When I asked Burger how he wanted to look at our wedding, he was pretty straightforward:
Definitely in a tuxedo (he said no to suits) - but one without tails. Definitely one that’s black (not grey, navy, or khaki). Definitely in a neck tie (no bow ties).
I couldn’t have agreed more. Mr. Burger actually has really great fashion sense, so I can’t say that I was really surprised that he had great ideas. And while most of the formal wear that we were looking at for inspiration were definitely tuxedos, they certainly had the look of suits to me (which I loved).
When it came time to actually pick out a tux for Burger, the whole process was pretty easy (guys are so lucky). We went to one of the downtown formal wear shops in State College, Mr. Tux, and met with the owner - the cutest older gentleman. We discussed the process and prices, and then checked out what they had to offer. Just by seeing the jackets on the mannequins, Burger eliminated a lot of the more formal looking tuxedos with skinnier, shorter lapels. He really liked the wider, longer lapels, and that’s when I realized that it was that lapel style that really radiated “suit”, with just a touch of the class that only a tuxedo can bring.
Wanna see his choice? It’s this Calvin Klein:

Isn’t it something how an ordinary object, when viewed in a different context, can provide an unexpected spark of wedding genius? Take this Christmas ornament from the MoMA collection, for example. Artist Eva Zeisel’s punch-hued, mouth-blown glass bell provides the perfect inspiration for these modern wedding details.

“Make an elegant invitation statement without the fuss. Stylish invitation sets with matching envelopes, reception and response cards included.”
I’ve mentioned the paper flowers we’re folding once before, as well as hinted at the flowers that will be popping up elsewhere (I refuse to call it a theme). So that means that in addition to the bouquets, boutonnieres, and centerpieces of real flowers, we’re also folding lots of paper flowers! And when I say we are folding, I mean me, my mom and friends. This is definitely not up Mr. Guinea Pig’s alley.
I was inspired when I saw these two posts (in the first link, scroll down to the cherry blossom flowers) by Miss Poodle! I love cherry blossoms, so I knew immediately that I wanted to supplement our natural flowers with some of these paper ones. I set out to find some nifty paper and started folding a few to see how I liked them.

During my much-anticipated wedding dress search, I found myself drawn to a certain style that I had not previously considered. This said style was elegant, sophisticated, and just altogether dreamy. So why am I not wearing one of them? Well, they were made of a charmeuse material (or double-faced silk or something) that clung to the body. That means every lump, bump, paunch, wrinkle and pimple showed up.
One of these dresses was Ginger by Kenneth Pool.

That delightful [read: crappy] cell phone shot is the only photo I took of our engagement shoot outfits. What we wore was much different than the initial idea for our outfits, or at least on my side. We ditched the bland black-and-white (and unintentional matching) outfits that we’d originally planned on wearing, and went for pop and fun.

This year, Mr. Spaniel and I are sharing our first Christmas tree. I never had one growing up (we didn’t do “Hanukkah Bushes” ’round these parts!), and I’m kind of loving the smell of the tree in the living room! We’d like to start a tradition of ornament exchanges, but since we’re just starting out this year and aren’t bringing any of our own ornaments into this relationship, our gifts to each other are packages of aluminum balls for $2.99 from Ross.
But, another year…

I found this ornament at Orna Mentz, and I immediately thought of a gold rosary, wrapped around a bouquet of white roses. So, I made a white and gold wedding inspiration board!
With the wedding QUICKLY approaching, I’m having mixed feelings about our planning progress so far. On the one hand, we wanted to keep things as simple and stress-free as possible, which is part of the reason we chose a destination wedding. Being thousands of miles away, our plan was to leave everything up to the hotel’s wedding coordinator, which both of us are totally fine with. On the other hand, the more I read about other peoples’ planning, the more things I end up wanting to incorporate into our day. We are definitely limited on how much we can bring given the baggage allowances with the airlines these days, but I find myself trying to stretch our limits with new plans every day.
A lot of stuff is still up in the air regarding our ceremony, which I think is part of my stress. I’ve talked to the coordinator about some of the details, like the flowers. I have since found out that we don’t have a choice when it comes to flowers; we get whatever is in bloom and looks the most fresh at the florist’s that day. It would have been nice to know that when I went and researched all the flowers they mentioned in the contract. As far as music goes, we can send a list of songs we want, but it totally depends on if the steel pan player knows them or not. From what I’ve been told by the coordinator though, I’m jumping the gun (not his exact words). According to him, the little details are usually discussed about a month before. A month??? For someone that’s trying to plan a wedding, a month before to me is pushing it. For example…

