About Mrs. Rainbow

Thinly Veiled

December 31st, 2009 @ 10:19 am by Mrs. Rainbow

I never once doubted that I would be a veiled bride. I always thought they were beautiful, and a very necessary part of being “bridal”, at least from my perspective. Plus, how many times in your life do you get to wear a veil? Exactly.

Not only did I immediately know that I was without a doubt a veiled bride, but I always saw myself wearing a mantilla. A fingertip length, fancy, lacy little number like this:

Of course, this was back when I was still convinced that I wanted a dress covered in lace. Of course by now, we all know full well that that didn’t happen. The dress I fell in love with ended up being to total opposite of what I thought I wanted. Do you need a refresher? Here ya go.

Yup, tons of beading and not one stitch of lace on it, anywhere. Clearly, the mantilla was out.

I knew (or thought I knew) that I definitely didn’t want a long veil, so I went with my next logical option—a plain fingertip veil. It was the same length as the mantilla I had planned on wearing, just without the lace. Simple and pretty.

Then, while innocently looking at veils online, the evil that is the internet brought me to some images like these:

Uhm, yes, yes, and YES. Where do I sign up? I need some of that fabulosity in my life, immediately. After seeing these images, I knew a fingertip veil just wouldn’t cut it.

So I went back to Brides by Demetrios to try on some veils and I was totally right—the fingertip length just didn’t do it for me. It was time to go big or go home. I tried on a plain, cathedral length, single layer, soft tulle veil and it was electrifying—absolutely perfect. Yet again, I was walking away with something completely opposite of what I supposedly “knew” I wanted. Shows you how much I know, eh?

And that’s the story of how I went from wanting a lacy mantilla to a plain cathedral-length veil.

How did you pick your veil? Was it what you imagined you’d wear, or something totally different?

Hello, veil-twin! :) I’m attaching a single layer piece of tulle to my noggin, too. ;) I love how flowy they are — and it’ll look awesome with your gown!

I can completely understand the urge to jump from one to the next! I absolutely love the one you are going with! It will look so great with your dress! I went from wanting a double layer to wanting a birdcage to wanting a mantilla to going with a single layer fingertip with a few tiny pearls. Phew!

Oh, I love mantilla veils. I love simple chapel-length tulle veils. And I love birdcage veils. I also love the idea of wearing a flower or hairpiece and no veil. In other words, I have absolutely no idea what to do.

Somebody make a decision for me!!

I love how single layer tulle cathedral veils look in pictures (I think Avocado did it for me). I haven’t decided which veil to wear but I tried on a fingertip veil with a beaded edge that went well with my dress.

So pretty! Awesome choice.
@peachesandtulips - I am going all out and doing a birdcage for pictures and then a fingertip veil with 2 small silk flower hair clips for the ceremony, and just the flowers for the reception. Mrs. Espresso had a veil with flowers too for her wedding, and it looked beautiful.

I fell in love with mantilla veils too, in the beginning! And, like you, am not going to go with one and instead landed on a plain fingertip length veil :) But I think I’m stopping there and not going on to chapel length, although I LOVE those two B&W photos at the end. It will go great with your dress!

Like you, I wanted an all lace dress, but when I tried it on, it so wasn’t me! So instead I bought a dress that has not one piece of lace!! I was thinking in the beginning, I wasn’t going to do a veil, just a flower. But when i tried on my dress the sales lady put a veil on me, a mantilla veil at that, and I fell in love!! So I actually purchased a mantilla veil from a member on WB!!
So like you…I guess I didn’t know much either!!

That cathedral length veil is going to look fabulous with your dress! I think you made a smart decision to re-think it…it will look so romantic!!!

My veil was the one that I ended up trying on when I bought my dress - it had an unfair advantage of high emotion and being paired with The One ;)

You’re going to look amazing! I never thought I’d wear a veil…until I discovered the birdcage veil. Now I’m all over it!

Beautiful choice! I’m going a similar route, although mine will have two tiers, since I want to wear one over my face as a blusher.

I’m in the same boat … I thought I knew I wanted a plain fingertip and your post has only convinced me even more that cathedral may be the way to go. Hm….

I love both options. for me I knew I was too fussy to deal with the long one although they are super gorgeous in photos.

The one I did choose looks a ton like your first pic although the lace around the edge stops at about my shoulder so it is not going around my face, and it is a finger tip

Those are both pretty! I always thought I would wear a veil, but when I tried them on with my dress, I just didn’t love the look. I decided against wearing a veil, which was a total surprise.

I love those pictures with the cathedral veil, I can see how you were easily swayed by them!

I am so lost when it comes to veils . My dress is strapless but I will be wearing a bolero jacket for the ceremony, therefore a long veil seems like too much. I am leaning towards a finger tip veil….BUT those pictures you posted are lovely. Aughhh, I just can’t decide.
