Our Baker Takes the Cake!

January 6th, 2010 @ 9:39 am by Mrs. Cheeseburger

Seriously though, she rocks. She does beautiful work, her cakes taste amazing, and she is reasonably priced - a true triple threat!

I first heard of her work through word of mouth, but when I noticed her listing and reviews on The Knot and Nittany Weddings, I knew we had to check her out.

We met with her in her home just outside of State College. As we walked in, the first thing we noticed were a bunch of gorgeous, full-sized display cakes throughout her home. She was wonderfully personable, her work spoke for itself, and her prices were right.

This cake is one of my favorites that she has done, and it can be found on The Knot. Look at that gorgeous piping!

We started talking inspiration, and I fell in love with one of the display cakes:

A buttercream beauty adorned with gumpaste flowers in gorgeous pastels. I was sold. I showed her my inspiration photos, along with one I had torn out of a bridal magazine:

Yep, it’s a Zippo lighter ad. I love the combination of the swirls and dots! And so, our cake design was planned: four round tiers of yellow cake with buttercream icing (what can I say, we’re traditionalists), piped swirls and dots with gumpaste flowers in our color scheme.

I’m stuck on how to use the colors, though. I was thinking ivory buttercream and swirls (like in the ad) with lavender dots, sage ribbon around the bases and varying purples/creams/sages for the flowers.

What do you think - how would you use our color palette to design our cake?

I love the look of the dots and the swirls…what a beautiful lighter ad! I love the sound of purple flowers on a cake…I dont think Ive seen that before and it would be beautiful. Either purple flowers or purple ribbon would really make it pop. Glad you had a great experience.

I love the plan. It sounds like it will look amazing, plus you can get all of your colors in there without making it look like a circus!

the cake’s going to be gorgeous. i think the idea you have is good–ivory piping with the colored details for accents.

Heather is wonderful! I spent an hour talking with her and her husband at a bridal expo last year. I always LOOOVED their booth! Cake tastes amazing and it was always hard to choose just one piece to try. The first year, I modeled a wedding gown for a local Bridal shop in SC and we had to stand there for 6 hours next to their booth and smell cake and icing ALLL DAY! We were not allowed to move (or very minimal!) and we definitely were not allowed to eat. :( The second we were done we ran over a bite. Couldn’t resist! Can’t wait to see the final result! I was blow away with my cake (done by another baker…our ceremony was an hour and a half outside of SC) and I have no doubt you will be too!

I love the swirls in that ad! I think it’s great inspiration. I think keeping the swirls the color of the overall icing, and the dots/ribbon a different color will add just the right amount of detail/contrast.

I think your idea is fantastic - to go with colored swirls might be too much - it’ll look great with them the same color as the base frosting! Also - isn’t it funny the places you find wedding inspiration?!?!

They are all so beautiful and i love your colors if it were me and i was using the square cake with sage ribbons as my inspiration I would a) Keep the cake your cream/ivory color and do the piping just a titch darker then the cake b) Layer a thin black ribbon center over a wide sage ribbon on all the tiers c) find flowers in your 2 shade of purple with green leaves
Side note i would make my cake circle i like circles and it would make my cake a little different than th original

I think your color use is perfect - I like the idea of keeping the swirls (which I love by the way) in ivory and the dots in purple with a sage green ribbon. You don’t want the dots to be such a small dab of green that they don’t look like they were meant to be green and then people wonder why the dots are off color or moldy, etc. :) I think purple will be a strong enough color to make an impression with the dots, and the sage green ribbon will be great!

Your cake will be so beautiful and yummy! Mmm. I agree with keeping the swirls in ivory so as not to overwhelm the design!
