Mrs. Nachos's Picture
Mrs. Nachos, Chicago/St. Thomas Age and Occupation: 33, Commercial Real Estate & Hairstylist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 36, Radio Producer Engagement Date: May 22, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2010 Venue: Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort, St. Thomas About Me: I'm a happy, laid back city girl that can find the silver lining in any situation. An optimist at heart, my motto is to turn your "what ifs?" into "so whats!". My fiance is a radio producer and the biggest Cubs fan you'll meet - our apartment decor definitely shows it. He and I grew up next door to each other and because of it, we have the best home videos and easiest holiday dinners. We are planning an intimate wedding in the Virgin Islands and a cocktail party in June for 150 of our closest friends.
About Mrs. Nachos

If you all remember, I was determined to keep my skin looking as good as it could this winter since I normally bundle up and forget about it. This time around, I have to bare it in April, so as a refresher, here was my 7-step plan with my grade on how well it’s been working/how well I’ve been sticking to it:

  1. Lukewarm showers = A
  2. Neutrogena Body Clear Body Wash w/ Scrubby Gloves = A++++++
  3. Clean and Clear Continuous Control Face Wash = C
  4. Clean and Clear Acne Spot Treatment = B
  5. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize = A++++++
  6. Tanning = B
  7. Drink lots of water = B

And here’s a breakdown of how well I’ve done sticking to this and more importantly, how well it’s working.

1. I’ve actually been better than I thought I’d be about the lukewarm showers. I’m COLD in the process but I’m doing it! I still am probably taking showers hotter than need be, but I promise, they haven’t been the scorchers I’m used to. I really honestly believe it’s making a difference because I don’t feel like I’m gonna crack like this guy if I bend my arms or smile after I towel off…

2. The Neutrogena Body Wash is making a HUGE improvement with the little bumpies, particularly on my upper back and chest where it was the worst. I’m super happy about this since my dress is strapless and my back and chest will be out there on display! I highly recommend using this, especially with the gloves to exfoliate, but don’t forget to moisturize after.

3. I’ve been using Clean and Clear Continuous Control for years and I have to say, it’s been failing me lately. I’ve been getting little bumpies on the apples of my cheeks which is a new surprise – I’ve never had that before. So I bit the bullet and ordered Proactive, which just came in the mail today. The day I ordered it, I posted a poll on the boards to see if you all thought it was worth the money, and I got a resounding 2 -to-1 NO. It was already ordered at that point though, so I will still see if it works for me. Hey, I’m a sucker for infomercials, and if she says it works…

… well then it must, right?

4. The Clean and Clear spot treatment has definitely helped with the little bumpies that have popped up a few times. I highly recommend this stuff for those fun surprise zittles.

5. Moisturizing has made the biggest difference out of everything. The second I get out of the shower, I’ve been generously slathering the stuff on. I have to tell you, I have not had one eczema spot pop up anywhere on my body except on the palm of my hand, which is normal since I wash my hands 20 bazillion times a day. I can not believe that at this point I am eczema-free from inexpensive Dove lotion. The key is to be religious about it.

6. I’m still going tanning but I actually haven’t been going very regularly, mostly because I’m lazy and just want to go home after work most days. I’d say I’ve been going, on average, about once every 2 weeks. I still notice a big difference in my skin clearing for a few days after going, and I’m getting a little color which I’m happy about. I’ll probably bump up the frequency once we get a little closer to the wedding.

7. I’ve always been a water drinker and always have a bottle by my side, but I haven’t necessarily upped my consumption. I do think that the 4-5 bottles that I drink a day are good for me, and if I don’t drink my usual amount, I definitely notice a difference in my face, especially under my eyes regarding wrinkles and sunken-in-ness (yes, I made up my own word).

So I’d say all-in-all, my skin is looking SO much better now than it did this time last year, and I plan to stick this out for as long as possible.

I’ve gone from this…

After reading your post a while back, I’ve actually been trying a lot of your ideas. I never knew that hot showers were a culprit in dry skin! I’m trying really hard to turn the hot water down when I’m showering, but it’s hard!! I think I’ll also try those exfoliating gloves you mentioned, because I have the same problem with my back and shoulders.

