About Mrs. Pencils

A Splash of Nature

January 8th, 2010 @ 8:37 am by Mrs. Pencils

It didn’t take long for Mr. Pencils and me to decide on our color scheme. We knew we wanted an outdoor wedding—at least for the ceremony to be outside—and a color palette to reflect nature and the world around us. The mister put his foot down on fuchsia pink, which I love as an accent color, as in this inspiration board:

sigh… so pretty… source

Thus, it was not meant to be pink. Luckily, I had another idea. Our favorite colors.

Pencil-man and I want our wedding to be utterly and completely us, from our own ceremony created from scratch and officiated by his uncle to our obscure wedding dance song. So why not choose each of our favorite colors and run with it? And that we did. Mr. Pencils’ color is green, like grass, moss and leaves and mine is yellow, like the sun, daisies, and bumblebees. To emphasize the natural feel we wanted, we chose chocolate brown, like trees, seeds and rich soil.

I headed to Flickr’s color lab to find some inspiration from real photos. I chose a chocolate brown, some greens and yellows, and these popped up:

I love it! I tried putting in a brighter yellow, but it would only generate photos of sunflowers. While I love those gorgeous spots of bright sunshine, our wedding is in May and sunflowers aren’t even available yet.

I love the variations of a variety of greens and yellows and want to do the same thing at our wedding, with lots of different gradients of yellows and greens with the one constant remaining—the chocolate brown. My ladies’ dresses are a nice warm chocolate… but more to come on that soon!

Next, I headed to Snippet and Ink to check out some green inspiration boards. I was toying with which bright color to make the more mainstream and which to marginalize as the accent color. When I saw this board, I knew:

It had to be green! The yellow will remain in my girls’ flowers, our reception decor (more to come with that! let’s just say, I heart ribbon!) and hopefully my mother’s dress.

What color scheme did you decide on? Any suggestions for great ways to incorporate these three colors into the day?

A really cool way to explore some color is by playing with the ties for the men folk. Check out http://www.cyberoptix.com for some seriously awesome neck candy! We’re getting ties for all of the guys, but customizing them according to their personalities! I also love the different shades of green in the dress photo!

I love it! I think that it’ll be perfect for the look you’re going for. (Side note: I think Mr. FF deserves an award — or maybe a kiss — for putting up with the pink-ness of our wedding!)

So pretty! And I love that green will be more of the focus, while yellow will be for accents, great decision! Mr. Rainbow is definitely taking one for the team with our color palette!

These are my wedding colors!!! :-) Both of our favorite colors are yellow and green (we both have shoes that are yellow and green too) and we chose brown to accent as well. FI thought of lemons and limes as centerpieces and I am having my girls carry sunflower and black eyed susan bouqets (since im from MD) I LOVE these colors!!!

Oh I have SO many ideas for you - you could use lemons or limes as name place holders (I think martha stewart did it) You could use some moss or something like it to decorate. You could use apples, pears, green grapes, bananas, lemons, or any other fruits/veggies that are pretty!! My girls are going to wear chocolate brown dresses so that they can wear them again.

@Ms. Library:We are totally on the same page! I’m thinking yellow ties for the gents and Mr. Pencils rocking a green one…but I sort of love your idea of tailoring it to the individual! I’m going to check out that link right now! Thank you!
@Miss French Fries & @Miss Rainbow:Oh good! I love that some men will rock the pink! I think Mr. P may have if i had pushed it…but it didn’t really fit the scheme anyway. I can’t wait to see your weddings in action!
@clarebee: Hi wedding twin! MD? Green, yellow, brown? Yay! I love the idea of moss so much!! And I would love to have some random vegetation in our flowers..you have great ideas! I can’t wait to see if our colors play out similarly! (I am so jealous you get sunflowers!)@Ms Potato Chips: that typewriter is the one reason I adore this board. I so badly want to find it or just one in general and paint it just.like.that! sigh.
@Miss Pudding: Me too! All I can think of is the word “lush” to describe the feeling greens give me!

We are also doing green and chocolate brown. Our accent color is purple and oftentimes I keep forgetting to include it!

Mr. KM has said that he doesn’t care if we have an all pink wedding, but… I don’t know if I could do that to him. He doesn’t mind wearing pink and has a couple of pink shirts and ties, but man…

@Carbon Girl:I love the addition of purple to green and brown! That will look so great!
@KMSull: That’s how I felt too! I could have asked Mr. P or convinced him…but I wanted it to really reflect us and he’s just not a pink wedding kind of guy :)
@Golden139: Yay! twin! If you have any good suggestion for incorporation, let me know!
@asunw: Yay! I want brighter yellow too! I love bright mustard yellow- I really want to stay away from super pale yellows!

Mr. Rainbow’s only request was that he’s not wearing pink, LOL!

Love the color combos! Those wild flowers in the bottles are gorgeous!

Mr. Snow was open to hot pink (he even suggested it) but we ended up using tomato red and pale aqua…I cant really remember why though. Hah!

I am a green and yellow bright too! The girls are wearing kelly green dresses and we are incorporating the yellow by using lemons in the centerpieces and other decorations! We got engaged in Sorrento… home to limoncello… so we thought that was a nice way to pay tribute to it! Plus… I love lemons!

Love the hot pink :) Maybe you can add it in the BM bouquets, just for a nice splash of color! Plus, with those great shades of green, it will look awesome. Love your inspiration boards!
