Mrs. Guinea Pig's Picture
Mrs. Guinea Pig, Baltimore, MD Age and Occupation: 26, PhD student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Operations Director at a non-profit Engagement Date: December 25, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: The Chesapeake Bay Beach Club About Me: I'm a tomboy science nerd whose girly side has made a startling appearance thanks to wedding planning! I love to bake, knit and sew but I also ride a motorcycle (that Mr. Guinea Pig wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole). We live with our three crazy cats and love to read, travel, watch movies, and do home improvement projects together! My parents/family are Canadian but I'm definitely American, although I've lived in 5 different countries, 6 different states, and speak Russian fluently. Mr. GP and I met online (did I mention I'm a scientist?) and had a whirlwind romance - now we can't wait to get married & celebrate with all our friends and family in a blue and yellow waterfront affair!
About Mrs. Guinea Pig

If we had moves like Lady Gaga, maybe I wouldn’t have to worry about our first dance? On second thought, I think that would probably be serious cause for concern.

A long time ago I found a song that would be perfect for our first dance, but it has sort of a quick beat, so I figured maybe we should take dance lessons. When I brought this up to Mr. Guinea Pig, he said, “Why would we need dance lessons, aren’t we just going to sway in place?” Uhhh… curses. Mr GP hates dancing, and I fully understood that, but somehow I never pictured standing in place swaying as my first dance. Otherwise it would be called your First Sway?! Plus, Mr. GP is not enthused by the song - he doesn’t dislike it, he just doesn’t looooove it.

And yet, I can’t let go of this song. I have listened to it probably 50 times (or more, who’s counting?), picturing us dancing to it. I have even been known to dance around lab late at night, sashaying to the song on repeat on my iPod. Yes, I just admitted that. The only song that remotely has any meaning to us is Oh! Darling, by the Beatles, but it’s not great first dance material. So there are no songs that jump out at us as perfect but I have been obsessing over this song for so long that I think Mr. GP will eventually cave (right Mr. GP, right?!). But we would have to find a compromise - it’s too fast for swaying but we’re not exactly graceful, so how would we pull this off?

So, what is this great fantabulous song?

More, (as sung) by Bobby Darin! I’m not really clear on if he wrote the song originally, but any covers I’ve heard always credit him, and it’s his version that I’m obsessed with. Check this song out and tell me it’s not the perfect sentiment for a first dance?!

{sigh}

In writing this post, I think I listened to the song another 5 times, and by the last one Mr. GP just looked at me with a “are you serious?” glint in his eye like if he heard this song one more time, all bets would be off. Nooo! Is it weird that I want this song so much but Mr. GP is ambivalent about it?

How did you decide on your first dance song? Did/will you sway, or dance?! Would you try to convince your fiance about a song, or give it up as not the right song and find another?

Awww, I just listened to it and it’s so perfect and fun! :)

We don’t really have a very good song for a 1st dance song, either…so we’ve been looking. It’s harder than I anticipated!

We had our first dance song (Into the Mystic) all figured out but HotTeacherintheCity was always pretty ambivalent about it. We randomly changed it to “The Man in Me” by Bob Dylan, aka the opening song from The Big Lebowski. Way original and very “us.” ;o)

I totally feel you on this. The song I love has a bit of an awkward pace too and I’m not sure what to do. It’s perfect for us, so I think we’ll go with it but it will probably end up being a first sway.

Mr. Library actually remembered the first song we danced to in high school, so it became our song. It’s “Amazed” by Lonestar, which is a little cliche, but the fact that he remembered it made it super special.

i think that’s a really cute song, and would be great for a first dance! chances are that if mr. gp is a strict swayer and isn’t into dancing, he may feel kinda ambivalent about any song that you choose (mr. pug is the same), so you just gotta steamroll him! jk. if he really is against this song, i’m sure there is another one, a little slower, that maybe he would be more comfortable with?

@Miss French Fries: Glad I’m not the only one who thinks it’s great! It’s definitely harder than I thought to pick music…
@hotchildinthecity: I’m concerned that if we don’t choose a song early enough, we’ll end up looking like deer caught in headlights if we don’t practice a few times before!
@mimi06d: We might end up doing a fast sway to this, every two beats :)
@Ms. Library: Aww! That’s so sweet :)
@Miss Pug: Hmm, that is an excellent point! Mr. GP is very particular about music, but he might not care about dancing music - I’ll tell him Pug told me I could use it :)

That was our first dance song!!! We used Frank Sinatra’s version, but still a great song! You can get away with swaying in place, but if you can get him to learn the foxtrot, it’s a ton of fun!

This is such a cute song! I love it. It would be so cool if you had a dance choreographed for it since it does have a fast pace!

I don’t know what you are doing with music before the ceremony, etc, but could you find another spot in your wedding day to play it if you can’t use it for the first dance? I’m imagining it being played as guests are seated, before the ceremony starts…or something like that!

i hope you can convince mr. guinea pig! I know what’s it’s like to come up against apathy or just plain conflict in wedding decisions like this!

It’s an Italian song, from the film Mondo Cane. It’s so big, it has its own wikipedia page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/More_%28Theme_from_Mondo_Cane%29

Mondo Cane is kind of…weird. From the imdb page: “a collection of mostly real archive footage displaying mankind at its most depraved and perverse, displaying bizarre rituals, cruel behavior, and animal violence.”

On the up side, the chance of anyone at your wedding actually knowing that is pretty slim.

I’ve always loved this song! I remember dancing at a wedding with my Daddy to this when I was little. It would be so lovely if you could use it!

I can’t listen to it at work, but I just wanted to put in my two cents. Pick a song that you BOTH want and it will be even more special after the wedding.

We don’t have a song either, so choosing the first dance song has been a challenge! I love More tho, it’s so pretty!

We’re gonna get lessons for our first dance…and luckily we both agreed pretty quickly on a song, so it was pretty easy!
