Carnival!

January 8th, 2010 @ 11:30 am by Mrs. Nachos

Um, yeah, so I’m a little slow and just realized that our trip falls smack dab in the middle of Carnival!

I have never been, but it sounds amazing! It’s a holiday that spans over a month and includes parades, costumes, bands, vendors, dancing in the streets, and even the crowning of a Queen, King, Prince, and Princess.

I am a huge fan of the Chicago Street Festivals every summer, and Carnival seriously sounds like what we have here x 100.

The activities that will be happening while we’re there include:

  • Calypso Competitions – where more than 100 performers do their thing, and the winners are considered the “musical heroes” of Carnival.
  • The Pre-Teen Tramp and the Senior Citizens’ Quelbe Tramp – where the young and old dance down the street behind bands.
  • The Cultural Fair – where people set up lots of booths and sell food, drinks, candies, pastries, plants, produce, and arts and crafts. There is also live music.
  • Roas-a-Time or J’ouvert – which is described as one of the most popular events of Carnival. It starts early in the morning and is a huge party where thousands of people dance down the street behind bands playing while thousands more stand on the sides and enjoy…

And the day we are leaving is The Children’s Carnival Parade where children of all ages twirl, dance, and perform while wearing brightly colored costumes…

I’m very excited that we’ll be there during this time. It sounds like it’s going to be one huge celebration! My only concerns are travel and our marriage license. For travel, we need to get to the hotel from the airport, make a stop at the courthouse and the store, and make it back to the airport all while this is going on. As far as the marriage license is concerned, the courthouse is not open during certain holidays, Carnival being one of them. D’oh! Since we’ll be getting married the week before all of the above, I hope we’ll be OK. I’m making a phone call tomorrow to make sure! Could you imagine if we got there and couldn’t get our marriage license?!? Fingers crossed!

I’ll worry about all that tomorrow, but for now I leave you with a few more pics from Carnival…

Oh that looks SO FUN! Hopefully it’ll add to your experience rather than slow it all down too much! (Or keep you from a license!)

I have a former supervisor who always goes with a friend to St. Thomas for Carnival and she comes back with the most amazing photos- mainly of her in an blingin’ beautiful two piece like that of the first photo, walking and drinking during a parade! This will be fun to see in person!

Yes. Indeed. Carnival is fun. My lovely island homeland’s is actually during late July/early August. The traditional time to have carnival is to have it around the Lenten season (see Brazil carnival), but many of the Caribbean islands now have them at different times. It’s a lot of fun if you’ve never been. I’m sure you’ll have an appreciation for calypso when it’s done :)

Good luck! …but if the courthouse isn’t open when you’re there, then you can always just do a quick civil ceremony when you get home to tie up the legal side of things. Nobody has to know ;-)

I hate to be a party pooper, but with my experience in Mardi Gras (I live in New Orleans) AND having gone to St Thomas for our honeymoon, traffic is gonna be a nightmare.

The roads are tiny and while we were there we made the mistake of going into town when 2 cruise ships came into port, we were in traffic for 2 hours.

Oh and if you get carsick (like me) then be sure to rent your own car, the roads are tiny and REALLY curvy. Islanders are used to it and drive pretty fast, thank goodness we rented our own car.

It sounds like so much fun!!!

If the courthouse is closed… OMG that would suck. But you could always have a quick civil ceremony here and just not tell anyone that you didn’t make it legal there. ;)

That looks like a lot of fun! And Miss Spaniel has the right idea, you could just do that if you have to.

I’ll have to admit though, when I first saw the words “Pre-Teen Tramp” I had a flood of other images going through my mind! lol Glad you clarified….

I bet you can get some amazing pictures!!

Nachos…….Take it from me, you will have tons of fun!!!!!!!!!! I am originally from St. Thomas, and can tell you, your wedding will fall right in line with what carnival is about-a huge celebration. Don’t let the locals know (or do) that you are celebrating your wedding, because more than likely int he spirit of carnival, they will celebrate right along with you. I hope you enjoy the liveliness that only carnival can bring!

uh yeah, that sounds AMAZING. talk about a wedding bonus! My only question - did this make booking the trip more difficult or expensive?
