I am so excited, honored, and a little in disbelief (more on that later) to be writing this post! I’ve been hooked on Weddingbee since I was first introduced to it about 4 months into our engagement, and am definitely guilty of hitting refresh more times than is healthy to admit!
A little about Mr. Guinea Pig and me: we live in Baltimore, MD - which explains the title of this post. I couldn’t resist throwing in a little Baltimore flavor! BELIEVE is one of Baltimore’s slogans, and Hon is a really common term of endearment used in Baltimore - there’s even a HonFest every year! I was at work when I found out that I was going to be a bee, and the only thing I could think or say was, “I can’t believe it!” I jumped up and down, then ran through my lab squealing to tell my labmate, who responded, “BELIEVE, hon!” It was perfect for Weddingbee with a little ’bee’ modification!
I’m a science PhD grad student and since I spend all my time working in a lab, I couldn’t resist being Miss Guinea Pig! But don’t worry, even though guinea pigs are the iconic ’test subject’ I don’t actually work on animals… only bacteria! It’s not as gross as it sounds. Plus, the adorable guinea pig icon looks suspiciously like one of our cats, Buster! It was meant to be.

We’ve been finding that although our goal is to keep this wedding as uncomplicated as possible, there are still so many details to figure out!
In our wedding contract, we were allowed to choose what type of musician we wanted for the ceremony. Before we even got our choices, I knew I wanted a steel pan player because it goes perfectly with the beachy tropical feeling of our wedding. But now we’ve hit a road block…

Catch up on my dress buying experience here.
When I last left you, Mama Pudding and I were debating whether buying a beautiful sample dress at a greatly reduced cost made more sense than buying a more (4 times more!) expensive dream dress.
After my “Engagement Party” dress experience, I was very open to the suggestion that a less expensive dress was the way to go. In your comments, many of you mentioned how beautiful that dress was. This made me smile because I really was very “meh” about the dress when I bought it. I couldn’t find anything that was quite “bridal” enough, so I settled. And you know what? On the day, I looked beautiful in the dress. I really, truly believe that “I” looked beautiful in the dress, and not that the “dress” looked beautiful on me. This was because I was extremely, deliriously happy on that day, and I would have looked beautiful in a burlap sack. Keeping this in mind, it would have been very easy for Mama Pudding to convince me that the cheaper dress was the way to go.
Alas, Mama Pudding is never one to sacrifice quality for a good price. When I started leaning towards the cheaper dress, Mama Pudding put it like this: “Miss Pudding, if we had to choose a dress from that one boutique, and no other dresses existed, we would buy the sample gown and you would look gorgeous. This is your day, and you deserve YOUR dress, not just A dress.”

I personally love both up-dos and long flowy curls. So, like I always do when I am undecided, I asked Burger for his opinion. Imagine my surprise when he actually had an answer for me! He said that he likes my hair better down, and well, that was that! I started gathering inspiration pictures of long, curly styles.

Well, my friends, this is it. The beginning of our wedding recaps. I’ve been putting off starting for days because I’m a little overwhelmed about writing all of these posts in a way that shares how special that weekend was for us and also keeps you guys from getting bored, but I think I’m ready now.
I’m so so so excited to share our pro pics and show you why I’m so proud of the way everything turned out, but first things first. We hafta start where the weekend started: Thursday. Almost all of our families and our bridal party had to travel from out of state and this was the day that people started to arrive. Up until Thursday, I had been bumming around the house all week getting everything super clean and generally feeling excited for people to get here and totally useless because I had taken the week off from working and had nothing left to do! I was actually over-prepared and left with nothing to finish the week of our wedding… crazy, right? I guess that’s what you get when you’re engaged for 23 months!
That morning, my MOH and her family arrived from Alabama and they were the first people I saw! They took me out to a lovely lunch and were very pleased with themselves that they were the first to arrive and “got to spend some time with the bride before everything got crazy”. I was so touched that they came all the way to New York and they were incredibly helpful all weekend! Thank you, Carpenter family!

