About Mrs. Hamster

A Surprise for Mr. Hamster

January 6th, 2010 @ 12:20 pm by Mrs. Hamster

As you may recall, the Mister thought it would be awesome to have panthers at our wedding. As memorable as that would be, I reluctantly had to veto that idea. But I would like to surprise him somehow, if the budget allows. I had two options in mind:

(Mr. Hamster - you know how you said you wouldn’t read the ’bee? Now would not be a good time to start.)

1. Durian Groom’s Cake

Hive, meet Durian

Revered by some, reviled by others, the durian is quite popular in Singapore, the Mister’s home country. It’s fragrance (or odor, depending on what you think of it!) is unmistakable - pungent and greatly reminiscent of spoiled leftovers. Durians are actually banned from Singapore subways, as evidenced by this picture I took while visiting last year:

I love how there’s no fine - it’s just “No durians…(or else)”

I tried durian, and while I wouldn’t call it my go-to fruit, it wasn’t too bad - like really stinky cheese, if you’re into that kinda thing. Mr. Hammy, on the other hand, *loves* durian. However, we recently played a game of wedding-chicken about having a durian wedding cake, and decided that having our guests leave the ballroom en masse due to the smell wasn’t ideal. So, I’m not really confident about this idea.

2. Cigar Roller

The other surprise I was considering was having a cigar roller come in mid-reception for some hand-rolled cigars for the menfolk (and the ladies, if they wish!).

The Mister doesn’t really smoke, but I think he would enjoy a cigar, and like the idea for the following reasons:

  1. The “cool/brag factor” with his friends
  2. Now that is a man’s wedding - no big butt bows here
  3. He can pretend he’s all Al Pacino-in-Scarface-like.

“Say hello to my little friend!”

Two of my concerns are:

  1. Out of consideration for guests who are sensitive to the smoke/smell, I wouldn’t want the cigars smoked in the ballroom. I’m guessing this issue could be solved with some clever signage.
  2. However, if guests follow aforementioned clever signage, would we lose a bunch of guests to the outside?

So. I’m still undecided, but I’m leaning towards the second option. But I pose this question to you hive:

Should I go with the cigar roller?

Cigar rolling is a cool idea–I’d want to participate!
I saw a tv show on the travel channel about Durian when I was getting a pedicure one time! That subway sign is hilarious.

lol. I love the idea of a durian groom’s cake. I’d bet you’d get some funny reactions from your guests!

How about a groom’s cake that’s SHAPED like a durian but is actually a regular cake - without that terrible smell?

Wow, the durian cake is a very interesting idea! They are tasty, but smelly! I took a college course about farming in developing countries, so we tried them then… the class after us refused to go into our classroom when it was their turn!

You could get your baker to make the grooms cake look like a durian, but just actually be a real cake. You’d at least get great pictures of his reaction!

my FI LOVEEES cigars, and would go nuts with that kind of surprise! If you think Mr. H would really enjoy it, go for it! Would your venue even allow smoking inside? That might fix that problem without you having to do much.

I have always thought a cool lounge with a cigar roller would be AMAZING!! And I can see the bragging right lasting forever.

The idea of rolling is awesome! The idea of smoking… eh, not so much. I happen to be one of those people who are sensitive to smoke, so it’s probably a biased opinion.

Cigars make EXCELLENT favors. Just make it plain that they are favors and will not be available to be picked up until people LEAVE.

Mr. KM has never smoked anything (nor have I) but I think it would be SO COOL!

durian gives me nightmares. we had it in malaysia and we didn’t mind the taste or smell the first time around, but every time we smelled it after, i would gag a bit. it was definitely a joke around our trip that the americans did not like the durian. my vote is cigars.

1. I’m not a fan of durian either. And the smell might really put some people off. But. If Mr Hammy would really like it. Go for it!

2. Cigars. Would your hotel allow the actual “smoking” of it? NYC has a strict no smoking policy indoors. Unless there’s a patio?

Last wedding I went to was at a swanky hotel and they had a guy rolling cigars out on the patio. It was a HIT even though it was cold outside, and my fiance couldn’t stop talking about it.

That said, I think a durian-shaped cake would be hilarious–and awesome.

We had cigars at our wedding (not a roller, which we wanted, but yeah … ). They were a HUGE hit and we got some uh-mazing photos with them. People did have to go outside to smoke them because of NYS law, but I don’t feel like we lost a chunk of our guest list because of it. They were gone for maybe 45 mins, and back for the rest of the reception.

I would highly recommend it, especially if the mister was expressed interest.

I was born in Singapore, and my family always considered it a major failure on my part that I can’t appreciate durian! That said, I’ve definitely seen durian-flavored cakes at bakeries in Hong Kong, and they’ve never been smelly. I love the above suggestions about a cake that looks like a durian, though — that’d be awesome.

How about Durian candy? I had some in the Phillipines and while it wasn’t to my taste, the smell didn’t permeate

I think the cigar roller is cool and you probably don’t have to worry about smoking in the ballroom. I’d be shocked if that’s even allowed these days. I’ve seen this at weddings and while people do go outside to smoke them you probably won’t lose that many people all at once and it won’t be so noticeable at a bigger wedding.

What if you had a cake made in the shape of durian? I still think that’s hilarious, without the whole gag-factor.

I’ve never heard of a Durian, but it looks interesting! Mr. FF would be all over the cigar roller, though. :)
