The holidays are filled with endless amounts of ornaments… and I wish I could buy them all. But this year my Christmas tree features red and turquoise balls—nothing too fancy. When I saw this pretty little horse ornament, I knew I wanted to do something with it.

Of course, it didn’t fit into my current holiday decorations, but I loved the colors and decided to make a mood board instead. There’s no limit when it comes to colors for a wedding palette, as long as you use them wisely. So, my inspiration board features 5 colors: blush pink, purple, beige, olive green, and turquoise/teal.

I looooooooooooove the holidays. Love. Them.
It’s easily my favorite time of year. Everything is so sparkly and shiny and beautiful, and (to quote one of my favorite holiday movies) “love actually is all around.”
I think there are so many things that can inspire brides during the holidays. I chose this ornament, as it represents the romance and glamour that the holidays provide:

I developed this board with those thoughts of romance and glamour in mind. The palest pink, deepest red, and gorgeous gold accents work so well together - both in the ornament and in the wonderful world of weddings. Enjoy!

I found the delicate gold ornament at Macy’s and couldn’t get my mind off a winter wedding. Here’s to you, my fellow winter brides!

Top Row L-R: Jujubee Stationary Designs: The Stacy, Rosanna Dauphine: Gold Candlestick, Art is an Impact: Unforgettable Moments, Tempus Fugit: I’m Late I’m Late Gold Pocketwatch
Middle Row L-R: O.H.H.A: Gold Paisley Woven Silk Tie, Macy’s: Baldwin Christmas Ornament, 3″ Killington Ice Flower, Vintage Bella Bride: Snowflake Handmade Necklace
Bottom Row L-R: Miniature Gold Chair Favor Box, Debra Moreland is Paris: Daddy Long Legs Cake Jewelry, Touch Ups: Anneka, Reem Acra: Princess and the Pea
When I picture my “other wedding”, I cannot help but imagine New York City in the winter. There’s something so ethereal about snow-covered branches in Central Park, ice skating, and buying overpriced chestnuts from the ubiquitous street vendor. I am so excited to build my winter inspiration board around this ornament:
How can you resist this fancy little bird?
And now, on to my board!

It seems I am not alone in my aversion to bridal dress shopping. So many of you shared the same apprehension with me. But it wasn’t just the in person shopping that had me glum. After looking at countless magazines and online wedding dress galleries I wasn’t feeling any inspiration—in fact, I was feeling the opposite. I could rattle of long lists of things I didn’t want. No lace, no beads, no ruffles, no poof, no train, no bustle… ughhh. It’s hard to start designing a wedding dress from a list of negatives.

Thank goodness for Olivia Luca. This Portland OR based designer at least got my Pretzel brain thinking about wedding dresses. In brief, you select the bodice, skirt style, accents, fabrics and colors. The dress is made to a standard (i.e. not bridal) size. The fabrics are all natural fibers; most are sustainable and eco-friendly. I personally love Dupioni silk. Plus, the website is a blast.

Or “An Inspiration Board based on a Star Wars Christmas Tree Ornament”
I hope you don’t mind me taking a brief break from my recaps to share with you my take on the Christmas ornament inspiration board!
I searched through Etsy, my go-to spot for unique items, for the perfect ornament to use as a springing off point for this series. Inspiration did not strike. However, I did start to chuckle when I came across this gem from Etsy Seller blackrose1151:
I adore things like Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter, and the more I thought about it, the more the inner nerd in me wanted very badly to base an inspiration board based on this ornament.
At first, I started gathering pictures that were fun, but definitely a little campy. But I quickly decided that I wanted this to be a serious inspiration board based on Star Wars, not a joke. And I really believe that you can take subtle inspiration from just about anything and turn it into a gorgeous affair.

