I speak Italian and love pasta. My real passion is the outdoors, though. About Mrs. Cowboy Boot

I am interrupting my final wedding recap to talk about an issue that is really crucial when it comes to weddings: DOCs (day-of-coordinators). I, like many brides, thought I could go without. But as the weeks neared our wedding date and I started to visualize a timeline for the few days before the wedding, I couldn’t figure out when I would have time to set up all of the our DIY projects in our reception barn pre-wedding.

I had two trains of thought: 1) a stressed out bride, racing the clock, delegating projects, and ultimately, barely taking a breath before walking down the aisle, or 2) going hiking with friends, enjoying our rehearsal dinner, waking up rested the morning of the wedding, and possibly having a chance to go for a run or do yoga in the hours leading up to the ceremony.

Needless to say, option 2 seemed much more appealing. Our wedding salesperson at Devil’s Thumb Ranch had two recommendations for day-of-coordinators and one, she said, was fairly new to the business. Her name was Danielle Odil of Something Classic Events. We talked a few times for a few months before the wedding and, eventually, I caved. But not without combing through her set package and customizing it to my needs (including slicing the price tag to my budget). To see what I did to her package, head here.

On the day of, Danielle went above and beyond. The best example I can think of was her obliging to my last-minute request to get an off-road vehicle to take our photographer, Mr. CB, and me back on a trail to some old mining shacks. I’d seen them the day before and thought they’d make an awesome backdrop for images. Minutes later, Danielle showed up in a utility vehicle, rambling over log stumps and boulders to make sure we got what we needed.

While watching our wedding video recently, I watched as Danielle ran to make sure a door didn’t slam as my dad and I made our way down the aisle. Prior to this, though, she set up the barn to make sure our DIY projects and decor looked perfect. During our cocktail hour, she came to me when we ran out of appetizers to see if we wanted to order more.

The transitions from first dance to father-daughter dance to swapping pie all went smoothly because of her. She also plated my dinner (so I didn’t spill on my dress) and made sure I had a delicious beverage with my dinner.

She supplied the pens when we forgot our own for the guestbook. There were moments when I still felt like I needed to take care of things (like when the playlist was on its last song with time to spare), but every time I went up to Danielle to nudge her about something, it was already taken care of.

We only had her stay until 8 PM (once everyone had enough booze and food to feel like all was going smoothly regardless) but, in the end, I’m thrilled we had her at all. The level of stress that would have been there without her would have been through the roof. Thus, I urge all of you to book a DOC. It may sound frivolous, like a wedding-factory thing, or unnecessary, but it did not make our wedding feel like it came off of a conveyor belt at all.

The only thing it did was act as insurance to make sure that we had the best time we could.

Yes! I recommend one to all of my engaged friends. It may sound frivolous, but I think of it as paying someone to ensure that you, and all your family get to be “guests” at your wedding, not worrying and stressed!

I hired a full out planner. Her price was so great compared to everyone else in the DC area. I don’t even know where I’m going to be living as I plan our wedding (I sound homeless, I kind of am, but not how you’re thinking!) And after we had been engaged just a few weeks I was already having sleepless nights and driving myself crazy, so I knew I needed help. I’m so glad I have her, and yes, I feel like having her there as DOC is going to save me A LOT of stress! I think it’s DEF the way to go!!

Yup, I booked a DOC and I am so glad that I did! Our DOC will be great and keep my stress level down on the day of. If anyone needs a reasonable priced, awesome DOC in the Cleveland, Ohio area, lemme know!

Thankfully my ceremony/reception site comes with a day of coordinator. Otherwise I definitely would hire someone.

i’ve definitely considered it and part of me still wants one, but we’re going to brave it with just our venue coordinator. eek! i would definitely get one, though, if there were more space in the budget, because peace of mind is pretty nice.

Our venue comes with a long-term coordinator and a DOC. I’m so glad that we have both wonderful ladies to help us with all of the events.

i want to book one for those reasons, that way i can just sit back and enjoy the day. what’s the use of planning something wonderful for yourself and friends/family if you can’t enjoy it?

We just hired our day-of-coordinator, who does a weeklong package leading up to the wedding. I am thrilled to work with her!

I just can’t imagine doing all this work, and spending all this money on our wedding, and then not being able to fully enjoy it.

I have a DOC (thanks to a fabulous prize that I won at a wedding expo)! I am so glad to have them around…my mom jokes that is is a gift for her rather than for me (haha!)!

We have an on-site coordinator, who will perform many of our DOC responsibilities (we hope).

I didn’t have one. Even if I had I’m sure there would have still been problems. A DOC can’t stop people from making comments to you that will bother you. Plus they are just another person you’ll have to go to. Why not just go to the person you need directly instead of having a middle-man? I’m sure it would have been great to have one, but I couldn’t have afforded the extra expense, even for a newer cheaper DOC. Plus, I still would have worried the whole time that they wouldn’t have performed their job correctly either. All the DOCs I interviewed in my area didn’t know what they were doing anymore than I did. I seemed to know more about planning a wedding than any of them. So why hire them then?

I think your post just about sums up all the reasons I really want a DOC- so our friends, family, and gasp- so WE can really enjoy our day too!

We just hired one after we met her for the first time and were convinced that she knows what she’s doing. I felt like a huge weight was lifted from my shoulders since we have a tent wedding with lots of little details and vendors to deal with that day.

Sounds like your DOC kicked booty and took names! I LOVED our DOC and couldn’t be happier with our choice to hire one - I would tell any bride who asked (or didn’t) that a DOC is crucial!

I hired a full wedding coordinator and the price was so right. She already made her fee back through savings. Best thing I have ever done and she was mentioned on Wedding Bee for her DOC skills by previous bees.

After reading this post, we have just firmly decided to find a DOC. We’ve been pondering this notion for too long, but it’s now obvious we need help with the execution. This way we won’t have to rely on our friends, have more people in the way than we might need, and out of town relatives borrowing cars to transport wedding gear around. A DOC sounds less chaotic for sure. Thanks for the post.
