Merry 'Maids : wedding bridesmaid dress 13 1

It’s that time. I need to officially pick out bridesmaids dresses. I’ve been dragging this out because, to be honest, I feel like a bridezilla jerk telling my friends what to wear. I feel like it’s a big enough task to listen to me yammer, much less spend $XXX.XX on a dress and shoes for my wedding. My neuroses aside, I really, really love light gray bridesmaids’ dresses. I initially wanted black for the dresses, but the gray just seems so chic and more appropriate for a summer wedding. I still might do black dresses, but that’s another post!

I know for bridesmaids’ dresses I want to choose one designer, one color, and preferably one fabric and just let ’em go hog-wild. (OK, I guess it’s not totally hog-wild since there are parameters.) All four of the ’maids could have different dresses, but there’d still be a common thread.

I love these J.Crew dresses in light pewter. The dresses on the top row are cotton cady, and the dresses on the second row are silk taffeta. I slightly prefer the taffeta dresses because it is a more formal fabric than the cotton cady.

Since we’re having this big ol’ technicolor-ed wedding, I love the look of bright shoes in assorted colors for the ’maids. These shoes are by Nina in the “Design Your Own” section. I think that having a set of blue shoes, green shoes, yeller shoes, and pink shoes would look great. As we get closer to spring, there also will be more possibilities out for super bright and colorful heels.

Did you guys feel strange telling your bridesmaids what to wear? How did you straddle the divide between letting them choose their own dresses and having them wear what you wanted?

Also, light gray dresses with bright shoes—good idea or bad idea?

I love those dresses! I agree with you- it feels strange telling my friends what to wear. But I got a lot of feedback from them, and I also gave them a choice of four dresses (same fabric and color, but different cuts).

And the shoes are adorable! I think they’ll look great.

I love the light gray-bright color combination — I think it’s fashion forward and appropriate for just about any season. My bridesmaids will be wearing a light gray dress and magenta/raspberry accents (shoes, hair accessories, etc.) of their choice.

Those are some great options for your girls! I like it when shoes don’t match the dresses. With gray, the color pop of the shoes would really create a neat look.

I think i felt more stress in the wedding i was in where i could wear what i wanted. For my wedding my friends were stress-free because i picked everything out and they just had to get sized at the tailor.
LOVE the idea of all of them wearing a different colored shoe, that will look awsome in pics!!

I finally decided on my bridesmaid dresses yesterday, too! I had initially wanted them to wear grey, but then I realized it wouldn’t work with the skin tone of two of my bridesmaids. But if you can be sure the color works, I love the idea of the different bright shoes! And I think your instincts on the taffeta are right, too :)

I want to do the same thing with my girls, but I only have two and am afraid it might look funny.
PS I think if you go with the silk taffeta you’re gonna end up with four girls in the same dress cause the second from the right is soooooo cute! :)
Oh, and I love the idea of matching-ish dresses and non matching shoes.

I love the combo…those dresses and shoes are fantastic! My bridesmaids are wearing short black dresses of their own choosing, and bright pink shoes. And yes, I felt so strange telling them what to wear! I felt like they were props in my wedding performance, or something!

I totally know what you are talking about! I feel like bridezilla telling them what to wear, so I have been pretty flexible about it. They ended up dressing themselves in the same dress anyway! I love the idea of gray dresses with bright shoes! It will look killer!

i adore this idea! love the dresses and the hot color shoes are perfect. i too hated asking my BMs to buy their dresses and shoes and did what i could to make it less costly and easy for them. but they are doing it because they love you, and know that you would do the same for them… so dont worry!

A little hint to maybe warn you off the cotton cady dresses…I was told by the bridal girl at J.Crew that sweat marks are VERY obvious with that material. And you’re getting married in Georgia. In June. Something to think about, maybe.

It is a tough situation indeed! Since we are trying to edge away from a lot of formality, I just let the girlies choose any knee to tea length dress, and gave them paint chips to work with a range of colors.

love the dresses, love the shoes - I’m going to steal one of the dresses in the top row, they’re so pretty!

My maids wanted me to decide, we picked a bunch of dresses and they didn’t want to decide - and I didn’t want to decide - so then we all just decided together :)

I like the bright shoes! I think it will go great with the light dresses. And the shoes with the side-bow and ankle strap are soo cute!

I love the pewter dress + bright shoes combo. I think honestly most bridesmaids prefer to be told what to wear, because at least then they don’t have to worry that you’re not going to be happy with what they chose. Good luck!

GREAT IDEA! Seriously, I love it. It screams classy AND fun at the same time!

And I chose JCrew as well - they are fabulous to work with in the special occasions department - you will not be disappointed. :)

Aaaand…I’ve been eying myself some of those blue Nina shoes for a while.