When I said I loved to shop for wedding dresses, I meant it. I went to a total of 10 places in NYC, San Francisco, and the Washington DC area. I also spent hours online looking at preownedweddingdresses.com, hoping to find one of the dream dresses I had tried on for a discounted price.
On all these trips, my mom was with me. I feel incredibly lucky that we shared the dress shopping experience. After my sister’s wedding 11 years ago, I think my mom was a little burnt out from the wedding planning process (yes, the trauma still lives on after a decade). But looking for wedding dresses was something that she was still excited about, and that we could do together.
Originally, I wanted something “understated”, “simple”, and like an “evening gown”. However, one of the Vera Wang dresses my sister practically threw over my head (I was putting up a fight) totally captivated me:

While this ornament is the inspiration for the color palette for this inspiration board, it is actually one of my good friends who inspired me to use this ornament. She absolutely LOVES anything and everything celestial that has moon and stars, so why not have a moon and stars-themed wedding?
The colors are mainly navy blue, with an accent color of yellow. I totally picture this wedding happening in the early evening, before the sun sets, with the reception party under the moonlight (maybe under a clear tent).

I’m not sure how important finding the right bridal clutch is. At least, I wasn’t sure, until I thought I let the perfect one sell out.

Here we are waiting, pre-haircuts. You can see our super-hot legs.
One thing that really helped me sanity-wise before the engagement shoot was us getting our hairs did. I had an appointment to have my hair cut the day before the shoot, and Mr. S’s hair needed a little trimming. I thought it would be fun if we both got our hairs did in fancy land together. So, well, we did. Of course I took too many pictures of the event, but I needed to document Mr. S’s fancy-salon experience! (I’m usually his hair cutter… or he also is…)

While Mr. Spaniel and I considered whether we were willing to drop the extra cash on an imperfect match of a wedding band (or buy a plain ring instead), we thought we’d visit a few other jewelry stores and see if we could find anything better. Although I was pleased as pie with my engagement ring, I was just plain mad that the shop was so unhelpful in finding the matching band, and I didn’t want to give them more of our money. In fact, I was willing to spend (a little) more to give our business to someone else who hadn’t already annoyed us.
We ended up walking into a big chain store after our first failed attempt at ring shopping, hoping that we’d find something closer to the original and apparently unavailable band just through the law of large numbers—with so much variety, surely they’d have something that would work! I am so glad we gave it another shot before we went and bought a ring I wasn’t as excited about, because we found a Miss Spaniel-can-hardly-complain-about-it-it’s-so-similar wedding band at Robbins Bros! It’s true that the profile isn’t quite as high as my e-ring (part of the reason is that my e-ring is too big and needs to be re-sized), but everything else lines up pretty much perfectly.
On top of planning the actual wedding, we also have a party to plan! Since we’re only having family in St. Thomas, we wanted to have a big party back home that wouldn’t break the bank, but would give us a chance to get all of our friends together for some post-wedding celebrations. First things first, we had to pick a venue.
My first thought was our parents’ backyards. They’re right next to each other so we started throwing around the idea of having a big summertime barbecue between the two lawns. Pros: easy parking for everyone in the ‘burbs, no charge for renting space, everyone could celebrate where we used to play as kids, and we could make it casual or fancy. Cons: I started thinking about everything that would have to go into it – the food, drinks, tent, tables and chairs, tableware, music, and what would we do about the bathroom situation? I know I wouldn’t want 150 people coming in and out of my house to use my bathrooms—that just spells disaster to me. But I also didn’t want to have to rent Port-A-Potties – they don’t exactly scream ‘let’s celebrate’!
The second X-Acto knife intensive project I recently completed was a sign that will go on the escort card table, showing guests where to find their table on the deck.
If you remember from my crazy Photoshop post, the layout of our reception will look very much like this, with the escort card table on the grass next to the two level deck:
At the suggestion of our DOC, I not only will number our tables in order of table placement (not in order of who’s more important and sitting at that table), but I also made a diagram to put on the table, so people can look at their table assignment, then look at the diagram to see where to find their table.
