, New Resolutions.

December 29th, 2009 @ 1:07 pm by Mrs. French Fries

One of the most common New Year’s resolutions is to lose weight. Every January, people from coast to coast join their local Bally’s and proceed to work out like maniacs, likely burning out before the New Year’s Eve confetti has been swept off the floor.

I will admit that I am ushering in a new year and also a resolution that is weight-related. Facing a walk down the aisle in a curve-hugging gown, and a 9-day honeymoon where I will most likely need to don a swimming suit are huge motivators.

I don’t necessarily want to lose a ton of weight, but I do want to look amazing in my dress and in that swimming suit. I do want to work out more often, but I abhor going to the gym, and winter in Wisconsin makes going for walks/running outside kind of tricky. I’m initially going to focus on something that is much, much easier to control (and requires much less willpower for me than getting my booty off of the couch). Baby steps, people!

My 2010 resolution is this: From January 1, 2010 until the day after my wedding, I will not eat fast food of any type. This includes any type of establishment where if you were going to order a food item, you would need to approach a counter to order it. Obviously, places like McDonald’s and Taco Bell are out (adios, Chalupas). Places like Noodles and Chipotle (two of my faves) are also out. Also, calling for pizza (or ordering it online) is verboten.

I don’t think that making this change is going to make me suddenly look like a supermodel, but I do think that it’s a healthy thing to do for my body (and it can’t hurt my waistline). Too often, Mr. FF and I turn to fast food out of laziness (especially on the weekends). Starting January 1, that laziness is going to have to take a hike – I have a resolution to uphold!

Mr. French Fries thinks that once Shamrock Shakes hit McD’s in late February/early March, I’m a goner. Luckily, that is close to when I will be starting my dress fittings, so hopefully that will provide some focus. Time will tell, but I will keep everyone updated!

Are you making any resolutions in 2010 that are wedding-related?

That’s a very good, reasonable goal! My goal is to get back into the routine of working out a few times a week. I don’t think it should be too hard–just a matter of getting started!

Good for you for making a resolution so you look fantastic in your dress! :) I’m not making any resolutions this year, but I usually don’t.

awww French Fries you are swearing off French Fries? *sad face* I am sure you’ll do fine- I think I might try something similar- although I have vowed to not try any type of “lose weight before the wedding” projects.

I make this vow every week. Considering I put on three pounds in a week from eating my FMIL’s christmas goodies, I know I really need to stick to it this time. And actually go to the gym again.

Yes! Like you I’m thinking that the added pressure of a wedding and a tropical honeymoon may give me the motivation to actually make my New Year’s resolution stick. I am resolving two things: 1) come January 1st, no more soda and 2) do my Jillian Michaels work-out tape at least 3 times a week.

Good luck to you!

Ringing in 2008 brought me to a weight-loss resolution. For the first time ever, I stuck with it and I lost 60 lbs over the course of about 6 months. I’ve since kept it off - for the most part. I fluctuate a bit.
I was working out religiously. I’ve since gotten a little lazy with my workouts. My goals is to kick my workouts into high gear and return to doing the dreaded weights. I have 10 months to get back into peak physical condition before I gallop down the aisle. And, like you, I fully intend to spend my honeymoon in little more than a bikini.

Taco Bell does have the Fresco menu now. So, if for some reason you can’t make it home to a healthy meal, that is an option. Also, Subway has some great low fat/low cal choices.

Good luck. My weight-loss motto: nothing tastes as good as being thin (looking like a million bucks in your wedding dress/swimsuit) feels. YOU CAN DO IT!

French Fries with no french fries… WHAT?! It sounds like you’re making a very reasonable resolution! The Rainbow’s resolution is to stick to our excel budget spreadsheet, start working out again and get back in shape so we can be all sexified for the wedding, lol. :D

I made the same resolution yesterday! Although I don’t have a 2010 wedding to aim for, I’m trying to go as long as I possibly can without fast food. It’s been less than 24 hours and I’m already being tortured by commercials showing me Wendy’s now has spicy chicken nuggets :(

I agree with Miss Pug - I’ve never heard of Shamrock shakes, and now I want one! Excellent resolution - we’ve been trying to cut back on junk food but the holidays have pretty much submarined that attempt :(

@Mrs. Mouse: Getting started is the hardest part!

