Hair Through the Years

January 4th, 2010 @ 2:21 pm by Mrs. Buttons

My hairstyle has never been on the long side. As a baby, I was bald for quite some time, so my hair was naturally short for the first few years of my life.

Around kindergarten, I acquired the somewhat mushroom-like shaped hair cut.

Hair Through the Years : wedding hair N18200602 I did rebel for a short time during middle school. I mean, come on, all the girls had long hair! I felt the need to conform, can you blame me? Thus began the awkward stage of long hair, bangs, braces, and some pretty awful clothes. I prefer not to share photos of that time, just trust me that they are bad. Just think: Converse sneakers with tube socks jocked up to mid calf. Ugh.

When I started high school, I received the chop… to right about the shoulders. Which then evolved to a short cut by my chin/ears during high school/early college.

Hair Through the Years : wedding hair Jcss

During college, it fluctuated (I had a traumatic experience with a hairdresser who “slipped” when cutting my hair…and it was left at about 3 inches long total… even shorter than the picture above… the week before sorority recruitment. Ouch.). And, apparently I learned to like color during college, as my hair transformed into an auburn/red hue!

Hair Through the Years : wedding hair Carolin01

Hair Through the Years : wedding hair N182007 After college, I sported the inverted bob with bangs. And… I got sick of the red hair. In an attempt to return to my natural color, I dyed my hair what looked on the box to be dark brown, but turned out to be more black in reality.

This eventually washed out, and I was left with a side banged version of the inverted bob that I love.

Hair Through the Years : wedding hair N761600 … and then I got engaged. And I promptly decided that I am going to have to grow out my hair. Because, well… there is just not a ton of “hair”spiration, if you will, for short haired brides out there. Currently, my hair is about an inch or so past my shoulders.

A relatively current photo for reference’s sake (add an inch!).

Did you have any hair/fashion successes or failures as a kid? And, did you immediately start growing out your hair in preparation for your wedding?

haha, you were adorable as a wee little lass! I literally have this exact same post in my “drafts” of my blog but hadn’t posted it! Love all the hairstyles, and I think you should expose your awkward-teen-self (we all have them!!) :)

Childhood hair fail: curly mullet. Beat that, I dare you. It was a fail of epic proportions.

Immediately!! My hair was already long…several inches past my shoulders, but I have bangs and layers and for some reason I decided it needed to grow. What if I fall in love with a wedding day do that doesn’t have bangs?? It is silly I know, but I can always cut the bang back again :)

I love long hair, but for some reason in law school I chopped it off (as I do every five years or so). Whoops! I’m growing it out now for the wedding, but I probably would have done it anyway right now.

Your short(er) hair looks great on you! I can’t wait to see what you end up doing with it. :)

Out of rebellion of having such a long engagement, I cut it really short a couple months after we got engaged, then immediately panicked b/c it was so short and have been growing it out since. It’s now past my shoulders and almost long enough to do my dream do’. But I’m not taking any chances, scissors are staying far away from me until June!

your hair is consitently pretty! i had to also LOL at the “bald as a baby” comment…lol.

my hair was midlength at wedding time, as i have about the same length of your hair, and was able to do a little growing out, then a hairstyle i loved for the wedding…big barrel curls in the back, then pulled half back so it looked kinda up do-ish!

I sported the mushroom through most of my childhood, and then in middle school I got the brilliant idea to grow my hair as long as it would go. Before I came to my senses, it went all the way down to my mid-thigh. Ug ug ugly! I was horrified to grow my hair out after that, but I am now growing my hair out for the wedding. It’s taken some getting used to, but it will be great… hopefully.

@kateowatts: I’d consider it…although I think even my mother resisted taking photos of me for those years….I’d have to dig!

@Miss Rainbow: Curly mullet - hahahaha oh noooo :(

@may2011bride: So true…you can always cut at the last minute, but you can’t instantly grow your hair!

@Miss Spaniel: I’m dreaming of the moment when I am allowed to chop my hair off again…but I have grown accustomed to the longer hair…its going to be interesting to contemplate what to do after the wedding!

I had my hair trimmed immediately after our engagement in preparation for growing it out for the next 14 months! We’re now 3 and a half months out and its about 2 inches past my shoulders and I’m itching to cut it. Only a few more months, and it shouldn’t grow more than another 1-2 inches thankfully!

Ummm, I had waaaaaaaaay too short of bangs in middle school, glasses so big my cheeks could see through them, and braces. So, yeah…I feel your middle school pain.

I started growing out my hair before we were engaged (since my hair grows at a snail’s pace). It’s pretty long now, but I still have 6 months of growin’ time! :)

@moderndaisy: I wish I had done a last “chop” before starting to grow…but alas that didn’t happen!

@krissycake: Seriously, I was bald for like, 6 months or something crazy like that!

@Ms. Library: Mid thigh? That is super impressive…I can’t even imagine!

@Miss Pug: Awww shucks :)

Heeheehee, I had an asymmetrical haircut in 7th grade, long on the left side and then it wrapped around and got shorter and shorter, so it was above my ear on the right side! My friends STILL won’t let me live that one down…And yes, I’m growing my hair out for the wedding, it’s the longest it’s ever been!

@Miss Spaniel: Right before I started law school, I hacked my own hair off with a pair of household scissors. I guess I was feeling rebellious at the prospect of starting law schoo, haha.
@Miss Rainbow: I got a perm when I was ate and what resulted looked like a brown clown wig.

Ms. Buttons I think we are growing out the same inverted bob! Except I think that you are further along in the growing out process… I’ve been going back to my hair stylist periodically to keep my hair from looking awful but I’m beginning to wonder if things would move along more quickly if I totally stopped that…

I just don’t want to get sick of my hair!

I’ll be interested to see your hair trials….

aww, I love your choppy bob!
I wish more brides would embrace their short hair :/ but I’m glad you’re enjoying your growing-out experience. :)

I was addicted to manic panic hair dye throughout middle school. Purple, blue, black, you name it. Whew.

I am on team grow-out right now too. luckily I’m solidly in the pony tail stage, so I think I can make it!
