About Mrs. French Fries

The Great Cover-Up.

December 30th, 2009 @ 3:05 pm by Mrs. French Fries

We’re currently in the process of selecting linens for our wedding reception. Yes, our venue comes with standard, floor-length white linens, but those don’t really jive with our “vision”. Oh, and also? When asking Mr. French Fries what, if anything, he really wanted for the wedding (besides awesome food and an open bar), I got the following answer: “chair covers.” Yes, bees… it’s true. My fiance is actually 100% on board with the chair cover concept! One less battle for me to fight, no?

So, at the suggestion of our venue’s wedding coordinator, we contacted a local linen company and met our consultant at our venue for a consultation. I had informed her of our colors (various shades of pink and black) and she said that she would come armed with various options. When we walked into the ballroom for our meeting, we stopped dead in our tracks. The first option she had set up to show us was awesome — and we promptly decided it was what we wanted. Fuchsia satin l’amour floor length linens, Morocco black lace table toppers pinned and swagged along the sides of the tables, and black l’amour chair covers tied with organza ties (in rosettes, of course). I snagged a few pictures:

The table: (I swear it wasn’t this orangey in person. The pictures below are a little more accurate, color-wise.)

So, easy-peasy, right? Um, well… not exactly. You see, when talking with our consultant that night, she jokingly said, “I’ll email you a quote within a couple of days. When you get it, take your time and talk it over … maybe with a bottle of wine.” Ha! I laughed. Wine?! I wouldn’t need wine. Why in the world would I need wine? The quote came, and I opened it with a bit of hesitation. After all, she had said that we might need wine for this…

ZOMG, where’s the wine?

The quote was about three times what we had originally budgeted for linens. Now, there’s a little wiggle room for adjusting our budget… but increasing it that much was out of the question. I believe Mr. French Fries said, “Wait… they’re charging us how much, and we don’t even get to keep it at the end of the night?” Indeed.

The other problem with the linens as pictured above? I wouldn’t be able to make napkins anymore — they would completely clash with what we had goin’ on. I had already purchased 10 types of fabric (a sizeable investment), and really wanted to make the napkins for our wedding. Plus, I didn’t spend an afternoon with French Fry Mom, French Fry MOH, and French Fry B-maid cutting out 17″ napkin squares for my health. So, on to plan B.

Our plan as it currently stands is to use black polyester floor length linens (significantly cheaper than the l’amour), nix the lace toppers (cutting one cost completely), and to use the fabric that I’ve already purchased for our napkins. The chair covers will most likely remain the same, although I’m not completely sold on mixing organza ties with polyester linens and cloth napkins. Something about the shiny organza fabric/matte poly fabric thing bothers me.

What do you think? Do a different type of tie? Nix the ties completely? Do something else that I haven’t even thought of?

I don’t have any advice but I wanted to chime in with an “ARGH! LINENS!” Good luck!

I don’t think you need the ties! Sorry your quote was so high. You’ll have fun DIYing your napkins, anyway. :)

I don’t think you need the ties either. And, it would be such a shame to not use all those awesome napkins!! I’m glad you’re going to be able to.

I think the alternative you described sounds classy and chic black tie. I think it will be perfect just the way you make it! :o)

I met with the linen people solo, since my fiance has this job thing he has to go to, and had braced myself for exorbitant costs. My fiance, however, had not. And when I brought home their estimate, for straightforward polyester tablecloths and napkins, no overlays, no fancy fabrics, no chair covers, nothing at all fancy, his reaction was, “JESUS CHRIST!!!!” I feel your pain.

I think your plan B (or was it originally plan A?) is a superb idea. I hope you take this next part as it is intended - to make you feel good about your current decision - the pink tabelcloths kind of clash with the carpeting, so I think the black will be perfect. Very, very classy.

No worries about mixing fabrics, it wil break things up a bit without creating monotony or overload of one type.

Also, way to stick to your budget!

@Miss Spaniel: I agree with the ARGH-ing. :)

@Mrs. Mouse: @Miss Frozen Yogurt: Maybe we’ll nix the ties — people probably won’t notice, anyway.

@AzinAugust: Thank you! I was starting to go linen-crazy.

@redherring: Who knew linens could be so frustrating?

@MeadowbelleMarket: Actually, that’s one of the reservations I had with the long pink linens when I looked back at the pictures! :)

Thanks everyone for your reassurance! :)

I HATE LINENS! I just really, really, really can’t understand why they are so ridiculously expensive!

I think your plan B sounds really nice and will look really classy. While the ones they set up look really pretty they also seem a little sweet sixteen to me. Plus I’d be bummed if you didn’t use your DIY napkins!

While I like the table setup of Plan A in isolation, I agree that it completely clashes with the carpets, AND you wouldn’t get to do your awesome napkins AND it’s exorbitantly expensive! The lace overlay is pretty, but I agree with AzinAugust, the black linens will be very chic and will really show off your napkins! I don’t think you need the chair tie either, but if you do want it, I don’t think it will clash - it’s still black, it will just add interest/texture with a new fabric! No biggie :)

I have an idea, tho it may not help a ton in the price issue….since you love the lace overlay could you do every other table as pictured and then every other table all black? Just a thought. It would be cheaper but you’d still get your gorg table!

@avhill: :sigh: I know, I feel your pain.

@Cole B: I’d be bummed if I didn’t use my napkins, either!

@Miss Guinea Pig: Quelle surprise…I never really thought about how option A would look multiplied 13 times around the room! Duh.

@Lovespearls: We did consider doing every other table, but would only be able to use 1/2 the napkins I made then. I appreciate the suggestion!

Actually I like the ties. It gives some depth to the chair. If the ties and the chair matched perfectly, the tie would be lost (and what a waste of money). If you don’t like the satin, try the organza.

Ugh. Linens are ridiculously expensive. When we got our quote I was thoroughly dumb-founded and all I could think about was what a killing these companies must make taking advantage of all of us brides! Ugh.

Linens are awful. I bought mine. They are boring and ivory but they are mine.

Yup. Linens are pricey…especially the overlays. They are beautiful though…

Are you having a sweetheart table? Maybe your could do just your table with the lace overlay. It would set it apart and look pretty without costing too much. Just a thought :)

yeah, linens really add up! i think foregoing the extras for the sake of your napkins (which are going to be WAY cooler and much more memorable) was a good idea. oh, and i don’t think you need ties, but that’s just me!

I agree with going with the napkins and nixing the pink cloth with black overlay if they don’t go with the napkins you’ve already bought fabric for. What about finding fabric which co-ordinates with the fabric you already have for the napkins and making your own overlays? While it’s hard to DIY a full round table cloth because the standard fabric width is not large enough, an overlay can be done with standard size fabrics. Did your vendor have “pillowcase” style chair covers? They have extra fabric and tie on themselves in back so you get the drapey effect without the extra cost of the ties. And it takes a little less time to set p as well. That’s what we ended up doing and I like how it turned out.

Gahhh I know the feeling! When we got our quote, I pretty much slammed my head on the table. Ridiculous…I think I’d go with nix’ing the lace top…since the table will be set, a good deal of the lace would be covered up anyway, right??? Could you possibly make some runners yourself? They would be pretty simple…and you could potentially find some black lace material similar to the original toppers you love! Just a thought!
