There’s something a little self-indulgent about engagement photos… but I do love to indulge myself! So before Mr. Spaniel and I started looking for a wedding photographer, we scoured Craigslist for someone to do an engagement shoot for us. I found someone who was working on building her weddings and engagement portfolio so she was offering a pretty good deal, and I liked the work I saw on her blog, so we made arrangements to meet. I really don’t remember how or why this fell apart, but we never actually did keep our appointment, so we put the engagement shoot on hold for a few months while I researched wedding photographers.
In the meantime, Mr. Spaniel and I wanted to send picture Save the Dates—okay, I wanted to send picture Save the Dates; I don’t think he knew what Save the Dates were—so we still needed an engagement shoot, with or without the professional photographer. We mentioned it to FMIL Spaniel during Easter brunch on a family trip to Cambria, and she wasted no time, taking pictures of us to my specifications (”we need pictures with our faces closer together!”) that very day. I don’t think I had a stitch of makeup on, and Mr. Spaniel hadn’t even bothered to comb his hair! Still, I’d say they were not too bad.

This is only one thing, singular, but it certainly is a favorite amongst many lovely shower gifts I received. Lambaid A outdid herself on the gift front. I can usually count on her to get me beautiful jewelry, fun kitchen gadgets, and other little luxuries. This gift is not only practical, but largely sentimental and just perfect for a shower (or for Christmas, if you’re still looking for gifts). Behold:
Nothing says, “Open me!” quite like the perfect wrapping job. Too bad I tore into it and then had to recreate the perfection to snap the shot above.
Mr. Guinea Pig and I have been working on the wording for our invitations, and surprisingly, it has been a bit of a struggle! Our invitations have a floral design on them but they’re not overly formal, and we’re having trouble finding a balance with the formality of the wording.
Our invitation designer recently sent us several options to choose from but Mr. GP and I gravitate towards different ones. Here are a few of the options we saw:
1) Dad and Mom Guinea Pig request the pleasure of your company at the marriage of their daughter…
2) … joyfully invite you to share in the marriage of their daughter…
3) … invite you to share in the celebration of the marriage of their daughter…
4) … invite you to share in the joy of the marriage of their daughter…
So, Mr. Guinea Pig likes #1 (I, for some reason, have a completely baseless aversion to saying it this way), and I like #3, but I don’t like all the ’of’s. #2 sounds like I’m asking people to share my marriage! I’ve been trying to find other options for this type of wording (i.e. my parents doing the inviting), and it turns out, there aren’t as many choices as I would have thought. Some other ones I’ve found are:

Mmmmmm, doesn’t that salad look delish? I like to think so, but Mr Trail Mix has other ideas…
I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s start at the beginning of our story. A few weeks ago, Sir Mix-A-Lot and I sat down with our caterer to hash out the menu details. She had emailed us her first draft of our menu a few weeks before and the thing that got me the most excited was her salad description:
“Mixed greens topped with raspberries, pine nuts and goat cheese with a balsamic vinaigrette.”
So. I’m a cupcake bride. I’ve never been that big of a fan of wedding cakes, or really, cakes in general. Sure they’re gorgeous, and I can’t get enough of watching Cake Boss or Amazing Wedding Cakes, but all the cakes I’ve ever tried have never tasted very good. They were either sickly sweet, chocolate (ick), or have chewy fondant frosting on them. Since I’m not the biggest fan of sweets in general, it’s kinda hard to get behind spending $800+ on something I really don’t want to eat.
But, cupcakes seem to have it all: the opportunity for several different flavors, frosting types, and designs, they can be much cheaper than a wedding cake, and they need a fantastic and fabulous 6 foot tall stand to hold them!
The inspiration for our cupcake stand came from a Craftster post from 2008. We changed ours up a bit by doing it in a square shape (to go with the square vases all of our flower arrangements will be in). Here is the mock up that Mr. Cola put together in SolidWorks.

