Lopsided and Unexpected

That pretty much describes our wedding party… and I love it!

Lopsided and Unexpected : wedding relationships Bridalp

As you all know, I have lived in three distinct places: Idaho, Washington, DC, and Baltimore. I also have best friends from every single place I have lived in. I say best friends, because I truly do view each and everyone of these women as the BEST women around and BEST friends.

And yet, you all also know that I am not good at making decisions. So, when it came time to choose a Maid of Honor, I balked. I flopped. I didn’t choose one.

Yep, I didn’t choose one. Instead, I chose a man of honor.

My brother! My tall, loud, teased-me-mercilessly-when-I-was-ten brother that I had played many a round  of Cowboy with, eaten dozens of hot dogs and gallons of Kool-Aid with, and have learned to appreciate more every single day. That brother. He is the epitome of a protective older brother and he is one of the funniest people I know. My bro of honor!

With that decision, it was easy for Mr. Pencils to make his choices, too. Originally, my brother was going to just a be a traditional groomsman, and one his good friends, a girl, was going to be a traditional bridesmaid. Now, he’s my man of honor and she will be a groomswoman. Mr. Pencils has also decided to have two Best Men—his little brother and his best friend who has lived across the street since they were born (basically, they’re brothers from another mother!). On top of all of that, I have a total of 6 people standing up on my side and Mr. P has 5. The lopsided number doesn’t bother us, though!

How did you choose your bridesmaids? Are you doing anything nontraditional?

I have 5 bridesmaids and one man of honor, and FI has 5 groomsmen (no women). It doesn’t bother me. Not sure how we’re going to end up taking the pictures and if we’ll try to line people up evenly or anything but whatever, it’s the people that matter, not the “look” :)

We’re lopsided too! I have 5 Bridesmaid plus a Jr Bridesmaid. He has 4 Groomsmen plus 2 ushers. Our criteria was pretty simple. Family first, then friends. My Sis-in-law is my MOH and his baby brother is his Best Man. I love that you have a Man of Honor :-) Still a MOH!

I love when you see couples that aren’t afraid to do things differently! I am sure you were truly happy with your choice and had a great time! Not lop-sided to me at all….looks perfect!

Yours in Perfect Planning,
Susan Southerland

I’m so glad you did this! I was recently in a wedding where the bride had a full lineup and the groom was recruiting the bridesmaid’s boyfriends and husbands to be his groomsmen! He barely knew them, it was awkward and strange, and to top it off, the groom even asked a family member from his EX’s (who he still spoke with) to be a part of his groomsmen! So bizarre, even with all that, the numbers still weren’t even! The groom ended up with his brother as the Best Man, his friend, the bride’s brother, a bridesmaid’s husband, his ex-wife’s family member… and he asked another one of the bride’s maids boyfriends, but he politely declined!

We had lopsided bridal parties (3 gals, 4 guys) and No maid of honor. It worked beautifully and everyone said it was the easiest and most fun wedding they’ve been to

This is my favorite, and I am so glad that it’s becoming accepted and popular. We’re each having a best man and a best lady (my best friend and her husband are on my side, and his best friends are partners).

My brothers were my bridesmen/men of honour, and my husband had his brother as his best man - that’s it. We were untraditional and lopsided, and it was great!

i love this–lets you know that what matters is the relationship/friendship, not necessarily making things even. i think that’s so sweet that your brother will be your man of honor!

I like this whole lopsided thing :D My brother is my man of honor too, and it’ll be 2 on my side, one on FI’s side. A small lop.

@Mrs. Mouse: me too! I prolly would have done it even if it was frowned upon…but it makes it easier that it’s becoming common!
@bluebook: agreed! I have no qualms about looking odd in number :) like you said- it’s about the people!
@Miss Pretzel: haha you’re right! I’ve been saying BOH- but I can totally use MOH!
@Susan Southerland: thanks! I am happy too :)
@gaga: wow! I don’t even know what to say- that’s just crazy!
@Dragonsus: that’s what I’m hoping our guests will say too!
@Gilneas: me too! I love you’re lineup too!
@Elisabeth: I’m glad I’m not alone with bros as MOHs! yay!

I love that you’re doing this! :) We have a lopsided bridal party (6 on my side, 9 on his side) and people look at me as if I have 2 heads when I tell them that it doesn’t bother me. Yay for doing what you want and what fits you best!

It’s so sweet that your brother is going to be your man of honor! We included all of our siblings and favorite friends in our wedding party, and it ended up being even on both sides!

I have 6 bridesmaids from all phases of my life and my fiance has 5 groomspeople, one being his sister :) So no one walks alone we’ll have a few of their significant others accompany them down the aisle.

We’ll probably be lopsided too, and I don’t think it’s a big deal at all! I LOVE that your bro is gonna be your man of honor - I think it’s a great idea!

Love the man of honor! :) And love that you are doing what is important and meaningful to you, even if it isn’t traditional. My fiance and I are each having 3 close friends for our bridesmaids/groomsmen. Neither of us are having a Maid of Honor/Best Man. He doesn’t have brothers and I don’t have sisters and neither of us felt right about picking a “favorite” among our close friends. :)

That’s great!! We’re lopsided too. I also really like that you have a guy on your side and your mr has a girl on his. Very cool.

Everytime I think about this I freak out a little bit! My “big brother” who is not related to me in any way - would be one of my first choices … but our families are a bit traditional and would frown on it … i’m hoping he’ll be our officiant!!

@Miss French Fries: lol me too! every vendor meeting I have learned to preface it with “we’re doing things bit differently” but it seems silly that people even care!
@Miss Parfait: it’s awesome when it works out like that! yay!
@HeatherMH: that’s a really great idea! hmm…..
@amanda.lynn: me too! I love you’ll be doing the same!
@RunMegRun:exactly!I have no favorite best friend- I love them all :)
@Miss Frozen Yogurt: it is funny how it worked out that way! :)
@alishaneva: i’m sad your fam wouldn’t like it…but I love the idea of him as an officiant!