MOH, her Aunt, and her Father (Mom and Sis were there, too!)
I made appointments to visit two bridal shops with Mama Spaniel one day in late August. Dress shopping with Mama Spaniel was not the greatest of successes the first time, and so I made sure that I was very clear on my options before I took her back. Earlier in the week, I’d scheduled an appointment with the same shop that I’d had my earlier success in, because (1) I’d had some success, and (2) they price match. But Mama Spaniel really wanted to make a day of it, and so I made a second, earlier appointment at a shop just a few short blocks from my apartment.
I admit, I was nervous. The online reviews of the shop were lackluster (as they seem to be for most shops carrying inventory primarily below the $2,000 mark), and the manager who took my appointment by phone seemed less than thrilled to be speaking to an excited, enthusiastic bride like myself (I thought she might fall asleep on the phone with me. Maybe it’s just me, but I just do a lot better with higher energy people!). But the shop had a few things going for it. First, it was within walking distance from my apartment—fittings couldn’t possibly be any easier! And second, they carried Allure Bridals and Maggie Sottero gowns, and Dessy bridesmaid’s dresses, which is pretty much my holy trinity: my two top dress contenders are Allure, I was intrigued by at least one Maggie dress, and my bridesmaids are going to be wearing Dessy for sure. (They also carried La Sposa, an early favorite of mine!) So it was with low expectations but high hopes that, a few minutes late (as always; this is my mother!) we arrived at the tiny shop down the street… only to find one woman, clearly not an employee (and also, it turns out, not an English speaker), knitting in the corner.

It’s my pleasure to introduce the very last baby animal to the hive: Miss Guinea Pig. She’s a self-proclaimed nerd planning a beautiful wedding on the water! Join me in welcoming Miss Guinea Pig to the hive!

Miss Guinea Pig, Baltimore/Stevensville, MD
Age & Occupation: 26, PhD student
Fiance’s Age & Occupation: 26, Operations Director at a non-profit
Engagement Date: December 25, 2008
Wedding Date: May 2010
Venue: The Chesapeake Bay Beach Club
About Me: I’m a tomboy science nerd whose girly side has made a startling appearance thanks to wedding planning! I love to bake, knit and sew but I also ride a motorcycle (that Mr. Guinea Pig wouldn’t touch with a 10 foot pole). We live with our three crazy cats and love to read, travel, watch movies, and do home improvement projects together! My parents/family are Canadian but I’m definitely American, although I’ve lived in 5 different countries, 6 different states, and speak Russian fluently. Mr. GP and I met online (did I mention I’m a scientist?) and had a whirlwind romance - now we can’t wait to get married & celebrate with all our friends and family in a blue and yellow waterfront affair!
When we last met, all the girls had their hair all beautified, and it was my turn.

And the nerves and anticipation of the day hit me.

Let’s see, where were we? Oh yes, I left you hanging right before my last appointment of the day!
But before I continue, on the off chance that Mr. Cola is reading this, STOP! Please no looking past this point!

So now that you’ve seen the ring and know that I laughed in his face, I thought I’d share our proposal story.
Let me first preface the story by saying that I’m not a big center-of-attention person. I love hosting parties for other people, but I get all awkward turtle when all the attention is on me. The mans knows this, so he wasn’t about to whip out a ring in the middle of an ice skating rink (although I do enjoy witnessing those proposals!).
Our invitations raised a few ewebrows. At one point, I thought they just might be the black sheep of the wedding planning process. All because I put my little hoof down and refused to order response cards for our invitation suites. I was working on the principle of not creating more paper and postal transportation waste, and the decrease in necessary postage for each suite was a bonus as well. Lambster and I stood our ground despite some “suggestions” from others. We did need to accommodate a few elderly guests who did not have computers and I figured that I would make the handful of needed response cards for these exceptions.
Then, something extraordinary happened. I won a prize! I’m the girl who never wins anything, but miracle of all miracles, I won a uprinting.com giveaway on Roddy Bride’s blog! I had a little over a month to figure out what to do with 200 free postcards. I asked a friend to work up a design, but he was swamped with work and couldn’t find time. So with about 1 week until the deadline, I found myself with no artwork to upload. I figured that I’d try to make something on my own and that a map would be a perfect choice to include in our suites. Witness my very pathetic map FAIL:
You couldn’t read anything and none of the roads made sense. Baaaaaaaaad.
In my opinion, this is the defining photograph of a Catholic wedding ceremony:

When I bought my first dress that I ended up exchanging, I had bought all of my accessories that same day. Luckily, everything I picked out goes very well with my new dress, as well.
My necklace (it’s very sparkly in person)…
