Wedding Pearls

January 8th, 2010 @ 1:10 pm by Mrs. Guinea Pig

Just like I would have laughed in their face in disbelief had someone told me I would buy this dress, I also would have scoffed at pearls as a wedding day accessory - they are so not my style (you can start laughing now because I’m sure you see what’s coming).

Therefore allow me to introduce my jewelry - oh sorry, did I mention they’re pearls? :D

Wedding Pearls : wedding jewelry Img 82801 IMG_82801

(Earrings from Filene’s Basement!)

It started with these earrings.

I bought them for $15 from Filene’s Basement a long time ago - I love dangly earrings with beads (I wore a different but sort of similar pair in our engagement photos!), and I think something in the back of my mind was saying, “wedding day?” when I got them. However, that hasn’t stopped me from wearing them a bunch of times since then!

One day I wore them to dinner at Mr. Guinea Pig’s parents’ house, where his mom said, “Those are lovely earrings! Are you wearing them at the wedding?” I paused, and said, “Sure! That sounds good!” :) After all, I already know I like them, they weren’t that expensive but they look nice (I think), and the color of the pearls matches my dress! As soon as I said I’d wear these earrings, FMIL Guinea Pig got really excited and said she had 3 different necklaces with pearls, and I should borrow one as my ’Something Borrowed’ for the wedding!

That sounded great to me, so next time we were at their house, she brought out the options - one set had belonged to Mr. GP’s dad’s mom, one to Mr. GP’s mom’s mom, and the last necklace Mr. Guinea Pig himself had given to her years ago! Mr. GP’s mom and I immediately liked one over the others to go with the earrings:

(The necklace Mr. GP gave to his mom, with my earrings)

I love that it’s not a solid strand of pearls, and that it sort of matches the silver chain feel of the earrings between the pearls. Conveniently the color of the pearls matches pretty well, too! I honestly wasn’t even sure I would wear a necklace because I rarely wear jewelry, but this would be subtle enough, yet still add interest. I think the necklace falls at a place that would work well with the neckline of my dress, too.

(modeling the earrings and necklace with my hair kind of half back, which is one way I think I might wear it.)

I really have no clue about accessories, but my dress will have a sweetheart neckline (after some alterations) that will hopefully look something like this:

(close up of Nadine neckline, by Monique Lhuillier)

Would that necklace be a good length?? While I completely appreciate statement pieces of jewelry and admire people who can pull it off, since I never wear jewelry I think I would feel weird with more than this. When I bought my dress I thought I would wear sparkly jewelry to balance the lack of sparkles on the dress, but I really like the look of this more subdued combo.

And this concludes my wedding day jewelry! Pretty simple, right? Best of all, it was not that expensive and there is awesome thought/love/meaning behind the necklace! Sometimes I think it might be weird to wear earrings to my wedding that I’ve already worn out in the world - but I like them, so why not?! I would say I’m 90% sure this is what I’ll go with, unless something totally different and amazing pops up. For free. :) Because all money from the ’accessories’ budget has now been allocated elsewhere (hellooo envelope liners and nicer OOT bags)!

Are you wearing anything you’ve worn before at your wedding? What kind of jewelry are you going for? Was this a scrimp or splurge category for you?

OK so my FMIL gave me my pearl necklace too that Im going to wear!! I love that yours was the one Mr. GP gave to her! Such sweet love behind it. The earrings are beautiful and the necklace goes great with them. I love that you are going to make your dress a sweetheart. I cant wait to see the end result. I still have to find earrings. I would like to see a pic of your hair up too with the earrings and necklace…or maybe down but curled?

Can’t wait to see your altered neckline! It’s going to be so beautiful. And the length of the necklace is perfect not to district from the lace and neckline of your dress! LOVE IT!

that’s wonderful you were able to find your wedding jewelry among the items you and FMIL already have–and that’s so sweet you’re wearing something from his side of the family. i hear you on simple jewelry–so far, it’s only earrings for me.

::sigh:: GP, you and I are mind-twins. For serious. I’m also wearing pearls on w-day, and I never, ever would have thought that. I also rarely wear any jewelry (especially “statement pieces”) other than my e-ring. I also am borrowing my set (from my sister who is my MOH) and using it for my “something borrowed.” So, this is a long way of saying that 1) I love it and 2) you’re awesome. :)

I love this pairing! Elegant and classic. And I love that the necklace you’re wearing is one Mr. GP bought his mom, how sweet!

@D.Marie: Aww, thank you!! Too sweet :) I’m glad you like our posts so much! Also, FMIL’s necklaces for the win :) I have no idea how I want to wear my hair yet, but down and curled is definitely an option. I’m leaning away from all the way up because I never wear my hair up, so it would be weird to have all these photos of me looking completely different than I’m used to?
@Miss Pug: Ooh, have we seen your earrings? Studs or danglies?
@bblove04: I think I’m going to go for a pretty plain fingertip length veil with not too much bunching on the top of my head… but I haven’t settled on one/found the perfect one yet.
@Miss French Fries: Mind Twins!! Yesss!! I always wanted one of those! ;) Ok really I always wanted a twin, but this is close enough! Keep the awesomeness coming! And write a post on your jewelry :)
@Ms Potato Chips: thanks to your jewelry post I can hardly stand to read the title Wedding Pearls and not think dirty things! ha :)
@Mrs. French Bulldog: hooray for wearing ‘everyday’ items and making them even more special!

I think I always considered pearls but didn’t think I’d pull it off. Mr. P gifted me my jewelry and I bought him the watch for the big day…I love the necklace and earrings and how striking they are. I also rarely wear anything other than the e-ring and earrings, and I love that your simplicity shines through with these choices!

Love the combo. The earring/necklace combo is so elegant, and I think it’ll look amazing with your dress.

(I think I’m wearing pearls too.)

I’m so glad you posted about pearls as I have been on the hunt! A regular string of pearls just isn’t “me”. So it’s fun looking at all the other pearl varieties. Especially in silver! Thanks!

I love the jewelry it looks beatiful. My dress has some beading on it that would look very nicely with pearls. Do you know that pearls symbolize. Pearls are a symbol of feminine wisdom, purity and spiratual transformation. I just googled it.
