Mrs. Guinea Pig's Picture
Mrs. Guinea Pig, Baltimore, MD Age and Occupation: 26, PhD student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Operations Director at a non-profit Engagement Date: December 25, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: The Chesapeake Bay Beach Club About Me: I'm a tomboy science nerd whose girly side has made a startling appearance thanks to wedding planning! I love to bake, knit and sew but I also ride a motorcycle (that Mr. Guinea Pig wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole). We live with our three crazy cats and love to read, travel, watch movies, and do home improvement projects together! My parents/family are Canadian but I'm definitely American, although I've lived in 5 different countries, 6 different states, and speak Russian fluently. Mr. GP and I met online (did I mention I'm a scientist?) and had a whirlwind romance - now we can't wait to get married & celebrate with all our friends and family in a blue and yellow waterfront affair!
About Mrs. Guinea Pig

As I’ve mentioned before, Mr. Guinea Pig and I were with my parents over Christmas when he proposed. What I didn’t mention is that we were spending Christmas near Lake Tahoe! Mr. Guinea Pig had been hoping to propose at the beach on the lake, but the house is about a 10 minute drive up a mountain from the lake and he knew I would guess what was happening if he asked to take a stroll on the beach!

Anyway, the point of this post is that moments after we got engaged, my mom was saying, “Oh! Wouldn’t a destination wedding in Tahoe be fun?! It’s such a beautiful location!” We (ever-so-) briefly considered it, but Mr. Guinea Pig and I hadn’t really wanted a destination wedding. My parents are the only people we really know who live on the West Coast (and they actually live in the East Bay, not even Tahoe!), so everyone would need to fly in. Plus, as soon as I started thinking ’Tahoe destination wedding’, little dollar signs started flashing before my eyes and I slowly backed away from the day-dreaming (even if my parents are contributing the vast majority - thanks Mom & Dad Guinea Pig!).*

Being back in Tahoe for Thanksgiving, though, reminded me how beautiful a Tahoe wedding could have been. Miss Snow recently talked about her ’other wedding’, and it inspired me to map out my version of the Guinea Pig wedding that might have been, had Mama Guinea Pig gotten her way. :)

This is exactly what I picture. Tall redwoods, mountains in the background, near the lake, beautiful wood/rustic details, and long family-style tables. I want to steal this wedding.

style me pretty

Something about Tahoe says wood, hand-painted signs, and natural colors to me. I’d probably go for creams, sage green, and maybe a peach color? I’m not good at picking colors that aren’t blue. :) The jars of jam/preserves are perfect, and I definitely picture the reception with a pie bar, like Mrs. Cowboy Boot’s:

(CB’s pie bar)

Keeping with the simple/rustic wood idea, these would be fantastic centerpieces:

Of course, if you’re going to have beautiful views, you have to take advantage of them:

We could do our first look on the beach with the mountains in the background (sigh… so beautiful)!

Mr. Guinea Pig and I love climbing rocks while on hikes, so this photo would be awesome! And mad props to the bride who went hiking in her wedding dress. Speaking of wedding dresses, I’d totally want to wear this one (this whole wedding is assuming we hit the lottery and could actually afford things like this dress):

(Does this dress look familiar? It’s the Romona Keveza this bride wore!) source

I love the flowy natural feel to this simple yet perfectly detailed dress - a great complement to the beautiful outdoors, and it’s not too structured.

(maybe these adorable invites from Milkmaid Press)

I secretly wanted these invites for our wedding, but they didn’t quite fit (even my no-fail puppy dog eyes couldn’t convince Mr. Guinea Pig on these). How cute is the owl sitting on the foliage?! Plus, the name of this suite is Playful Nature - perfect!

So there you have it! It is completely different from the wedding we will actually be having, but that’s OK with me. I love the wedding we are planning (uh, obviously), but I know that there are lots of options out there that would have made me just as excited!

Do you sometimes daydream about your other wedding? Has that daydreaming led you to change your actual wedding or incorporate different details? Where would you have a wedding if it could be anywhere at all?

* That may be totally unjustified, I’ll be honest I didn’t look into it too much. The first few places that I researched gave me such sticker shock that I gave up. Of course, then we ended up going with a just-as-expensive place on the East Coast. Hmm… oh well. :)

I love rustic weddings ala Cherry Pie & Cowboy Boot, but it’s not as simple to go rustic in Chicago! I wanted simple no fuss and maybe a little red (my favorite color), so b & w it was (with splashes of red) which naturally lent itself to damask (I have 16 table runners for sale if anyone is interested!). I loved the simple, timeless, elegant, classic & vintage feel of our wedding & wouldn’t change a thing with the exception that the theme was not as well-suited for a late June wedding.

Ahhh that looks gorgeous! I love rustic weddings like that, but I just don’t think I could pull it off.

Love your other wedding! (Aren’t they fun? All the dreaming, none of the stress and budgeting!)

@amanda.lynn: I agree rustic weddings are gorgeous but I’m not sure I could have actually pulled one off!
@Miss Snow: And yes, planning ‘other weddings’ is totally fun! All of the big picture beauty with none of the details stress :)

Ahhh I love Lake Tahoe…and that would be such a gorgeous location for a wedding! I love dreaming up alternate weddings…if I could get married once a year that would be pretty awesome (minus the expense of it all haha)!

I loved all your inspiration pictures. I’m actually having a somewhat rustic outdoor wedding so i stole some of the pictures for my inspiration folder!

And my parents actually got married in Tahoe almost 30 years ago! But it wasn’t quite as destination for them since they lived in Cali and they (and all all their guests) were able to drive.

Oh yes, I definitely dream about the “could have been” wedding. I really wanted a barn wedding, but I wanted it to be in the city and that just wasn’t doable.

I love your “other wedding”, too. I also wonder about how different things could have been for us if we had decided to go in a different direction. I loved our wedding, but part of me wonders if it would have been cool to do a DW and get married on the beach somewhere! Maybe someday for a vow renewal, I guess. ;)

love that romona dress. i definitely envisioned other weddings–particularly having one in nyc, or one that was just 20 people.

Dang it I really need to go check out Tahoe! It looks so beautiful! I’ve lived in Nor Cal for almost 6 years and have still never been. The big fire 2 years ago ruined our camping plans at DL Bliss State Park though. :(

The most important thing is to have the day that will be special for you and Mr. GP for the rest of your lives. Through the years you can celebrate in different places and different ways, just adding depth to your relationship as you go along. Since you got engaged in Tahoe, it will already be a special place for you forever.

I think it’s common to fantasise about elaborate weddings in exotic locations, but when it comes down to it, people tend to be more practical. It’s fine to fantasise. The important thing is that you are marrying the person you love and are going to spend the rest of your life with.

I love your “other wedding.” I’m guilty of doing the same thing. I have a few other weddings planned in my brain. My main “other wedding” is an urban loft wedding.

Ah, your other wedding looks beautiful, but I’m even more looking forward to seeing the one you chose instead ;)
