Groom’s Cake Break!

January 10th, 2010 @ 1:45 pm by Mrs. Pencils

My sweet tooth began to act up a few minutes ago, and to satiate my desire—while still being able to fit into my white dress—I took a mini-break from work to scout some groom’s cakes. I have always known we had to have a groom’s cake, partly because it is a Southern tradition, and with half of my family hailing from Louisiana, it is quite apropos. But also, I wanted one because you can get these cakes made into some really fantastic things these days!

When I was a wee lass, Mama Pencils told me a legend around groom’s cakes (I just had to believe her when Wikipedia confirmed this old wives’ tale). Young single women are supposed to sleep with a slice of the groom’s cake under their pillows and they will dream of the man they are going to marry. We want a groom’s cake to highlight one of Mr. Pencils’ favorite things and to get some chocolate cake on the table for chocolate lovers like me, not necessarily to help my single ladies get a glimpse of their future. How about a modern twist: maybe my single friends will bump into the man or woman of their dreams at the groom’s cake table!?!?!

While I am pretty sure I know exactly what the P-man will want, I did some searching anyway and found some really cool cakes! Don’t they look yummy…

I love this Snoopy cake! It would be so hard to cut into his poor little face!

The cake on the left is SO Maryland appropriate. I learned how to eat blue crabs and appreciate Old Bay Seasoning because of my soon-to-be-hubby, and it would make such a neat groom’s cake (yes, I said neat). These cakes are by Fancy Cakes by Leslie, which is based out of my DC/MD/VA region.

This one is so awesome for a rock climbing and outdoorsy duo! I love!

Mr. Pencils is a huge aficionado of dark, thick, almost chewy beer—especially Guinness! I heart this one.

Anyone out there marrying a lawyer? This groom’s cake is perfect!

Yes, this or something like it is exactly what my groom will end up choosing. He has loved Batman since he can remember, although I imagine a cake in the shape of the bat signal, but couldn’t find a picture.

Are you having a groom’s cake? Will you have it shaped in something significant for your future-hubs?

At the wedding we are having a traditional Swedish cake but I am thinking a grooms cake for the rehearsal dinner…..maybe a guitar or something Metallica because my SO is a diehard fan

I love the lawyer’s books! I’d love pics of our friends the morning after that whole sleeping-with-cake-under-pillow thing! LOL.

I think the cut out shape of the bat logo will be awesome! Our groom’s cake will be a cut out Puma logo for his last name. He is so giddy excited about it. He asked to have the icing look like the Italian flag on it too for his heritage.

I love the Guinness cake!! And I’m laughing at the idea of sleeping with a slice of cake under my pillow. That wouldn’t last long.

@bohemianbailie: a guitar will be awesome!! If I was a true musician, I’d know to ask which type of guitar (like Fender Strat or some other brand) but I’ll leave it at- great idea!
@ms. awesome: agreed! I think my friends would much rather eat it than sleep with it!
@soonerpsych: A Puma! How cool! My mister’s last name is akin to a swamp…so that wouldn’t look very good- but I love yours!
@Ms Potato Chips: precisely why I could never believe Mama Pencils when she told me this story. Who in their right mind would rather sleep with cake than eat it?!?! who needs a husband when you can have cake, eh? lol

That snoopy one is too cute! We’re probably going to have chocolate chip cookies instead of a groom’s cake, because he LOVES cookies! That way, we also have an alternative for guests who aren’t cake fans! :-)

I love the hard shell crab one! I’d love to do a groom’s cake but my FI doesn’t like cake, he likes pie!

These are some cute cakes. I think if we had had a groom’s cake, I think The Hubs would have wanted a replica of Michigan Stadium.

Mr. S picked our cake flavor, so I’m thinking he doesn’t need a second cake. ;)

We’re having a robot shaped groom’s cake, because Mr. Scissors is a roboticist. I wanted us to have a red velvet armadillo, but alas, it was not meant to be.

Or perhaps I’ll invent a bride’s cake… and then get my Steel Magnolias cake. Muahahaha.

That’s so funny. We were just at Fancy Cakes by Leslie this past Saturday to order our Groom’s cake. I gave FI his choice of shapes. We considered an antique car or one in the shape of our little Maltese dog. He chose the latter. We did see those legal books (FI is a patent attorney), but we’re still going with a Groom’s cake of our dog, who won’t be at our wedding, but we’ll finally get to bite her nose without her being hurt!

@Cole B: pie, pie, my oh my- i love the groom’s pie idea! do it!
@Mrs. Sprinkle: nice! it’s never too late- one year anni maybe? i always hear that the saved layer is nasty anyway :)
@KMSull: ah Mr. KM! get on the bandwagon! who doesn’t love another excuse for cake?!?!
@Jessie516: that’d have been awesome!
@Miss Spaniel: haha! that’s right!
@Miss Scissors: i swear to goodness, the armadillo is the main reason i want a groom’s cake. secretly, that red red velvet cake is what i imagine to be inside snoopy above…
@Brenda: jealous! i love the dog idea- a great way to incorporate her in!

Yes, we’re having a groom’s cake that my guy picked out all on his own. Not what I would have picked, but he’s been so laid back about all the choices I’ve made, I figured I could let him have one. :)

i love this!!! but for your northern guests why not have someone from louisiana bring a king cake and maybe box it for your guests or even let them cut and take a slice (and see who finds the baby?!) that would be awesome (okay maybe i want to do this because i live in louisiana and half of our guest list will be from here lol!)
