Mrs. Spaniel's Picture
Mrs. Spaniel, Los Angeles Age and Occupation: 28, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Psychologist Wedding Date: March 2010 Venue: Calamigos Ranch About Me: I'm a third-year law student trying to balance graduating with starting my career, keeping up a relationship, and, oh yeah, planning an Old World, multi-cultural, "mountain lodge" wedding for 180 guests! A South Asian Jewish girl getting ready to marry my handsome Catholic Dane, I'm hoping to blend our cultures in our wedding just a bit more gently than by providing samosas as appetizers and offering æbleskiver for dessert. (Although that would also be awesome.)
About Mrs. Spaniel

But Baby, It’s Cold Outside

January 7th, 2010 @ 5:54 pm by Mrs. Spaniel

I’m a weather wimp. To be fair, it’s not really my fault! I grew up in Southern California, where we don’t really have weather—50° F is pretty much freezing in my book.

(A funny story: I visited a law school in NYC during the spring one year, and it was 60° out that day. People all over the campus were out in their shorts, t-shirts and flip-flops; I wore a turtleneck sweater, my big wool pea coat and Uggs. I don’t know what I would have done if I’d had to face actual winter weather when I was still cold in my warmest clothing! I guess that—and Mr. Spaniel!—is why I’m still in L.A.! ;) ).

Luckily—since our ceremony will be outdoors—March weather in Malibu should be fairly mild (unless it rains—a bridge we will cross in another post!). Here’s what I’m looking at:

Even though the weather should be mild, I am definitely looking at ways to keep warm for our evening ceremony.

Conveniently, my dress has a matching 3/4-length sleeve bolero, which is available for an additional $100.

Inconveniently, it’s the only bolero I ever met that I didn’t like the look of!

So as it turns out, finding a bolero that is not hundreds of dollars and one that actually provides warmth (rather than just modesty, which I’m not really that worried about) and that ALSO matches my dress is kind of impossible (unless one of you knows about something that I don’t? Hm?). So I’m looking into a pashmina or shawl instead.

I think this idea has more promise, but I haven’t found anything that has bowled me over yet.

What did/will you do to keep warm at your evening wedding? Or, were you lucky enough not to have to worry about it? :)

Ahhh, if only it were 50 degrees here now! (currently getting hit with 8-10 inches of snow.) Anyway. I like the look of the first bolero (sans bell sleeves), but I can see how it doesn’t add much warmth. I think the pashmina idea is great!

I welcome cool weather so I won’t have bridal shine, but I’m really worried about rain!

That shawl is gorgeous! I think that it would look so romantic draped over a wedding dress.

I like the idea of a pashmina or shawl. Luckily, it was really nice on my wedding day, so I didn’t need anything extra.

Order extra fabric of your dress from the bridal salon. Most dress makers allow you to purchase yards of the exact same fabric that is used in your dress. Then have someone make a bolero for you. This is what I did. The extra fabric cost me about $100 and then the bolero pattern was around $15. My grandma made the bolero for me for free, and she spent many many hours doing it. I bought her a gift to thank her. The bolero matched my dress perfectly and was the style that I wanted!

Our November wedding in VA also calls for some kind of extra coverage… I never even thought about a pashmina! That one looks beautiful!

Nice call, I’ve got a pale blue pashmina, which I might end up needing since it could be cold at night!

i’m worried about the same thing but might just go the bright pashmina route, like trail mix! Do it! you can wrap it fun ways when you got hot from dancing :)

half moon bay is march is pretty dicey, so for the pre-ceremony photos i’m going to wear a lavender pashmina that my mom gave me a while ago. the rest of the wedding will be indoors.

Ohh, I love the shawl! I really wanted to wear a bright colored pashmina with my dress, since we moved the date to October, but it’s still in the 80s in Florida during October! Boo

YAY I’m so glad I’m not alone on the shawl/pashmina train! Okay, that gives me more courage to do it. ;)

@Miss Pug: That’s kind of how ours is… just the pre-ceremony (and, well, the ceremony) is outdoors. I’d wear something I already own, but my only pashminas are black and brown… too dark!

Ah, I wish that was our average weather in Chicago in March! Um, don’t come visit anytime soon, I think our windchill here today was 3 degrees. Anywho, I agree with the bolero and vote for the pashmina!

miss spaniel, as a norcal girl myself, imagine my surprise when people would walk around in flip flops in michigan when it was 40 degrees out! compared to how the weather can get in the winter, it was practically hot when it finally hit 40!

it’s like 20 below out right now in MN and I feel like I’m in the middle of a tundra. We just got another 3 inches of snow and it’s blowing everywhere. So 50 would be a heat wave to us! :)

I like the boleros that are more like short cardis–and they come in fun bright colors! Unfortch I don’t have a link for you.

A pashmina or shawl would be really pretty. Maybe some white gloves? I know my hands always get icy first.

We’re getting married in July or August, so I don’t think I’m going to worry about it too much!

I like the pashmina/shawl route too! Although I also like the idea that amariem25 had to make one that matches your dress if you really like the bolero look?

I have the same concern, even though we’re in SoCal too. Our wedding is in April, but we keep hearing how it’s going to be a wet winter (finally) and colder than normal. Our venue has a contingency plan if it should rain, but I like the pashmina idea you have.
