Mrs. Guinea Pig's Picture
Mrs. Guinea Pig, Baltimore, MD Age and Occupation: 26, PhD student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Operations Director at a non-profit Engagement Date: December 25, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: The Chesapeake Bay Beach Club About Me: I'm a tomboy science nerd whose girly side has made a startling appearance thanks to wedding planning! I love to bake, knit and sew but I also ride a motorcycle (that Mr. Guinea Pig wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole). We live with our three crazy cats and love to read, travel, watch movies, and do home improvement projects together! My parents/family are Canadian but I'm definitely American, although I've lived in 5 different countries, 6 different states, and speak Russian fluently. Mr. GP and I met online (did I mention I'm a scientist?) and had a whirlwind romance - now we can't wait to get married & celebrate with all our friends and family in a blue and yellow waterfront affair!
About Mrs. Guinea Pig

Why We Have a DJ

January 6th, 2010 @ 11:35 am by Mrs. Guinea Pig

The very first wedding-related project that made Mr. Guinea Pig’s eyes light up was music (the second being our website design). Mr. Guinea Pig loves music. He refuses to have single songs in his iTunes library, only complete albums - he says artists create albums so that they are listened to in their entirety, not piecemeal. This means he has a LOT of music on his computer, and he’s always exploring new bands/artists. Once, I thought I had finally heard of a band before he had, so I excitedly played a song I liked for him - he listened to about 30 seconds of it and said “Oh yeah, I forgot about these guys - did you know they’re comprised of members from {this other band} and they actually released this song a year ago?” … le sigh. Someday… someday, I will introduce a new band to him! It’s now one of my life goals.

So! Why am I telling you this seemingly random bit of information? Well, once we started talking about reception music and lamenting the fact that bands are so freaking expensive, Mr. Guinea Pig decided we would have an iPod reception, with all music chosen and organized by him (along with my input, of course). We operated under this assumption for about 5 months of our engagement and were slowly adding songs to the ’must have’ list - until in June, we went to a friend’s wedding. At the reception, there was a guy operating an iPod. It was unclear whether he was actually a DJ or just a friend of a friend, but this guy was. not. good.

When he announced the bridal party, each introduction was awkwardly paused as he clicked through the menus to the next song. He mumbled. When the bride and groom were announced and went to the dance floor for their first dance, they stood there in silence for about a minute as the DJ searched for their song (a minute is a long time when everyone is silent and all eyes are on you, I’m sure!).

(source - yes that is cross-stitching!)

But it wasn’t that the iPod had failed, it was the operation that wasn’t so hot. With every misstep that took place, Mr. Guinea Pig looked more and more concerned. As we left the wedding, he turned to me and said, “Please tell me there’s room in the budget for a DJ.” Thankfully there was, because I had never taken the DJ out of the budget in the first place, just in case. Don’t tell Mr. GP. :)

Now, we both realize that an iPod/computer playing at the reception is a perfectly feasible and totally reasonable thing to do. But we also realized that we didn’t have any friends/family who would be able to man the iPod, or any friends of a friend who were DJs. And we reaaaally didn’t want a repeat of the wedding we had just left (sorry friends!), so we decided we would find an awesome DJ.

Why We Have a DJ : wedding dj music Awesome awesome

(Not this kind of awesome, though - source)

And an awesome DJ we found!! A DJ who totally got us, knows his music, runs a very organized business, and was super nice! In fact, you already know our DJ: Evan from MyDeejay.com was also Mrs. D’orsay’s DJ! We met with three DJs, and Evan was the last - we knew right away at that meeting that Evan was the guy for us, and we haven’t looked back since. I’m actually pretty excited to have a great DJ play our wedding instead of a band: I’m one of those people who likes my favorite songs in their original form, and get annoyed if they’re played differently, so unless the band only played songs I didn’t know, I would have spent our whole reception annoyed!

The short playlist we organized pre-DJ will not go to waste, however - Evan will play (or NOT play - those do not play lists are just as important!) whatever we want, or we can just give him suggestions and he’ll run with it. I think Mr. Guinea Pig still thinks he’ll be figuring out most of the music for the reception, but I’m pretty sure we’ll get down to a time crunch, and end up just giving Evan suggestions along with several absolutely-must-play songs. :) Either way, our reception will be a rocking party and everybody better be dancin’! I’ll talk more about specific music in a later post (i.e. once we actually figure it out).

Are you going with a band or a DJ? Have you been to an iPod reception? How did it turn out?

It sounds like a decision that works well for both of you! We did an Ipod reception, and everything went smoothly, despite all the warnings I’d heard. Luckily, our venue coordinator took charge of it. Basically, we just had two playlists: dinner and dancing, so it wasn’t that difficult to figure out. At one point, I actually went over to the Ipod and skipped over all of the slow songs b/c no one was dancing to them!

Mr. E is the same way about music! I think going will a DJ will ease some of the awkward moments of having an ipod- and if it’s in your budget- why not? :)

we are definitely having a DJ! I just don’t want the worry of having to take care of an Ipod or any of the other issues (speaker set-up etc).We are aiming for stress free (or as little as possible) and with my personality I would be way to stressed if things were going wrong with the music! I need constant flow of music no awkward pauses or bad introductions.

