We Interrupt These Recaps

January 7th, 2010 @ 5:33 pm by Mrs. D'orsay

… to encourage you with what could be a New Year’s resolution! Do you remember this post? Probably not - but it made a huge difference in my life!

We Interrupt These Recaps : wedding fitness 12 1

This is what I looked like when I began training with Robert. In fact, that’s a week or two in, so imagine me larger than that. In fact, imagine me 20-30 pounds heavier like I was in England - but I’m not showing that picture.

Then, after two months of 3x weekly sweat sessions with Robert and my cousin Rachel, plus a pretty clean, mostly vegetarian diet (okay, I admit it, it wasn’t that clean—I stress ate way too often), and extra running/Jillian Michaels sessions I came to look like this:

We Interrupt These Recaps : wedding fitness 21 2

(Evan Bishop)

In case you’re a numbers person that looks a bit like this:

7/2/09 —> 8/27/09

  • 157 lbs —> 147 lbs
  • Chest 36″ —> Chest 35.5″
  • Upper Arm 13″ —> Upper Arm 12″ (an inch)
  • Stomach 36.25″ —> Stomach 30″ (minus 6.25 inches!)
  • Hips 42.39″ —> Hips 39″ (minus 3.39 inches)
  • Thigh 21.50″ —> Thigh 18.5″ (minus 3 inches)

Some of my caliper measurements

7/2/09 —> 8/3/09

(I was running a tight schedule the day before the wedding and ran out of time to do them on 8/27)

  • Upper Back 30mm —> Upper Back 25mm
  • Above the hip 26mm —> Above the hip 23mm
  • Bicep 16mm —> Bicep 13mm
  • Tricep 29mm —> Tricep 25mm

Finding a personal trainer was one of the best things I did for the wedding. In fact, I’d say it was the best. I had gained A LOT of weight in the past few years and didn’t really feel like myself. Working out with Robert and my cousin Rachel allowed me to win back my strength and that was such an amazing mental and physical gift that I can’t imagine not having on my wedding day. I literally cried on my last day because I was so thankful for the experience.

I’m sure I could have worked harder, and my result would have been even more impressive. But I did what I could at the time within the time frame, and I’m pleased enough with the result. I *may* have backslid a bit and gained a few newlywed/newly-tied-to-a-desk pounds but I’ll be starting with Robert once a week to keep me accountable to my personal goals. I’ll let you know how my war with the newlywed weight proceeds. ;)

So, if fitness is a New Year’s resolution for you, I can’t recommend finding a personal trainer fast enough. Find one you really enjoy spending time with, one that will make you laugh, but will also push you until you cry (sometimes).

Is improving your fitness a resolution of yours?

Great numbers. My stomach got down and now the inches have gone up, up and away!!! The personal trainer we both got for the 5 months before the wedding was the only way I got down to my wedding day size. I would not have done it without those sessions.

I think even 3 sessions the month before the wedding would help. If the local gym is too much money, check out the YMCA or craigslist for a personal trainer that is starting out.

If budget is an issue, I would cut out a candy buffet, an item or two from the welcome bag, or even cut two people you know you don’t want to invite anyway off the list just to afford a trainer!!

Way to go! You looked awesome in your dress!! I’ve got 5 months to go, so I’m now starting to really concentrate on eating better and working out regularly. I hope my results are as good as yours!

I’ve used trainers before, but for me I find that it’s more of a once-in-a-while if I hit a rut thing. I’m very active on my own, though. I’m lucky enough to have the time and unlucky enough to need it to stay sane. I’m very glad when I’ve worked with trainers in the past, though. A good portion of my exercise routine comes from things that I’ve picked up in training sessions.

As for fitness resolutions, I really really really want to be able to do a pull-up. I don’t quite get why I can’t, considering how good I am at other weight-bearing exercises. But I’m working on it! That and the push-ups where you clap between each one. I can sort of do one, but it’s not pretty. And running more intervals on the treadmill, in vain hopes of being less slow.

You look great!!! :) I’m trying to start making like Fergie and “workin on my fitness”, but it’s hard because it’s winter here and there are a lack of decent gyms around us. Good job!

wow - so impressed! we let our gym membership expire as it’s so bloody expensive and not sure what to do now. wish i could afford the gym and a personal trainer, i know it would help me get back to where i was when we got married 2+ years ago.

I used a trainer before the wedding (and I still have some sessions left), but I haven’t been to the gym since the wedding. Oops. I have been using a lot of ExerciseTV On Demand.

You look fab!

You’re awesome! (and look awesome!)

I, too, hired a trainer last beginning of March, and I’ve lost 45 lbs since August. (March-August was minimal weightloss, because we were fixing my was-going-to-have-to-have-back-surgery-but-now-i’m-healed back). Still with him, and I want 40 more gone gone!
