Mrs. Guinea Pig's Picture
Mrs. Guinea Pig, Baltimore, MD Age and Occupation: 26, PhD student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Operations Director at a non-profit Engagement Date: December 25, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: The Chesapeake Bay Beach Club About Me: I'm a tomboy science nerd whose girly side has made a startling appearance thanks to wedding planning! I love to bake, knit and sew but I also ride a motorcycle (that Mr. Guinea Pig wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole). We live with our three crazy cats and love to read, travel, watch movies, and do home improvement projects together! My parents/family are Canadian but I'm definitely American, although I've lived in 5 different countries, 6 different states, and speak Russian fluently. Mr. GP and I met online (did I mention I'm a scientist?) and had a whirlwind romance - now we can't wait to get married & celebrate with all our friends and family in a blue and yellow waterfront affair!
About Mrs. Guinea Pig

Sometimes people love registering (yay gifts!), sometimes people hate it (boo decor arguments). For Mr. Guinea Pig and me, it was sort of a neutral experience. We both feel weird making a list of things we want people to get us… but if people are going to give us stuff anyway, we’d rather be able to make suggestions for what we’d like. And because we use it for everything else in our life, our main registry is at Amazon.com (although I have yet to explore the Universal Registry Button)! We registered at Target and Crate & Barrel for some brick & mortar options as well. But, to offset our creepy feelings of registering for gifts, we are also suggesting on our wedding website that in lieu of gifts, people can make donations to two charities that have a lot of meaning to us: the Maryland SPCA, and Playworks. I have no idea how many people will take advantage of that option, but just knowing it’s there put Mr. Guinea Pig and me more at ease.

So, on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, Mr. GP and I sat down with our computers and added stuff to our 3 registries. Independently. And we never set foot in a store. Is that weird?

Mr. GP and I are almost exclusively online shoppers. Neither of us really likes to shop, so if we can avoid actually going into a store, we most certainly will (my only exception: crafts/fabric/yarn stores). I think part of it is that we live together - so we already have plates, glasses, and a blender/toaster/mixer/etc. But we just started adding stuff as we thought of it, and would occasionally check what the other person had added. Generally I added kitchen stuff, and Mr. GP added ’house’ stuff (a wheelbarrow, Flip video camera, DVD player, and the like). I’ll admit, it is exciting to think about having a nice set of pots and pans, since ours are currently a mishmash of old IKEA and Target stuff!

Similarly to many consumers these days, I base a lot of my choices on customer reviews of products. So when I was deciding what to add to our registry, I pulled reviews from as many places as possible. My favorites are, of course, Amazon’s reviews themselves, Cooks Illustrated for anything kitchen-related, Consumer Reports for stuff in general, and CNET for electronic goodies. Not to mention just Googling the item + review! Using a combination of those sites really helped us decide on items.

Here are a few of the things I’m most excited about on our registries:

Registries: Have Other People Shop for You! : wedding registry Targetr targetr

(Square Floor Lamp with Paper Shade, from Target)

We have this small poorly lit space on one side of our couch that’s too small for an end table, and also needs a lamp - this is the perfect solution. Man, we sure are practical.

Registries: Have Other People Shop for You! : wedding registry Amazonr amazonr

(Victorinox 8-piece Knife Block, on Amazon)

I heard it’s bad luck to gift knives as gifts, but we have 2 knives in our kitchen, both dull. I can’t wait for a set of sharp knives (anyone have any better recommendations on a knife set?)! Who cares about superstition? If people wish us harm, I’m pretty sure they can do worse than give us knives. After all, then we can defend ourselves!

Registries: Have Other People Shop for You! : wedding registry C26bre c26bre

(OXO 10-piece Pop Container Set, Crate&Barrel)

Like Miss Ramen, I’m super excited about organizing the mess we’ve got going on in our kitchen cabinets/pantry right now.

Registries: Have Other People Shop for You! : wedding registry Amazonr01 amazonr01

(Silpat Nonstick Silicone Baking Mat, on Amazon)

I call myself a serious baker and yet I don’t have one of these! Oh, the horror!

Overall, we registered for about 95 items, but we’re inviting about 200 people to the wedding. And, we really really struggled to come up with ideas on stuff to register. One place I saw suggested you register for 3 gifts/guest to give people options and account for showers/parties! That is incomprehensible to me. What if you just don’t want that much stuff?!

How was the registry process for you? Would you ’register’ at charities? What are you most excited about on your registry? Anyone else struggling to register for ’enough’ stuff?