{When we left off, Mr. M and I had parted ways after the rehearsal dinner, and he found himself startled by the timing of it all…}
The night before our wedding, I slept in bed with my momma, at the rental house that all eleven of my immediate family members had rented for the week. It was so cozy and stirringly appropriate to be transported via sense memory, back to childhood, surrounded by my family. Growing up, when my dad was out of town, I loved sleepovers in mom’s room - and here I was again. Right before I fell asleep, Mr. M texted me: The Wedding Countdown Clock my mom gave me at my shower was going off! I floated off to sleep amidst giggling, giddy with my mommy about what excitement the next day would bring.
I woke the next morning to breakfast in bed, courtesy of my (freaking awesome) sisters, and I felt magnificently rested and calm, even though there was much to do (and I am usually the opposite of a morning person). Dawn and Kim were so thoughtful about making sure I had a proper balanced meal (especially given my recent lack of appetite), and it definitely felt like royal bridal treatment. I didn’t manage to eat very much, but I nibbled casually in bed as I got down to business.

I know I’ve said it before but I spend A LOT of time looking at wedding blogs and inspiration online. I think Mr. Nachos is the only person that has even an inkling of how much I wedding-blog stalk. Anywho, now that we’ve established my level of crazy, I have to say that up until now, I’ve never been huge into wedding photography and usually skip past anything wedding photographer-related unless the pictures are really, truly amazing things I’ve never seen before. However, there’s something about first look photos that get me every time.
So there I sat, reading blogs, and I found myself tearing up at my desk when I saw these (could have been the pictures with a little added PMS, but bear with me) - photos taken the first time the bride and groom get to see each other on the wedding day. Here are a few pics that would have made me cry like a baby if I was at home… lucky for Mr. Nachos, this time I wasn’t…
This picture is just too sweet…

I thought, ‘what a nice idea! How hard could that be?” Well, it turns out it’s not hard to accomplish, but very hard to do it nicely - my results are below:

Just picture it: you’re in your gown, ready to walk down the aisle. Your bridesmaids have made their way down the aisle and are waiting for you at the altar. Your hair and makeup are immaculate, your veil “just so”. Your bouquet is absolutely gorgeous, and your train is splayed in a perfect semi-circle behind you. The music that you have painstakingly selected for your entrance beings, and you start to take your first step down the aisle towards your groom…
… and your knees start shaking, and maybe buckle. Suddenly, you notice that your hands are sweating profusely, and at that point your gown seems just a tinge on the tight side – tight to the point where it gets a teensy bit hard to take deep breaths. Your face gets flushed, your vision starts to get a little blurry, and you feel like you might be passing out. This is stage fright on steroids, except the steroids have downed 3 cans of Red Bull. OK, OK… maybe I’m exaggerating a little bit. But suffice it to say: I’m a shy bride.
After I had decided that ducks were elegant enough for our save the dates, I needed to come up with an overall design for the save the dates. What are you looking at? Me? Oh, no no no no no. Let me direct your attention to my wonderful friend, K. I met her the first day of college, which was, gulp, 15 years ago. She is like a sister to me, and so incredibly talented. She’s been designing wedding invitations here and there for friends and family, and she kindly offered her design talent to our wedding!
To actually put K’s design on the save the dates, my sister generously bought the Gocco (she will make way more use of it after the wedding–or at least that’s what I told her). K and I converged on my sister’s house one lovely weekend and we Goccoed away! An action shot from this very exciting event:

(yes, I wear circles cut out from Coke bottles for glasses, what of it?)
So what was the final design that K came up with? Here’s the unveiling (don’t get too excited…no really, don’t):
After the ceremony, a few photos, and signing our marriage license, it was time to head into Vail Village to take some photos. We hopped out of the limo near a local hotel and walked into the Village.

You may already know this, but Vail is considered a “walking town”. There are no cars allowed on the streets, and it’s primarily shops and restaurants for visitors to see.

Now that you’ve seen documentation of our ginormous challah and crazy hora, how about a few details that are less “holy crap” and (hopefully) a little more “ooh la la”?

Remember the papercut table numbers we commissioned from Etsy seller papercutdiecut? They stood out beautifully in the $1 acrylic frames I purchased from the Christmas Tree Store.
One of the unusual perks of our venue is that it allows dogs on-site—in fact, it has two resident dogs! And you do realize what that means, don’t you? More time with the Chelster!
Chelsea doesn’t like to have her picture taken
Chelsea is pretty much one of my favorite living things, and we could actually bring Chelsea to the wedding! Even though we won’t have children at our wedding (mostly because there are no children in our families yet), we could, in fact, have a ring bearer! Or maybe she should be a flower girl? Of course, it would be a ring bearer (or flower girl) who walked half-sideways, and would probably try to jump on my dress during the ceremony, and might bark at anyone who didn’t want her affectionate attention, but still!
