Evolution of a Honeymoon

January 4th, 2010 @ 11:25 am by Mrs. Cheeseburger

Soon after getting engaged, I told Burger that the honeymoon would be totally his call.

You see, I’m a huge beach person - I could lay in the sun all day long with a drink in my hand and be perfectly content to call that my honeymoon. :) Burger however, being the Irishman that he is, turns into a lobster in the sun. Once, he was under an umbrella wearing a shirt and he still got burned from the sun’s reflection off of the sand!

So I wasn’t at all surprised when he started suggesting non-beach honeymoons. When he originally mentioned Disney, I was so excited! We are both huge Disney fans, and I haven’t been there in years, so it seemed perfect.

My only request was that we not go crazy and try to do everything that Disney has to offer. We have both been there a few times before, and it can be a truly exhausting vacation. I wanted our honeymoon to be fun but also relaxing and romantic, and he agreed.

Burger’s aunt is a travel agent, so as soon as the rooms were released for our dates, she got to work checking out the prices. Boy, were we shocked. We are getting married just before Easter, which, as we found out, is one of the busiest and most expensive times of the year to vacation in Orlando. For flight, accommodations, meal plan and park tickets, we were looking at over $6,000. Ouch. Granted, we had wanted to stay at one of the higher-end resorts (you only honeymoon once, right!?), but even when we dropped our hotel grade we were still amazed by the prices.

We went back and forth on Disney for a long time. For a place we’ve both been before and plan to go to in the future with our kids, we just couldn’t justify the cost. And at those prices, we realized that we could probably even swing a more elaborate vacation - like Europe!

We started looking into European locales that would work for a week-long trip. We looked into Greece, Spain, and Italy as options. There were definitely some beautiful places that we could get to for well under our Disney quotes, and we were totally stoked at the prospect of a European honeymoon.

But, life had other plans. :) As we were getting ready to put a deposit down on a trip to Capri, Italy, our (only) car’s head gasket decided to blow. Realizing that repair just wasn’t a financially feasible option, we purchased a new car and said goodbye to Capri.

We turned again to Burger’s aunt, with a much smaller budget and high hopes. When she started suggesting tropical all-inclusives, I was totally on board, but I worried about Burger. When he agreed that they were a fun, relaxing, budget-friendly option, we were good to go. We were deciding between Aruba, Bermuda, Jamaica, The Virgin Islands, and Mexico. After talking to friends and looking into our resort options, we ended up choosing to return to one of our favorite places - Riviera Maya, Mexico!

We’ve both been before, but it’s just too beautiful to pass up! Burger’s aunt found us a great deal at a brand new resort, The Dreams Riviera Cancun.

Located between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, it’s absolute perfection. I’ve stayed in downtown Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and further south in Tulum, and I’ve loved each stay for different reasons. I think that this location will be perfect as it’s outside of any of the major cities, but close enough to take a taxi if we want to!

We’ve both already seen the Mayan Ruins, and while they are beautiful, we are going to skip them on this trip.

We would like to head to Cozumel for a day, since neither of us have ever been, and we’ve heard it’s a total blast!

I’ve also been dying to do a ropes course, like this one (offered in Cozumel):

And we will absolutely be making an evening trip to my favorite place on earth:

(only the most fun you’ll ever have) :)

I know Miss Fro Yo is heading to Mexico as well - are any other ladies heading south of the border for their honeymoon?!

Yay!! It will be so fun! I can’t wait to go! It really was the best (expense-wise) option, so that’s why we chose it.

That looks incredible! Mr. Library and I are opting for a little Italian/Ireland time, but I am super jealous of the sandy shores and the clear water! Have a blast!

We went to the Riviera Maya on our honeymoon. We stayed at the gorgeous El Cid resort. We had a great time! I wish we could have stayed longer though.

We also wanted to do a “mini-moon” in Disneyland, but after seeing the hotel+tickets+calculating the cost of our food and activities within the park, we realized the cost of staying 3-4 days there would be about the same as spending a week elsewhere on a real honeymoon.

How much is your trip to Mexico & for how long? We’ve kind of looked into it, but we’re leaning more towards Hawaii for a number of reasons.

Uh oh, isn’t poor Mr. Burger going to get really sunburned now? Just make sure he wears lots of SPF 75 and sits under an umbrella at all times. My husband & I had to wear a ton of lotion, bought a beach umbrella, and still couldn’t sit out that much in Hawaii (the sun would go through the umbrella still). We came back from our honeymoon and people didn’t think we had even gone because we were not tan at all. It’s better than getting burned and getting skin cancer though.
How’s the snorkeling in Cancun? I recommend trying snorkeling if it is any good there. We had a blast doing that in Hawaii.
