Log It Out

January 5th, 2010 @ 6:26 pm by Mrs. Trail Mix

I’ve found that a great way to keep me from jumping off the workout train is to record all my exercisin’ in my planner. I just have a little daily planner from Barnes and Noble to keep track of doctor’s appointments wedding reminders and stuff, but there’s usually room to make a note of the type of exercise I did (run, elliptical, strength train, swim, etc.) and for how long I did it for.

It looks like this one:

I find it very gratifying to flip through past months and see what I’ve done. Plus, as the miles increase, the satisfaction of writing it down in my planner gets greater and gives me the confidence to keep moving forward with training for the marathon.

I also like doing this because I can easily add up the number of miles or the number of minutes cross-training, which helps me track my progress. Cross-training, by the way, is usually considered any other type of cardiovascular activity that is not running (stationary bike, elliptical and swimming are the first three that come to mind). I like to do a decent amount of cross-training when I’m training for a marathon since it saves my knees a bit of pounding and it’s almost as effective as running; you just have to do the activity for a bit longer to achieve the same results (e.g. 45 minutes elliptical is like 30 minutes of running). The one exception to this rule I’ve found is in swimming, which can easily be more of a cardiovascular and strength training workout.

Writing down your workouts is a great habit to get into, even if you’re not training for a running race. It can also be a very positive and helpful weight-loss tool, I think.

Do you keep track of your workouts?

I just signed up for my first half marathon and have started tracking my cardio. In the past, I typically only kept track of sets/ reps/ lbs. during weight training. It is so motivating and makes looking at progress so easy!

I used to write it on a calendar, and then when I was training for a half marathon I started using a spreadsheet on my computer, and now for the new year I’ve switched to the Runners World online training log (it’s free). I love to keep track of my workouts, and I also use it to plan future workouts! Adding up all my 2009 mileage was fun, too.

Oh, heck yes! I have a (special) running log and I (try) to write in it after every time I run. If I don’t, then 4 days later I’m trying to remember what I ran the past several days. :D

I track the calories I burn… but maybe I need to start tracking what I actually do so that I’ll do more and not just try to hit a daily burn!

When training for a half marathon I used
http://www.running-log.com I love this site because it not only keeps track of your workouts, but it also graphs the mileage by month to really show progress (or lack there of). And to help figure out the distances of my runs I used http://www.gmap-pedometer.com.

I’ve never kept track of mine either, but it’s a great idea for some accountability!

I just started keeping track of mine as well… with a food journal along side it- Mr. E just showed me a site called mapmyrun.com as well that will map the mileage of your runs

I use nike+ to track my runs and because i use wii fit and active all the time, i can see what i’ve accomplished on them - it’s surprising how good of a workout you can get using the wii active program - although i have to say i hate lunges :)

Try http://www.thedailyplate.com

It rocks! You can log all of the food you eat, the exercise you do and it calculates fat, calories, etc. and shows you were you should be to lose ‘x’ per week!

I keep track of my workouts (and pretty much everything!) in my moleskines. I always have at least one or two going at a time. Yeah, I’m crazy.
