Mrs. Nachos's Picture
Mrs. Nachos, Chicago/St. Thomas Age and Occupation: 33, Commercial Real Estate & Hairstylist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 36, Radio Producer Engagement Date: May 22, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2010 Venue: Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort, St. Thomas About Me: I'm a happy, laid back city girl that can find the silver lining in any situation. An optimist at heart, my motto is to turn your "what ifs?" into "so whats!". My fiance is a radio producer and the biggest Cubs fan you'll meet - our apartment decor definitely shows it. He and I grew up next door to each other and because of it, we have the best home videos and easiest holiday dinners. We are planning an intimate wedding in the Virgin Islands and a cocktail party in June for 150 of our closest friends.
About Mrs. Nachos

It’s coming time to start thinking about the invitations to our home party. I’d like to get them in the mail about a month before, but that’s right around when we’ll be coming home from St. Thomas. So, my options are:

  1. Send them out before we leave, which would put us at the 6 week mark. This leaves plenty of time for our guests to save the date, but we can’t use a picture from the wedding on them.
  2. Wait until we get home and hope 3 weeks gives our guests enough time to clear their schedules. This way, we could include a photo from the wedding, but we’d be printing them out right when we get home, plus I’m not sure if that’s too short of notice.
  3. Have my friend add a pic from the wedding and mail them while we’re gone. She’ll be home a week before us so she’ll have pics, and I can do all the prep work by addressing and stamping the envelopes. But then she’s left with the not-so-fun task of printing and stuffing. Plus, would a week really make that much difference?

I like option 1, but then we obviously can’t put a pic from the wedding on them, which I was kind of hoping to do. We could always use one of our engagement photos, though. Here’s a sneak peek of what I’m kind of hoping to do…

At $13 for 10 invitations and envelopes though, I’m starting to think about creating something on my own that would be similar and a lot cheaper. But I digress.

How early do you think our invites should go out for the party in June?

Can you send out informal email “save-the-dates” and then just do the invites when you get back?

I like Mouse’s idea - then you can still have your wedding pic featured on the invite, but your guests will still have adequate time to plan.

Mouse’s idea is good! I think you want to give your guests at least 4 weeks’ notice, so an STD will get you there if you want pictures on your invites. :)

Hmm…Mouse’s idea is fantastic! If you do send them out, I would say send them out at the end of March, right before the wedding- just over two months.

Ditto to Mouse’s idea. Or, you could just send the actual invite and use a picture from your wedding as your thank-you card after your at-home party.

Out of your options, I like #1 too - I don’t think 3 weeks is enough notice, unless all your guests are in town? Even then though… But I like the idea of emailing save the dates first!

3 weeks’ notice might be cutting it close. Usually summer weekends book up fast! I like the idea of Save the Dates!

If people have to travel, I would give them the 6 weeks. Plus it won’t be hanging over your head anymore. You could use engagement pictures and then find a different way to display wedding pictures at the party itself.

Or…I thought of Mrs. Mouse’s idea too! haha

You can DEFINITELY design these on your own and print them for much cheaper! I would lean more toward the 6 week mark with an engagement photo on them!

mouse’s idea vs. 6 weeks vs. your friend doing it - three weeks might not be enough time, and I’m sure you’ll want people to be able to join you!

It’s definitely better to make your own for a home party. People are always more bothered about the information so it won’t matter if they’re not all perfect. Also, ask yourself if you really need an invitation. You could either contact people by email or phone or cut down on the ink and paper by sending smaller invitations and putting the full details on a website.