Registering was fun, but unexpectedly stressful. Registering at charities is a really cool idea. I’m interested to see if people take advantage of that option. Also, we registered for those OXO pop containers and I LOVE them. They made our pantry so much more organized–I feel like I have a lot more space now.

We just registered today at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. It wasn’t a terrible experience, but I would not consider it fun. I love to cook, so I hope we receive a food processor and mixer we registered for!

that sounds fun! and a nicer knife set is definitely a great thing to have if your current sets aren’t the highest quality ever. but instead of replacing knives, you should be sharpening them! a good knife set should last a lifetime, but it’s no good if you don’t sharpen them often. a steel (that rod that comes with the set) will straighten the blade, but maybe
think about adding a sharpener to your registry.

Oh GP I HEAR you on the registering! Mr. B and I were JUST doing it this afternoon too! We are having such a hard time because we don’t know where we will be living when we get married yet, so it makes it so hard to know how much counter/cabinet space we will have, etc! We have around 200 people invited, and I’m pretty sure our registry only has around 100 items on it…***sigh***

We’ve been trying to think of some fun options to add as well…maybe some board games (hey, that can be part of hosting a party too, right???)?

Good luck!

most people in my circle give one gift, either at the shower or brought to the wedding so i never knew that multiple gifts were in order or common practice! we’ll probably be moving in together shortly before we get married and will need stuff so it’ll be interesting on how we figure out what to register for!

I love that lamp! Although no one has bought anything from our registry (that we did totally online, I’m with you on the online shopping choice), I’m tempted to start a registry at Target, too, for some of the stuff we couldn’t register for at BBB. Say, for instance, a square floor lamp :)

We did most of our registering online too. It’s just so much easier! Also, as for the amount of items, some people really might do the charity thing, so you might not have to register for as many items.

a tip until you get your new knives– you can get any knives sharpened for free at kroger (and probably other grocery stores as well!) : )

That is a fantastic alternative to the tradional registering burden…..and also gives you a chance to share causes that mean a lot to you, as a couple, with others! I can’t wait to pass this fantastic idea on to other brides!

For a knife set, I recommend Henckels. My momma’s set is going on 15 years strong, and when I (finally) register, it’s going on mine!

I love the Target lamp!! The 3 items per person is an industry thing. I highly recommend Wusthof knives-we have a set & love them. (Crate & Barrel carries them.)

@Jessie516: I’ll keep you posted if people use the charities option!
@fromcharleston: Currently we just have two knives from Ikea, I guess I never considered them sharpenable (hmm, not a word….)?
@Miss Buttons: Yes!! We registered for Apples to Apples and actually Mr. GP’s sisters got it for us for Christmas :) I fully support registering for board/party games!
@Miss Nachos: Are you only registered at BBB? I say it’s totally fine to register at Target, too! I guess we have a serious lighting deficiency in our house or something, because we registered for 3 different lamps, and actually have places to put them all if we happen to get all 3!

@Miss Frozen Yogurt: We’re sort of thinking that if items start to run out on the registry more people will be inclined to donate to charity instead of us adding more stuff. At least, that’s what we’re hoping!
@soniasays: Hmm, there are no Kroger’s around here, but I’ll have to look into that at our local grocery stores, thanks for the tip, I had no idea!
@Susan Southerland: Thanks! It has been nice to share the causes (and why those particular ones) on our website, since not necessarily everyone knows how important they are to us.
@MissLLC, eileen marie: Thanks for the knife recommendations!

Our registry is so ramshackle at this point. My initial wish was to be registered at as few places as possible, but I feel as if I’m going to have to let go and register at more. Wanna finish my registry for me? Kthx. :p

We also had trouble coming up with things to register for, since I don’t like having stuff around the house that’s not in use (read: clutter). So far I’ve added lots of sheets and towels because it’s 1- always good to have more, 2- really nice to have new ones, 3- we’re looking forward to hosting guests. Btw we just got the oxo pop containers and they’re awesome!

registering was a long process–constant refining. and while we wanted to register at only one place at the beginning, it grew to 3 places. we’re doing amazon also!

My knife set was my favorite gift. I never realized how dull our knives were until I got fancy new ones. Now I actually like chopping things by hand.

That lamp is really cute!

I like that you’ll be giving the option of donations, and I’d never heard of Playworks, which I’m actually excited to look into it more!

When it comes time for us to register, I’m sure we will have some difficulty, since we have what we need, too.

We did a honeymoon registry and a charitable donation option. Unfortunately we only got ONE donation to our charity. I was pretty disappointed about that, but I’m not sure what else we could have done to promote it.
