Come On, an Instant Camera?

January 2nd, 2010 @ 1:10 pm by Mrs. Pug

I mean, who needs those things anymore? Well, I do! Particularly if I want to make our DIY faux-tobooth/guestbook work (after the wedding, I will put people’s pictures in a guestbook next to the messages that they left us).

So, what do I need for this fxbooth?

Equipment
Since Polaroid film is, for the moment, no longer in production, I am thinking of turning to the Fujifilm Instax camera:

Come On, an Instant Camera? : wedding albums photography Fujiin

Source ($46.90 at Amazon and other locations (you can probably find it on eBay for cheaper)

The film costs about $15 to $20 per 20 exposures, which you can find at B&H Photo Video, Adorama, Amazon, etc.

As for albums, there are a variety of options. Some companies offer a kit, including an album, camera and film:

Come On, an Instant Camera? : wedding albums photography Adesso

Source ($149.95 at Adesso Albums)

The Adesso option is great because everything comes together and the album has sleeves into which guests slide their photos.

However, I want to have an album with removable pages, not only to be able to add additional photos if necessary, but also to smooth the process for guests. Sometimes there can be a line of people waiting to sign the guestbook, but with removable pages, multiple guests can work on their messages at the same time.

My search told me that for elegant cloth-covered albums with removable pages, Kolo is the best choice.

First, there is the Trivino, an 11.75″ x 10.75″ three-ring binder available in cloth and leather.

Come On, an Instant Camera? : wedding albums photography Kolotr

Source ($25 for cloth cover, $39 for leather)

There is also the Newport, which was used by Mrs. Lime and others–it comes in 8.5″ x 11″, 12″ x 12″, and 11″ x 14″ sizes:

Come On, an Instant Camera? : wedding albums photography Kolone

Source ($39 to $49 depending on size)

Lastly, there is the Newbury, which is the one I eventually chose. Because of its slightly smaller size (8.75″ x 10.25″), guests won’t feel pressured to fill a ton of space.

Come On, an Instant Camera? : wedding albums photography Kolone01

Source ($35, although I found it for $29 on at Adorama in certain colors)

Each Fujifilm Instax photo is about 3.5″ x 4.25″, so I was thinking about placing two photos per page, for a total of four photos on one sheet back and front.

While I’ve clearly thought about this fxbooth a lot, I’m not totally sold, particularly because I’m not sure whether people will take advantage of it. We’re having a no-dancing reception, so there won’t be as much time as in other receptions where people are getting up and mingling. Or, am I wrong? Will people wander around during courses? Man, I hate trying to predict human behavior. What do you guys think?

I was actually going to use that same exact camera at our wedding. :o) It’s such a better price/quality, over polaroid, since it’s still in production. Great idea, I had no idea about the Album kit!

how many courses are you serving? how much time will there be between course? i’m more inclined to stay put during meals because eating is that important to me. some people might take advantage during cocktail hour our even after the meal. human behavior is hard to predict!

I heard polaroid was coming back. They announced it a few months ago. I’d keep your eye out for film.

I was in charge of the guest book at my cousin’s wedding last year and we used a polaroid to take everyone’s picture and had the exact same album that’s in the kit…bad idea. The slots are very, very tight for fitting a polaroid so it took a lot of time to maneuver the picture in before the guests could write their message. I think it would be even more difficult having all the guests have to position their own pictures. It’s a great idea, I would just find a different album.

I had a reception with stations and in a venue with multiple rooms, so people were up and moving a lot even without a ton of dancing. We had a couple of Polaroid cameras around with lots of film and everyone loved them. I did that in combo with a bulletin board guest book, and I got many more photos than cards completed. Mostly a couple of people seemed to take charge of the cameras (unasked) but they did a good job of getting pictures of a variety of people.

You know your guests… With a sit-down dinner, do you think some of them will get up, or will there be a time for that? If so, then I think the instant photos were a lot of fun and enjoyed by my guests.

I definitely think this could work - you just need to put signs up around letting guests know what to do. Maybe even have your DJ say something at the beginning of the reception to let guests know!

Sorry, I should that, even though I had the albums available at the reception, most people just left their pictures on the guestbook table or on the bulletin board for others to see.

I just used these books from Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com.sg/Polaroid-Photo-Album-SX70-600-Black_W0QQitemZ390117958500QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item5ad4d7a364.

I just got the same camera for christmas for use at my wedding. I haven’t done much with it yet, but it looks like so much fun! I am not doing a fauxtobooth, but rather having a couple people in my wedding party take pictures of the guests then giving them a piece of cardstock or “guest book page” where they will affix the picture and fill out other stuff on it…ala Mrs. Eggplant. I am pretty excited for this guest book and based of what I have read from other people it works out really well. I think just as long as people are aware your fauxtobook is there they will totally use it, it’s such a fun idea!

At other weddings I’ve attended I wondered around a lot during cocktails, waiting for dinner, during dinner and after. I think ppl will make their way over to it, especially if they know about.
You could even assign one or two people to walking around to tables to tell ppl about it :)

I love this idea, I think it’s great.

And even if it was a dinner only and no dancing reception, I’d totally mingle. And if I saw a fauxtobooth, you’d basically have to drag me away from it. :-)

Weird, I’ve been reading about/responding to posts about guestbook alternatives and this camera all day! Maybe someone is trying to tell me something?? I’ve been loving what I’ve been reading! :)

Thanks SO MUCH for the KOLO link. That was the only piece of the puzzle that remained, and you filled it in for me! I trust your research, and this is exactly what I had in mind. And the price is right!

Have you seen Mrs. CreamPuff’s (aka Stinkerpants’) faux-to booth guestbook blog post? Lots of helpful info there for creating this, and setting up the guestbook table, and the guestbook itself so guests know what you’re looking for.

actually, polaroid is back!!! just found out today. super cool and excited.

It’s called the POGO series and there are two products… one is the digital camera + printer in one, and the other is a mobile printer (just prints out photos). i’m interested in the digi cam + printer in one for a guestbook as you’ve described above. only downside to this is that the pictures are quite small 2×3inches… good thing is that it is printed on sticky paper, so you can just peel off the back and stick the pics anywhere.
the digi cam+printer is about $1500HKD so thats about $188USD.
the film comes in 30 per pack for $80HKD.. thats about $10USD.

check it out at http://www.polaroid.com/pogo

I think people should hopefully be excited about the photobooth, but I’ve had the same doubts myself. I’m planning on mentioning it in the programs, so people will feel more encouraged to go get their photo taken.

We are doing this too, and I’ve had my doubts as well, but I trust that they will want to do it… especially since our reception is also no-dancing, it will be a fun activity when not eating.

@tea: those are definitely good considerations, and reasons why i’m wavering on having the fx booth. we shall see!
@Miss Cola: @daniellemybelle: i know, it’s kind of tough to decide. i don’t think any bride would regret going forward with it, though!
@princess poolau: oh cool, thanks!
@bananapants: i can’t believe i missed that post–i will totally go back and read it now. thanks!
@amanda.lynn: @Mrs. French Bulldog: that’s the kind of human behavior that i’m hoping for!
@cara: @WorstTwinEver15: good points, thanks!
@Railroad: point taken–i hope other people read this if they’re thinking about it!
@elisterine: @Miss Frozen Yogurt: @bananapants: kolos are pretty nice!
@Miss Britt: great idea!

I had never heard about this before, but I love that it gives you a kind of informal/descriptive photo memoir to go along with your formal photo album.
