Let Me Entertain You

January 8th, 2010 @ 1:35 pm by Mrs. Pug

As I have mentioned, we are not having dancing at our wedding, so it is important to have activities at the wedding that will entertain the guests. For example, we are going to have a DIY faux-tobooth (with silly props) and wish cards that will be displayed on memo boards.

But we need something more. Like, a burlesque stripper a la Gypsy Rose Lee:

What a great musical ( “EV-erything’s coming up ROSEs and DAFFodils…”). I could create invitations with pictures of dollar bills that say “Bring your singles, ladies and fellas!” And for favors, give out those nifty pens that show a person stripping when you tip the pen over.

I hope this was obvious to every single one of you, but I was kidding.

In reality, I did consider some G-rated ideas from Martha Stewart Weddings:

Flag Timeline Board

Full directions and pdf template are here, but basically you print out a large board with different years on it, and guests get to take little flagged pins with their names on them and shove them into the board on the year that they met you. This was cute, but I would have to: (1) make flags for the pins; and (2) they kinda lost me at this step:

“1. Download the PDF onto a disk or thumb drive, and take it to a print or copy shop that can print on oversize paper. (You will need 17-by-46-inch paper in order to print out the full-size timeline.)”

Yeah, that sounds like too much effort for me. 17 x 46? Really?

I Spy

With I Spy, basically you lay out cards that have moments/scenes printed on them. Guests are supposed to capture with disposable cameras provided by you. Cute, but, I’m a scrooge and I don’t really want all those photos.

Next post, I’ll show you a “no DIY needed” activity that I think will entertain the guests.

Have any of you used these ideas or others for non-dancing entertainment of guests? What are you secrets to success? What’s your favorite song from Gypsy?

I’m going to have a very very small wedding with no dancing, and this is the thing that worries me the most. What will the guests do? I don’t want a boring wedding! Gaaahhh! I have no ideas as of yet.

You mean Mr. Pug was a no-go on the popping out of a faux wedding cake and burlesque-ing to “You Gotta Get a Gimmick”?

We’re having a band, but I’m not sure how much people will dance (I’m settling for “improved ambience” as the goal for the band so I won’t be disappointed if no one cuts a rug). Otherwise, I hope the booze helps keep people (civilly) entertained…lol.

@Miss Frozen Yogurt: don’t get too excited–you might hate it!
@luli29: i know, i worry a lot about this. there’s the fxbooth idea, but this issue continues to be a concern…
@Miss Snow: haha! yeah, the pasties just didn’t match our color theme. i think a band, with or without dancing, is awesome ambience.

Yes please! Let’s hear this idea! And I’m kind of with you… why would you want pictures of all of the same things from every camera?

Cute ideas! Although I have to say in regards to the year one–how are people supposed to remember what year they met you? That sounds really hard!

i love the year idea, however, i would never ever remember what year i met someone. i am sure most people have a better memory than me though!

@bohemianbailie: (if you are having dancing) i found that this age group was the biggest, most enthusiastic group of dancers! also, i bought a bunch of teen magazines and had them set up just in case they got a bit bored :)

Excited for a non-DIY entertainment idea (that I may or may not steal) :)
@Mrs. Mouse, Mrs. Sprinkle:I actually think it would be kind of fun to have guests stand around and chat, trying to remember what year they met you!

I’ve heard about having a caricature artist at the wedding, that would be interesting.

We’re not doing dancing, and in addition to a fxbooth and I Spy we’re going to have actual games like chess and backgammon set up in the room where we’ll be doing cake. We’re also going to have booklets of madlibs and trivia at the tables for people to use during dinner.

(And if all else fails I’ll just ply everyone with alcohol until they neither notice nor care that there isn’t a dance floor. Or pass out.)

@mimi06d: @Miss Guinea Pig: @Ms. Library: @Miss Pencils: @Miss French Fries: i think i inadvertently created too much anticipation for this non-diy thing. damn my big mouth.

That last one is a super cute idea! But I, too, do not want to deal with all the disposable cameras.

I’m with Fro Yo, no DIY-activities are right up my alley for our after party. Bring it on!
