Mrs. Hamster's Picture
Mrs. Hamster, New York City Age and Occupation: 28, Finance Gal Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Finance Guy Engagement Date: March 9, 2009 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: The Pierre Hotel About Me: I'm an original Jersey girl living it up in the big NYC! I love baking for others, hosting brunches, and exploring NYC with my mans. Besides Mr. Hamster (of course), I'm attracted to shiny things, bold colors, snacks, matching and coordination, pork and duck fats, miniature versions of things, corny jokes and puns. We are planning a swanky Spring wedding in the heart of NYC, followed by a second reception in Singapore. From one city that never sleeps to another - I can't imagine a more exciting ride!
About Mrs. Hamster

I’m 28 years old, but when it comes to the gigglies, I revert 20 years. When I refer to my BM dresses, I can’t help but think of “bowel movement dresses”. I type out “save-the-date” because I am just *that* immature about “STD”. So when it came time to design our monogram, I was both relieved and slightly disappointed that our initials were relatively boring.

Here’s what I have to work with:

  1. My first name: S
  2. His first name: L
  3. His last name: K

One option would be the my first, his last, his first option, which would yield this:

SKL

However, I may be keeping my last name, so I wasn’t sure if this would work. Another option would be our first initials, separated by an “&.” That gives us:

Our Monogram: Not a Late Night TV Show : wedding stationery Monogra08 monogra08

However, when I look at that, I can’t help but think of SNL.

Our Monogram: Not a Late Night TV Show : wedding stationery Schwedd schwedd

Schwetty balls, anyone?

So then, I thought of a line divider, and came up with these using my ever trusty design tool… PowerPoint.

Our Monogram: Not a Late Night TV Show : wedding stationery Monogra09 monogra09

Our Monogram: Not a Late Night TV Show : wedding stationery Monogra010 monogra010

I liked the clean look of those, but I thought they might be a tad too modern looking for my yet-to-be created invitations. So I searched online for some free clip art, and came up with this, using my other trusty design tool… Microsoft Word*.

Our Monogram: Not a Late Night TV Show : wedding stationery Monogra011 monogra011

I thought that laurels represented marital victory, according to the ever trusty Wiki, but it turns out I misread, and it actually represents martial victory. Oops! Well, anyway, if it looks nice, I might keep it. Thoughts? Suggestions?

*I literally fiddled around with Word and PowerPoint to make these monograms, so I didn’t think a tutorial was necessary. However, if you’d like one, just let me know and I’ll whip one up!

Are you featuring a monogram in your wedding stationery?

Miss Hamster! I’ve been looking for a laurel wreath clipart everywhere - do you think you could share the one you used, please?

We don’t really have a monogram, but more of a logo! it will be on almost every paper product we create and I love it after a ton of trial and error ones!

SNL thats great!! Ours invites and programs *may* have a monogram - it is actually my little icon over there to the left <—— I drew it at work one day 2 A’s that are mirror image of eachother and a long S in the middle. you can browse the ones on idooriginals or something to get ideas.

We thought about doing the our last name initials (BD) with the vertical line through it. While I liked the design, everyone else informed me that it looked too much like an “I”, as if our initials were BID, which never occured to me. So we scrapped that and just went with capital B capital D, with nothing in the middle. I love your design, but just something to think about!

Your martial victory mistake just made my fiance and I crack up. :) I like the circle monogram with the line between the initials the best!

P.S. I’m the same way about “STDs.”

Haha, martial victory. I think you should keep the laurels for that reason alone!

I really like the circle with the line divider. The laurel version makes me think of a chaps or polo logo or something (I can’t think of the exact brand) but that may just be me. Either way, looks great!

We’re not doing a monogram bc the majority of options would be very close to PMS, which just would not do!

I also totally get the giggles with STDs and BMs. Some acronyms are just not okay!

Ah, PowerPoint and Microsoft Word! My creative tools of choice as well! It’s refreshing to see a Bee using these instead of Photoshop or Illustrator, which I would love but cannot afford.
I think your S|L monograms are the best bet (no ambiguous last initials, no misreadable ampersands). Good luck!

I really like the simple ones with just the S|L they look so clean and timeless.

I like the round rectangle one. The laurels remind me of the United Nations logo - maybe your wedding will bring world peace?

we have a monogram that i made in photoshop knowing nothing about the program - but because i know nothing about the program, i saved it and opened it in my trusty design tool - Microsoft Paint! - and finished it there. :)

Ha - wedding acronyms! Also this cracked me up but someone at work just walked by, saw my screen, and said “S&L!! What are you reading?! Oh wait… I’m thinking of S&M” I had to laugh because you thought your monogram was boring! I like the final options you came up with and think martial victory is awesome for a wedding monogram ;)

Schwetty Balls! Sigh…one of the best SNL moments ever…

I’m with you on spelling out “Save the Date” instead of STD…I am like a 10 year old…so immature!

I spell out save the date too! And one of my bridesmaids is a doctor and so she always comments about BM. Our initials are the same! Only, I’m K, he’s S and our last name is L. :)
