Shall We Talk About the Ring?

December 30th, 2009 @ 10:47 am by Mrs. Buttons

Ah yes, the ring. The tiny little bauble that so many girls dream of. Once the topic of marriage came into the conversation, I decided that we should start to “browse” through some ring options. Because, well… Mr. Buttons had an adorable, yet old fashioned idea about engagement rings (in my opinion)! When I suggested that we go shopping so that I could give him hints about what styles I liked, he was slightly confused.

“I thought the ring was supposed to be a surprise, and that I have to buy it by myself…???”

Hmmm. Albeit an incredibly romantic gesture, I knew that I would have some very specific opinions on what ring I ultimately wanted, and my desire was to point him in the right direction.

So, I asked him if he would feel comfortable walking into jewelry stores and picking something out.

“Nope.”

And this, dear hive, is how our engagement ring journey began.

Mr. Buttons and I decided to stop by one of the large International Diamond Centers in town to start our hunt. I had been looking around online and had become very fond of pave bands (I love how vintage and timeless they look), so I knew that is what I wanted to try on.

When we walked in to the store and looked into the cases, my eyes immediately honed in on one particular designer, and it was all over before it could even begin!

The Michael M collection launched in 2008, and their line is absolutely breathtaking. They focus on using a plethora of diamonds and less metal in their settings (each engagement ring mounting contains around 100 diamonds), which results in some MAJORLY blinding levels of sparkle. The rings look like they’ve been dipped in diamonds, and I had to pick my jaw up off of the glass case, because I am pretty sure it came unhinged. Don’t believe me? Take a look for yourself…

I tried on a ton of rings that day, but I kept going back to the Michael M pieces. There was one in particular that was just perfect. We didn’t leave the store with a ring that day, but Mr. Buttons now had a clear picture of what my little Button heart desired: a pave setting, and a round stone. And boy, did he ever deliver on it!

P.S. my setting is pictured above… want to take a guess as to which one it is?

Did you help pick out your ring?

I helped pick out my ring. Good thing because he’s not the best at picking out jewerly, hence being surprised with a pearl necklance that I had to wear on my wedding day. I had other jewerly picked out and purchased. Also said necklance didn’t have matching earrings so I had to scramble to find a pair. Thank God my aunt had a ton of jewelry with her.

The only help I gave was telling him that I liked princess cut the best. I think your setting is the first one!!!

I’m guessing #1 or #3!
They’re all gorgeous! My ring is like what you described, tons of diamonds, not much metal. The only metal you can see from the top are the prongs, the rest is alll sparkle, just the way I like it! ;)

I had a lot of say in my ring since Mr N let me help tweak the CAD before it was made. I’m guessing the first ring is yours?

Yes, he got me a “cracker-jack stand in ring” since he know that I would want some say in what sat on my finger forever and ever. We had talked about marriage, but he wanted to propose when I wasn’t expecting it, but he wanted something to go on my finger at the proposal. He couldn’t have done better!

Those are sooooo pretty! The sparkles are breathtaking!

I didn’t pick my ring, but Mr. Potato Head knew I preferred a colored gemstone and he had Sistah Chips and my best friend approve! Those are all so gorgeous!! I’ll guess…2!

I”m guessing 3!
I didn’t really get to pick out my ring or have much say in it other than the shape of the main stone but I really really wish that I had!

Well, I was instantly drawn to ring#3, so that’s my guess! Although any of the rings pictured above would be a dream-come-true. They are all fantastically gorgeous.

Buuuut, to answer your question: yes, yes I did help pick out my ring. In fact, I picked the setting AND diamond! Luckily for me, since I am rather picky as well, my bf liked the idea of including me in the ring process. Still waiting for it to make its way to my finger, though!!

We picked mine out together, then he had it made by a jeweler friend of ours, so it is similar but different than what we picked. I guess 1!!

FI was all about picking the ring out himself until he realize how expensive they are! Poor thing! The next thing I knew we were at Tiffany’s on 5th avenue trying on rings.. the 2nd best experience of my life (the first was obviously the proposal on the ice rink at Rockefeller Center). We tried on every style Tiffany makes and kept going back to the round brilliant solitaire. My fingers are so small and he wanted the center stone to be at least 2 carats, so sidestones and a thick band looked too junky on me. Good thing that’s what we both liked the best b/c he was able to get a great deal at Blue Nile!

My FI definitely belonged to the same train of thought your’s did, he didn’t want me to see my ring until it was on my finger.
My guess is #1 or #3

Mine was a total surprise, although he knew I loved the Tiffany Legacy pretty much from the beginning of our relationship ;). So he chose a pave halo setting which is perfect.

I think your ring is #1!

When we finally discussed marriage, he pulled out his laptop and opened his bookmarks to the Tiffany site. He had already decided that he wanted to get me a classic ring that I wouldn’t hate in 20 years, but he wanted to see how I felt about it.
I was totally on board. But, I refused to let him buy Tiffany. He went to a local jeweler and hand-selected the stone. Then, he had the jeweler build a true “Tiffany” setting (he even brought photos of every angle for them to work off of…I bet they hate him). I’m so glad he went to all of that trouble and added expense. I think my ring looks dainty and the diamond really pops.

I’ll guess #1.
