When Mr Lightning and I thought about our first dance we hadn’t really gone beyond choosing a song. We wanted to take some lessons, and only when we actually started walking to the centre of the restaurant to open the dance floor did we realise that we hadn’t actually done anything about it. We sheepishly made our way to middle and as the first words of the Blower’s Daughter by Damien Rice began to play, we pretended there was no one else in the room and shuffled around in a series of silly circles.
Mr Lightning, bless his soul, is not very good leading and so I tried to do the job. Sadly he doesn’t take subtle cues to move here and there and so my feet and dress landed underneath his feet more than I would have liked. But we were married and the music was beautiful, so I laughed it off and made the most of the momentous occasion.

We had no official MC and no wedding coordinator, so it was only minutes before the first dance that I briefed the DJ that we were going to have the first dance and to ask for the bridal party to please join in during a certain part in the song. The latter part of the plan worked well, and to our relief they came onto the dance floor right on time and surrounded us in a protective circle.
