Mrs. Cheeseburger's Picture
Mrs. Cheeseburger, Baltimore, MD/State College, PA Age and Occupation: 25, Medical Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Medical Student Engagement Date: June 28, 2008 Wedding Date: March 2010 Venue: Catholic Church Ceremony & Hotel Reception About Me: I'm a passionate girl from Pittsburgh, currently living in Baltimore for school, who loves Penn State, seeing movies, football, thunderstorms, black and white photos, Christmas, good beer, my amazing friends and family, and of course, my mister! We met, fell in love, got engaged, and will be married at our alma mater (go lions!) in a traditional Catholic ceremony followed by a hotel reception with lots of DIY details. It means so much to have our families and friends meet at our favorite place on earth to celebrate our love for one another - I truly couldn't ask for anything more!
About Mrs. Cheeseburger

Music is a very important part of our relationship. Burger is a talented musician (in my opinion), and he introduced me to a lot of amazing tunes that I otherwise never would have heard. Because of this, we hope to customize as much of the music played on our big day as possible.

Because we are having a Catholic mass, our ceremony music choices are slightly limited. We are not allowed to have secular music in any form (even instrumentals). We were, however, given a list of “Catholic approved” classical music to choose from, thus, giving us some room for personalization.

Here are our (fairly standard) selections for the ceremony:

Processional (Family & Bridesmaids): “Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring”, Bach

Processional (Flower girls, Me & Cheeseburger Dad!): “Cannon in D”, Pachelbel

Lighting of the Unity Candle: “Be Thou With Them”, Bach

Presentation of Flowers to the Blessed Mother: “Ave Maria”, Shubert

Recessional: “Water Music”, Handel

We’ve been to lots of weddings with both bands and DJs, and while some of the bands really blew our minds, others really were no better than a good DJ (but about $4,000 more expensive, according to our friends!). Given the extra expense of a band, and the fact that we literally have no space left in our reception venue for a band, we started to talk DJs.

After discussing our options at length, Burger and I decided not to use the DJ for the cocktail hour. Considering that it’s a time spent mingling and chatting, we doubted that most people would notice the music, anyway. Plus, we figured that it would create an unnecessary financial and logistical burden - thus, our iPod Cocktail Hour was born!

We’ll be programming the music onto both of our iPods (with back-up playlists on our phones and laptops, just in case), and using our iPod speakers to play some subtle tunes while we’re all munching on hors d’oeuvres.

We’ve thought long and hard about our music selections, and throughout this series you’ll probably notice some wedding staples as well as some pretty out-there choices. We like to think of our cocktail hour music as modern alternative romantic. Take a look at our choices!

  • Ants Marching - Dave Mathews Band
  • Come on Eileen - Dexy’s Midnight Runner
  • Brown Eyed Girl - Van Morrisson
  • Stuck in the Middle With You - Stealer’s Wheel
  • Your Love - Outfield
  • Say Hey (I Love You) - Michael Franti & Spearhead
  • I’m Yours - Jason Mraz
  • The Best of Me - Starting Line
  • La La Lie - Jack’s Mannequin (yes, it’s a song about breaking up, but we had to throw a Jack’s song in there!)
  • Hey Soul Sister - Train
  • Alive With the Glory of Love - Say Anything (one of our favorites - hence the napkin quote)
  • You and Me - Lifehouse
  • Last Night on Earth - Green Day

Were you at all limited in your ceremony music selection? If so, what did you end up using? And, are you DIYing any of your music?

I love traditional ceremony music-we did stray a bit with “Bittersweet Symphony” for our recessional. And you KNOW I’m down with Come on Eileen. :) It was great having a live band at our reception, but there a number of more modern songs that were not in their repertoire that we had to use a CD for. For sheer range of music lunless you hire a $10K orchestra), a DJ is the best choice-(s)he can usually get people up & dancing!

I like your suggestions. We used that Water Music as our recessional, too. We didn’t get married in a church, so we weren’t limited in our choices, but we wanted something relatively traditional.

I LOVE Canon in D, and have always wanted it to be my song to walk down the aisle to. The only thing I have always worried about is my walk being too short for the song. Thats why it can be perfect for BM’s.

I like the idea of using it for the FG’s and you. You also much have a super long aisle.

We’re pretty much limited to songs that the steel pan player knows. And for the home party, I’m thinking that since we only have half of the restaurant, our background music will be bar music. Eh.

La La Lie is a fun choice even if the meaning isn’t a perfect fit– I love Jack’s!

I know it has nothing to do with you, but I just wanted to point out that the person who posted that youtube video of Pachabel’s Cannon used a photo of Mozart, not Pachabel. It made me laugh. You’ve made some great musical choices…I used the Bach too!

@arubagirl: SO true! It is a really long song… I have it planned (in my head, ha) so that I will start walking at about 2:20 or so… I’ll work backwards from there to get the timing right once we have our meeting with the organist… if I have to cut out some versus I will :)

@Piccateer: haha that is too funny :)

ps - loving all the Jack’s and Say Anything love :)

Great choices! I love Pachelbel’s Canon and Handel’s Water Music! We’re struggling with choosing ceremony music…

Also, for all the ladies who love Pachabel’s cannon but thinks it is too long, fear not! The piece is very easy for most musicians to find a cadence to have a proper ending…it is really easy to find a stopping point so you can time it to work for your specific circumstance.

How funny about your church’s music policy. You said they’ll allow no secular music, not even instrumental, yet Pachelbel’s Canon in D (not “cannon”!), Handel’s Water Music are both very much secular pieces of music.

Fortunately, there’s still an seemingly infinite number of music choices available for brides which are classical in nature and more or less suitable for use in churches!