@Jessie516: I usually don’t make resolutions…so we’ll se how this goes!

@Miss Pretzel: Yes, ’tis true. No more french fries for this Fry Gal!

@BrianneG: Um, I ate way too many Christmas goodies, too!

@Lizzle101010: Good luck to you, too! :)

@Miss Pug: Shamrock shakes basically are just mint milkshakes that are tinted green for St. Patrick’s day. They’re. so. good.

@10.10.10: WAY TO GO! :) YOu should be so proud of sticking to your goals. That’s a great motto, too. Maybe I should tape that to my laptop screen…and my refrigerator… ;)

@Miss Rainbow: I know, I know. No more french fries (sadly!). Maybe they can change my moniker to Miss Carrot Stick? (somehow, it doesn’t have the same appeal.)

@MissDoodles: Ugh, I know what you mean! There’s something so delicious about food in nugget form!

@Miss Guinea Pig: Like I said to @Miss Pug:, they’re basically mint milkshakes. Simple, but so, so good!

I went to the gym today for the first time since Thanksgiving (bad weather, out of town, etc) I’m so afraid to be at the gym next week because I know it will be crazy! I think cutting out ff is such a good idea (I blew 90 minutes of cardio last night with a trip to Hardees). What about Subway/Sandwhich shops?

I barely ever eat fast food. When I do, I’m always like “holy cow this is yummy!” It’s to the point where I barely remember what fast food tastes like! I don’t miss it at all. It makes me feel icky. My FI has to sneak fast food when I’m not with him, because I never agree to eat it unless we are on a road-trip. I bet you won’t miss it after a few weeks. I love cooking at home, it makes me more active and forces me to eat healthier. Plus, I have found that it is much cheaper to plan out your meals for the week, go buy groceries and use them so they don’t go to waste. In the summer, I buy all my veggies from my local farmers market that I live across the street from (very convenient). That way I support my local economy, eat organic foods, and save money (produce at the farmers market is way cheap!) Good luck with your goal, it is very attainable.

Oh, if you do want to work out more my advice would be to find the one that is the absolute closest to your home. I go to the YMCA by our place because it is only 3 blocks away. I just walk there. It makes it harder to find excuses not to go when it is only a stroll away!

Kudos to you on making a reasonable goal! I think its pretty realistic! But gosh…Chipotle? Nooo I would never be able to give that up if I lived by one…so yummy!

Good luck with this! Oh, and random thought, but have you seen the book “Eat This Not That?” It gives you good ideas for what food to swap out with what you regularly eat…the guy who wrote it is always visiting talk shows and amazing me with the info (something crazy, like drinking a choc PB coldstone milkshake has the same saturated fat equivalent as eating over 100 Oreos…holy crap!)!

My goal is to lose 10 pounds before the wedding, which seems manageable. I’ve been working out like crazy training for the half marathon, but I haven’t lost an ounce! I see the difference in my body though, but I’m not bikini-ready yet.

My fitness goal is to run two half marathons before the summer, and get in the 9 races this year to get qualified for the 2011 NYC Marathon. Woooo!

Looks like a great start! I find small dietary changes can sometimes make huge impacts, and if fast food is a regular thing for you, this will make a big difference. :) Good luck!

I like it when people set reasonable goals, it’s a good place to start. My resolution is to cook more at home and work out so I can tone up, I’m really worried about my arms looking like crap on my wedding day.

I personally and not making resolutions, just cutting out sweets (my weakness), and eating more whole grains and making healthier choices. I simply can’t afford a gym membership, and really do not think I would go even if I could. I plan on utilizing my Fit TV subscription on cable tv, and walking daily.