Mr. Library and I went through the same process before we decided on a DJ. I was scared of having a bad MC and not having a ton of coordination within the music playing. DJ it is!

Hmmm…we were considering an iPod reception (well, actually an iTunes on the computer reception), but now I may reconsider. We’ll see…

@Mrs. Mouse: I’m glad to hear yours went off smoothly!
@Mrs. Espresso: I never took the DJ out of the budget because I figured that money would certainly be used for miscellaneous stuff down the road, but boy was I glad it was still there when we decided to go for a DJ!
@mander411: Speaker rental/set-up was another huge consideration for us, we’re also going for as stress-free as possible!
@UCLAMeghan: I’m not saying you shouldn’t do an ipod/itunes reception! Just that it wasn’t the best decision for us. Ask Mrs. Mouse about hers (see first comment) - it can be done well!
@Mrs. D’orsay: Oh good! We’re pretty sure we’re going to be happy with him too :) I was really glad to see you had such a great experience with him, though!

I’m totally the same way about getting annoyed if songs are changed from their original version! We’re doing a DJ for the same reasons (original songs, cost-effective).

I love the cross-stitch, btw!

We’re having an iPod reception. It sounds like what happened at the other wedding was just poor planning.

If there’d been a playlist set up exactly as it should’ve been, the iPod operator would’ve just had to click “next” on the iPod and it would’ve been seamless.

Mr. Guinea Pig sounds a lot like my boy. He’s totally set on an iPod reception, though this post has convinced me we need the full computer set-up, a pre-organized playlist, and an operator who knows what they’re doing. But, yeah, he’s been picking songs he wants at the wedding since long before we were actually engaged.

I went to an ipod reception. with nobody to check the pulse of the crowd, no body was dancing. I finally went up to the person overseeing the ipod and said, “We need to get something else that will make the crowd dance playing!” It was a little bit of a confrontation, since the groom had picked out the music all by himself and they did not want to mess with the grooms wishes. I told them that I was certain the groom would be much happier with people out on the dance floor. The music was finally switched and the reception got a lot better.

I think a DJ helps a lot to gage the crowd and keep the party lively. if you spend all that money on a reception, you surely want people dancing at it! Also, you really need a professional MC to guide you through the whole evening. The DJ/MC does a lot besides just spin music.

We debated having an ipod reception, since we’re inviting so few people, but the DJ won out in the end. We got him at a great price, and that way we’ll have no awkward silences or searching through music.

I have a tip for you if you’re trying to introduce Mr. GP to new music: read Pitchfork. If he doesn’t already :)

Just be sure your DJ is on board with actually using your must play/ do not play lists. We were very dissapointed with our DJ for this very reason. They had a web site where we uploaded all our music preferences but the DJ didn’t look at the list until the morning of the wedding and didn’t follow it much. We went with a big company and didn’t meet the specific DJ doing our event prior to the wedding. The music wasn’t a high priority for us, but we are now regreting not being more on top of things. I think if we had made more contact with the DJ ahead of time he may not have been so lazy about actually paying attention to our list.

Our band is actually like a DJ. We met them last summer at a dive bar. They accepted our requests even though it was definitely nothing they had ever played before. We got them to play Baby Got Back and it was the best version I’ve ever heard. I’m so excited to have them. They basically will let you give them a list of 10 or so songs that you want them to learn (if they don’t already know them). I’m not sure if we should have an Ipod for the intro songs and everything though. We don’t know our songs at this point so I guess I don’t have to make that decision until later.

sounds like this decision made a lot of sense for you guys, especially since mr. gp cares about music so much. while i would have like to get a dj just to make things go smoothly, for us it wasn’t worth the cost because we’re not having dancing and it will be mostly background music. ipod reception it is (crossing fingers and praying that we don’t have snafus).

We want an iPod DJ-someone to bring sound equipment, MC and switch playlists. It’s kind of the best of both worlds. I would need to rent the sound equipment anyway and for not much more, I have seen a few companies that offer MC and “make sure no one else touches this” services.

@Miss French Fries: I thought the cross-stitched one was too funny not to use here :)
@danadelphia: Yes, that wedding was most certainly poorly set up. But we wanted someone who could read the crowd and change the music, or announce the bridal party, etc. So a DJ made the most sense for us.
@missranuculus: Yup, one of my biggest fears of agreeing to an iPod reception was that we would have totally been wrong on song choices and there’d be no one there to change things!
@diorable: ooh, thanks for the tip!
@annabelle5: Thankfully our DJ is pretty open to whatever we’d like, so he’s willing to play from a pretty scripted list, but I don’t think it’ll come to that!
@fanatic888: Impressive band!
@Miss Pug: I think going with an iPod in your case totally makes sense, don’t worry!
@DollyLava: ha - I laughed at the ‘make sure no one else touches this’ service! That would definitely be a concern!

Part of me wants an ipod reception because I’m a complete control freak, but FI nixed that idea ’cause he knew it would be ultra stressful for everyone and probably wouldn’t turn out as cool as it was in my mind.

We’re starting the search for a dj this weekend and I’m totally stressed about it!