I’m so glad your trial has been so successful! I hope the Proactiv works for you. I swear by it!

I like ProActive, I thought it worked wonders for me. A little expensive then most products, but worth it, especially for your wedding.

I must say that dryness is not usually a problem for us in Florida but with the weather that we have been having I just might have to take some of your advice! Glad that it is all working so well for you….I am sure you will look fantastic on your wedding day!

Yours in Perfect Planning,
Susan Southerland

Proactiv was awesome for me! To cut down on costs, I’ve been focusing on a regimen with the same active ingredients, but I’ve been considering going back to it!

I swear by proactive. Really Really Really made a difference with that lovely “I get breakouts after 30″ skin :-) They also have body pads which freakin’ rock. I hope it works for you! On a side note I did try their makeup and instantly went pack to MAC Studio Fix.

I have been following some of your beauty regimen suggestions since your first post and have to agree they have been working well. Especially the Neutrogena Body Scrub and the religious application of moisturizer.

In regards to Proactiv, I used it for about four years and it worked well. About a year ago it suddenly stopped being effective. I tried a few prescription options (pills, wipes, washes, lotions, etc) before being prescriped Clarifoam, which I swear by. It is easy, quick, and does not have benzyl peroxide …so no bleaching out of your clothes, towels, or bedding. Can not say enough good things about this stuff!

Good point about drinking lots of water- what you eat and drink has an enormous impact on how your skin looks.

Yay for the Clean and Clear Acne Spot Treatment!!! It works SO much faster than other products I’ve tried.

For years, my winter skin fix has been St.Ives Apricot Scrub- LOVE IT!

(p.s.- I’ve seen that statue in the first photo of the post- it’s ENORMOUS in person, haha!)

Kudos to you for sticking with your plan! I know what you mean about resisting taking super hot showers — it’s tempting when it’s 10 degrees outside!

proactiv killed my skin - it made my acne worse I swear! I use that same body wash and love it too - smells so good! I do need to start drinking more water - one bottle a day would be A LOT for me.

I just started using the clarisonic skin brush last night and my face was so smooth after, even with one use. It is costly but my sister gave me hers to use (you buy replacement brush heads to use). I’ve wanted it for years!

I am so happy it is working! I love proactiv- I hope it works for you. It is expensive though- you can adjust the frequency they send it and I find that about 1/6 weeks works for me. Yay nachos beautiful skin bride!

These posts are my favorite! I work so darn hard every winter to keep my skin from looking gross and usually I let it all fall by the way side mid-December and get flaky, cracked, gross.

These opened my eyes to why my skin was so much nicer when I used to tan (though I’ve started going again I’m going less frequently than when I was 18) and what might be making my eczema flare up!

Thanks again! Yay for having great skin for your wedding day!

I love all your photos!! They’re great. My skin is getting really dry lately and I’m not sure what the deal is. Maybe it’s because Texas hit the teens the other day. My skin was in shock!

isn’t it amazing how a simple change like drinking more water helps so much?

I love Proactiv! I have been using the 3 steps only in the mornings (use cleanser in the shower) and that has kept my face almost completely clear while also saving my towels and pillowcases from bleach spots.

At night I use cetaphil cleaner and the cetaphil moisturizing cream that comes in the tub and that has been working wonders to keep my face, neck, and hands moisturized all winter.

I have been using vaseline intensive care soap with my scrubby gloves, and moisturize with Aveeno lotion. I’ve been doing this for years now, and I’m sticking to it. My face, on the on the other hand, has betrayed me. I have always been the girl with pretty skin, but since wedding planning has consumed my life, stress acne has begun. I have always used St. Ives apricot scrub, and had great results, but not recently. I tried proactiv, but it made the acne worse. Finally, I decided to try natural products, since they are gentler than most of the facial products on the market. I love Origins skin care line. I went in on e of the stores on a whim one day, and came out with a shopping bag full of things for my face. The consultant “examined” my problem area, and recommended three things for me to use. The charcoal mask is great; it shrinks pores and zaps potential breakouts. I apply this as needed. They also have a daily use checks and balances cleansing system that tries to find a happy medium between regular and dry skin. Also, the gentle exfoliating scrub is wonderful. I use it two times a week, and it really has made a difference.
