(Although that would also be awesome.)

Accessorizing on the Cheap

December 30th, 2009 @ 2:13 pm by Mrs. Spaniel

I didn’t feel much of a need to splurge on accessories—they were either going to be gifts from family members (a South Asian custom), or bought on the cheap.

I wasn’t sure what Papa Spaniel would come back home with from his trip to Pakistan (if anything), so I made sure to have some back-ups on hand. First were the earrings. I knew I wanted something big, gold, and kind of over the top, so I picked up these from Bluefly.

Cost to me: FREE, with a gift certificate I won to Bluefly from Weddingbee over the summer!

I didn’t want to wear a necklace with my strapless, straight-across dress, but I definitely wanted some bangles, and I happened to find these on sale at Gilt a few months ago.

Cost to me: $36, and I’ve already got a ton of use out of them.

Since I’m not buying any other pieces, my total jewelry cost is $36. I wasn’t expecting to spend much, but that’s even better than I’d hoped. :)

I might as well tell you about my shoes, while I’m at it. I found these on sale at Nine West before I’d actually bought my dress, but I waited on them until after the purchase was made… and then they were no longer available in the store. But I knew I had to have them, because they were the most comfortable heels I’ve tried on in a long time! Luckily I could still find them on the website for a little while longer!

Cost to me: approximately $40, and I will definitely wear these again after the wedding.

So if we’re counting, that means that all of my accessories (the ones above, plus my veil which is borrowed, my purse which was $78, and my hair comb which was $72) cost me a grand total of $226. I could definitely have skipped the clutch and spent less, but I think it wasn’t too bad… it leaves me with $750 for alterations, hair and makeup before I hit my budget. So unless I gain or lose a lot of weight quickly, I think I’m good! :)

Did you find any great deals on your accessories?

First of all, congrats for knowing your budget. I kinda skipped all the calculations and went for ‘as cheap as possible’

Here are the figures:
Dress: $250 at Cargo Largo (amazing find!)
Shoes: $0 vintage thrift store find, gift from my sis - cute blue satin with sparkly buttons sewn on by me ($5 for buttons)
Veil & Hair flower: made by me
Jewelry: $0 gift from my finacee - first Christmas we spent together so I already had it.
Purse: none
Alterations & Custom made jacket: $400
Makeup: thanks, sis
Hair: $500 value for myself and 4-5 others in the wedding party. We were able to do this on trade thanks to my finacee’s limo company.

This is the first time I’m actually adding it up, so I guess the total would be $1155, not bad!

I wish I could upload a couple of choice photos from the accessories I’ve described, but here is a link to a blog post of our photos instead & you can see how everything turned out!

@MeadowbelleMarket: I also went for as cheap as possible, while still making sure I got what I wanted. :) I had to set an upper limit, though, because I can always think of something else to buy! :(

@Mrs. Mouse: I hope so!!

@Miss Guinea Pig: They are SO beautiful… but SO HEAVY! There’s a chance I may have to switch them out after the ceremony/pictures for some studs so they don’t rip through my whole ear. :(

I tried to go with “cheap but classy” :-)
Shoes: $30 (on sale)
Clutch: $15 (on sale)
Jewelry: $30 (earrings and necklace, and . . . you guessed it, on sale)
Veil: $20 (ebay)

I’m still deciding if I want to go with some colorful shoes (mine are a rosy/gold/metallic color, but I really want purple). I think that will be determined by my ability to find a pair with a 1.5-2″ heel.

They have some kind of earring backs that make it easier to wear heavy earrings. I don’t remember what they’re called but maybe someone else will know!
Your jewelry is awesome!

I just wanted to say that Nine West shoes are super comfortable. I have many high heeled pairs, and I can spend a whole teaching day in them without worries. Great choice!

@Cole B: Thank you! They are one of my favorite pieces of jewelry (after my engagement and wedding rings!), but I can only get by with them in for a few hours :(

@Goldilocks1107: Awesome deals!!

@ATbride: DAMN… and I thought mine were cheap. :)

@April.H: I will definitely try to find them!

@Miss Guinea Pig: I hope I was just imagining it… but I wore them to a holiday party and I definitely noticed them dragging a LOT.

@Miss Pudding: I was never able to teach in heels, but all of my Nine Wests are definitely in the most comfortable heels category!

@Miss Pug: I know! I totally didn’t believe it at first. ;)

@Ms Potato Chips: I think that’s my favorite part. ;) And except for the shoes, they’re even pre-wearable (I don’t want the shoes to look worn ;) ).
