Mrs. Spaniel's Picture
Mrs. Spaniel, Los Angeles Age and Occupation: 28, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Psychologist Wedding Date: March 2010 Venue: Calamigos Ranch About Me: I'm a third-year law student trying to balance graduating with starting my career, keeping up a relationship, and, oh yeah, planning an Old World, multi-cultural, "mountain lodge" wedding for 180 guests! A South Asian Jewish girl getting ready to marry my handsome Catholic Dane, I'm hoping to blend our cultures in our wedding just a bit more gently than by providing samosas as appetizers and offering æbleskiver for dessert. (Although that would also be awesome.)

Remembering

Have you ever heard of the Japanese tradition where a bride who folds a thousand origami cranes before her wedding ensures a prosperous and happy marriage? There’s no way I’ll have time to fold a thousand cranes before March (remember that law school thing?), but I’ve always thought this was a cute idea. But that’s not why I’d attempt it. I would attempt it because it was my aunt who taught me how to make paper cranes when I was younger, because I know this is something she would have loved to have helped us to do for the wedding, and because she won’t be able to be with us after a battle with ovarian cancer that ended two and a half years ago. I’m missing her a bit these last few weeks, and when this popped into my head, it seemed an appropriate way to remember her.

There are a million tutorials online (and some with video!), and our own Miss Scissors has detailed how she incorporated them into her own planning, so I won’t confuse you with my step-by-step. (You are spared!)

My goal is modest: maybe 25 of these, which I’ll probably make from various scrapbook papers in our wedding colors. The next step is to figure out how to display them!

Placed individually?

Or maybe little mini-cranes on the place cards?

I actually have an idea or two up my sleeve, but to maintain the suspense, I’ll have to tell it to you… later!

Did you take on any projects in honor of someone who couldn’t make it to the wedding? What are you doing to remember them?

I am honoring my grandma by being married with her wedding band, and Mr. N’s grandma wearing her earrings on our day. I think I may also hold a locket with my bouquet with pictures of my doggies (they’re still around but obviously can’t make it to St. Thomas) but I want them there in spirit. I can’t wait to see how you incorporate the cranes. I like the 1000 tradition, maybe I’ll get ambitious and try to tackle that one!

We’re going to have the wedding photos of our grandparents on display somewhere at the reception.

I love the crane tradition, it’s really beautiful.

What a wonderful and thoughtful idea! We have brides all the time looking for a special way to remember and honor a lost loved one. This definitely brings that personal element to the occasion. Can’t wait to hear how you have decided to display them!

Yours in Perfect Planning,

That’s a wonderful way to remember your aunt. I know you have ideas on how to use them, but I really love the look of them hanging in a group in the air!

Oh I love the cranes hanging from the ceiling, but that might be hard to pull off, since venues might not allow you to nail holes in their walls/ceiling! I think the individual ones on the escort cards are super cute too.

Could you hang them from that wooden arch-thingy at your ceremony site? Perhaps if you made larger ones? That could look cool.

Oh I love them on the place cards! They are so SMALL and so CUTE! And I would be amazed that they were so tiny. I don’t really have the patience to fold 1000 of anything, so I’m super impressed.

I love that idea! :-) I think it’s a great way to honor her memory as well. My grandmother & great grandmother helped my mother raise me, howver they’re both gone now. I plan on carrying pictures of them in a locket on my bouquet. Probably other ways too, but haven’t got that far yet :-)