Well, since I hope my secret bee has received her package by now, I can share with you my holiday DIY project (really, my only holiday anything, other than a few cards and a string of lights along the gutter of our house).
All of the bees got together and did a holiday ornament exchange, but a few of us joined the hive too late to participate, so Miss Cheeseburger got 6 of us ’newbees’ organized to do our own ornament exchange. We set a $10 limit, and used Elfster.com to randomly draw names. And I got Miss Cheeseburger!
I started by making a card, using a very similar method as I will for our wedding invitations, laser cutter + layered paper. I will be doing something along these lines, but with our flower and vine motif on the cover:
Murphy is one devilish guy. He has this personal law that he lives by, and it goes something like this: If it can go wrong, it will. Murphy is like the kid you don’t really want to play with because he breaks all your toys, but you just can’t seem to hide from him. It’s like he finds you in the tree house, at the pool, on the playground. He’s got a knack for being in all the same places as you.
Murphy came in for unexpected visit. He’s like the 12th cousin twice removed from Cousin Eddie. He’s been staying with me for a while and doesn’t have plans to leave. This is a small piece of havoc he wrought in my life over the weekend:
I was driving to my 4th hair trial (story coming soon!) when I got trapped by a flash flood, blew a tire driving over a curb to avoid said flood, and then spent 4 hours in a 7-11 waiting for the flood waters to recede, all the while some large, intimidating men (whom the 7-11 employees guessed were strung out) tried to bust through the locked door. And that is the short story.
(That’s my poor little Corolla with the blown front tire and the missing hubcap!)
I really had very little interest in spending any amount of money on a garter. We are passing on the garter toss tradition (how did that even get started, anyway?), so no one but me (and Burger I guess) will see it, anyway!
I mentioned earlier that I had recently participated in a rural medicine month in a small town about 2 hours outside of Baltimore. I thought it would largely be a “craft-free” month, as I didn’t bring any of my supplies. Alas, overwhelming boredom quickly set in, and that, combined with the fact that my office was flanked by a Michaels on one side and a Jo-Ann Fabrics on the other, led to quite a bit of crafting!
One project that I completed there was my garter. I checked out Jo-Ann’s as well as a smaller, local fabric store, where I found 10 yards of a gorgeous rosey pink lace trim in the remnants department. For two dollars. I grabbed it, along with some pretty lilac colored ribbon that I thought looked beautiful with the lace. I ended up having to buy elastic and a needle and thread, because I didn’t even have that with me!
I’m sorry that I don’t have pictures of the process, but I wouldn’t recommend completing this project the way that I did anyway, because I sewed it completely by hand. This project took me multiple hours (like 4 or 5 I think), and would have taken probably 30 minutes on my machine. I didn’t mind because I was doing it to take up time purposefully, but if give the option, you should obviously do it on a sewing machine, for sure!
Here are the steps to creating this look:

After a few days of rain and spending most of my time indoors, the rain finally stopped. Rio was calling me outside to see its natural beauty. Rio is a very large and spread out city, so that day I enlisted the help of a guide, Madson, to get me around. Plus, I was a little starved for conversation, so it was nice to be able to talk to someone about everyday life as a Carioca (a Rio resident).
After many winding roads, a quick shuttle bus ride and an elevator, I finally made it to one of Rio’s most recognizable landmarks: Corcovado, or Christ the Redeemer.
